[360] Cloud saves coming to Xbox Live

I hadn't heard about this until listening to Giant Bomb's first E3 podcast. I'm actually a bit surprised it wasn't mentioned during MS's E3 press conference because cloud saving is a great feature.

These may not have made the cut to appear in Microsoft's E3 keynote earlier today but gamers will probably appreciate two new features mentioned in a letter from Xbox Live General Manager Marc Whitten. "Cloud Storage for Game Saves and Live Profiles" is first up and provides access to ones profile and saves from any console, at any time with the option to save to XBL servers instead of a memory unit or hard drive. It all sounds very similar to the service offered for PlayStation Plus but as Joystiq notes, so far exact details are scant. The other feature mentioned is support for "Beacons" which go one step further than broadcasting what you're playing or watching right now by allowing users to flag what they want to play, and lets friends on XBL or Facebook see that so they can meet you for a game. Check out the full letter after the break or over on the 'stiq, we'll sit back and dream of a future world where bringing our XBL profile by a friend's house to keep track of our beatdowns is as easy as just logging in.

I guess they were too busy telling everyone how much better their games are with Kinect?

They are also going to be incorporating a "beacon" service which sounds pretty sweet too.

It was definitely announced. I was surprised that it was mentioned in passing rather than making a big deal about it. Its possible that G4 talked about it rather than Microsoft, but I am certain I heard that news on the first day. Not a single fuck was given by me until they mentioned that profiles would also be stored on the cloud.

Not sure i would use this or anyone else. I have 2 360s and just grab the HDD and plug it into whichever one i want to use. Plus how fast will it be. Dont see need for it.

The first line of the article even says "These may not have made the cut to appear in Microsoft's E3 keynote earlier today but gamers will probably appreciate two new features mentioned in a letter from Xbox Live General Manager Marc Whitten."

There was some letter put out by one of the Live team guys that talked about it. They didn't even talk about it at the main presser which isn't surprising.

The beacons thing is kinda dumb it basically justs post shit on your facebook wall and other places saying your playing a game or something.

They talked about it a bit during the spike broadcast before the main presser started and G4 talked about it after.

It's always great to have online backups for your saves at least. Saves seem to get corrupted all the time. I know there was someone in the L.A. Noire thread that said their save became corrupted near the end of the game. They had to start completely over.

I guess if you consciously go in a back them up all the time. I have memory cards that I can do that with I guess. Also some saves are tied to your profile.

BTW I have never had a game save get corrupted. Last time was on the NES when I when I was writing my Kid Icarus password down wrong....DAMN zeros and "O's"

I like it, it's useful for when my console breaks down and i want to get a different(better!) mode of that console.

I agree, I havent had a save corrupted since PS2. And even then it only happened when using some shitty 3rd party memory card that had like 16x the space of a normal mem card.
