A post from Kotaku:
read this over at ps3 hacks from a user named "Mihai Olimpiu Cristian", sounds fairly reasonable:
"
Might be old news, but thanks to a certain hardware/software guru, and from various of sources and efnet they are able to at least give the letdown why this problem is happening. Quoted.
Well the gist is that the ARM SYSCON CPU that is used to power up the front panel of the ps3, that is responsible for doing things like sleep mode, eject, RTC etc. Is an old batch that sony picked up from the shelf like other manufacturers that has that calendar year bug regarding feburary 29th on certain periods. Causing the ps3 system clock and the real time clock to desync, messing up security measures like Digital Rights management software and sometimes games that relies on clocks for whatever reason. As well as signing up to the playstation network… This CPU is always on even when your PS3 isn’t plugged
This is the one of the same type of CPUs that is powering up mobile devices like zune and blackberries, they have been affected with this bug, so they done some software patches. A syscon update can also fix this problem
The Slims ps3s aren’t affected because they use a newer up to date revision on the syscon cpu that fixes this bug.
A quick way to fix this is to remove the RTC battery for at least 5-10 min and plug it back in, you will see the date and time reset, and voila…
BTW all this was quoted from some ps3 hardware gurus and tested by various of peeps on efnet, all thanks to them for the information!"
I think I'll wait for sony to sort it out, it'd be nice to get some free psn games for this or something.
WTF is the RTC battery?Comment

RTC battery is the same thing as a CMOS on a PC. (RTC = Real Time Clock)
lil battery that looks like a quarter and is used for keeping time/date etc.
i'd imagine you'd have to crack that fucker open to get at it, probably voiding your warranty in the process. on a PC it's typically on the mobo somewhere, so I doubt it's much different with the PS3 hardware.Last edited by killgod; 03-01-2010, 11:00 AM.Comment

The funny thing is that I re-started a Madden franchise yesterday. I played the first two games and while I still couldn't run the ball worth dick (about 2 yards/carry with Forte) the games were great. I was hoping to blow through a season the next few days so I could trade it in and take advantage of that $40 trade coupon.Comment

I figured it was something complicated. I'm definitely not doing that.

Might as well just trade it in now, let me spoil what you're missing. You'd continue to get 2.0 YPC with the occasional 80yd TD run to the outside, get frustrated and throw the ball only to have a few pick six's a game ruin your season. After going 2-10 through 13 weeks you'd sim the rest to the offseason but your 3rd overall draft pick WR would not let you click on his name to sign, only to sign with the Ravens under a 6 year deal and you get dick.
At this point you snap the disc in half and get no rebate.
I think this error just saved you some money.Comment

Well I guess the positive side of this is that I won't be distracted by my PS3 and can actually do my homework now...Comment

Yeah, it was bad before, and the fact that certain developers can't even work on their debug machines is 10x worse.
I'm so curious as to where things go from here. Scale-wise, this seems worse than RROD just because of how many people have been boned. We'll see though.
Why the fuck didn't I finish Heavy Rain when I had the chance? Saturday night my girlfriend was all "You seem to really like it, just go ahead and finish it. We can go out next weekend." I should have listened.Comment
