This is a major failure on Sony's part. Cause I now realize I can't play anything...MLB The Show 09 is useless to me now.

        per cnn.com

Sony said it has pinpointed the problem with its PlayStation Network that has kept some PlayStation 3 users from playing games on or offline.

A blog posting on the PlayStation blog said Sony officials have identified the cause as a bug in the clock functionality incorporated into the PS3. They said it affects models older than the newest slim PS3.

A variety of error messages and problems have cropped up including:

        • The date of the PS3 system may be re-set to Jan 1, 2000.

        • When the user tries to sign in to the PlayStation Network, the following message appears on the screen; “An error has occurred. You have been signed out of PlayStation Network (8001050F)”.

        • When the user tries to launch a game, the following error message appears on the screen and the trophy data may disappear; “Failed to install trophies. Please exit your game.”

        • When the user tries to set the time and date of the system via the Internet, the following message appears on the screen; “The current date and time could not be obtained. (8001050F)”

        • Users are not able to play back certain rental videos downloaded from the PlayStation Store before the expiration date.

Sony said it hopes to have the problem resolved in the next 24 hours, but is warning people with the older units not to use their PS3s. Officials said those who try to use their consoles may have problems with trophies and not being able to restore certain data.

Sony said there were more than 40 million users in its PlayStation Network as of last month. There's been no word on how many have been impacted by the error.

CNN has asked Sony representatives for updates. We’ll let you know as soon as we hear from them.

I didn't say that, but you come on. The 360 is an accident waiting to happen. Why are you so insanely pro-360?

I love my 360, but every time it has a little hiccup, I worry about it failing. Why is this? BECAUSE IT HAS HAPPENED SO MANY TIMES (over 50% now yes?).

The Show 09 worked fine for me last night after this issue broke. I tried The Show, both R&C games, and both UC games and everything worked fine. I assume you just can't collect trophies, and any saves that may occur might be invalidated once (if?) Sony gets this fixed.

Only thing not working for me is Heavy Rain and the games I DLed from PSN. I've heard Dragon Age has issues too.

So I was playing NCAA and watching streams on the broswer until like 1 AM last night...Pretty sure my PS3 was/is fine.

Not gonna risk it, just wish I could turn it on and play offline.

LOL at getting something free for 1-2 days of not being able to play. When XBOX gave us that free POS Undertow it was because we couldnt play anything for a week.

The only thing I've heard is data/trophy loss.

I'd be irate if I were one of those being affected right now, but I'm not, so I'm not. Having the YLOD on the launch 60GB turned out to be a blessing in disguise after all.

Pretty much what NAHSTE said. And even then it's more precautionary. They were basically just like "if you do this you might lose things" as I guess they're expecting that there will have to be some firmware update or something.

Just wondering, if just unhook your ps3 from your network, wouldn't that prevent any further issues? Or unhooking and changing the time to the current date? I'm just throwing out stuff because I don't know what's going on lol

nope, none of that will work. Its the PS3 internal clock which is battery operated (battery backup) so even if its not plugged in you would still have the issue
