Unlucky number 13? - An Indepth look at past number 13s
2000
Rewind to the 2000 NBA Draft and Shooting Guard Courtney Alexander was chosen at number 13 . Lee led the nation in scoring in college where he played his ball at Fresno State . He was selected by the Orlando Magic who traded the rights to him just hours later to the Dallas Mavericks . Alexander came in and immediatly had a solid impact on the team making the all NBA Rookie Second Team . The highlight of Alexander`s carrer was replacing an injured Richard Hamilton in the Wizards lineup and scoring 33 points whilst earning player of the game honours v the Toronto Raptors . Alexander is no longer in the NBA
2001
The 13th pick in the 2001 NBA Draft belonged to the Houston Rockets . The Rockets chose Small Forward Richard Jefferson out of Arizona State with this pick . Jefferson was traded to the Nets on the same day , he later went on to play 7 solid seasons with the Nets as the teams 2nd or 3rd scoring option averaging 18 PPG . In his last season with the Nets Jefferson had his best scoring season to date with 22.6 PPG . This earned Jefferson a trade to the Milwaukee Bucks for Yi Jianlian and Bobby Simmons . Jefferson expressed his delight to be playing alongside Michael Redd in Milwaukee , but this partnership was not to last long as just this week Jefferson was traded to the San Antonio Spurs for Oberto , Thomas and Bruce Bowen
2002
The 13th Pick in the 2002 NBA Draft was held by the Milwaukee Bucks . They made a suprise selection by choosing Power Forward Marcus Haislip out of Tennessee .Haislip was placed into the starting lineup for the Bucks for the final 9 games of the season . In them 9 games the Bucks went 8-1 and secured a playoff spot . He was then relegated to the bench for the playoffs and didnt start another game for the Bucks . After a long stretch on waivers Haislip was picked up by the Indiana Pacers to help add depth incase of an injury to Jermaine O`Neal . Haislip however , impressed nobody and was cut soon after . The ex 13th pick is now playing in Europe for CB Málaga who are based in Spain .
2003
With the 13th Pick in the 2003 NBA Draft the Memphis Grizzlies selected Point Guard Marcus Banks out of UNLV . Banks picked up co-defensive player of the year honours in college for the Nevada based team . However , just hours later Banks was traded to the Boston Celtics along with Center Kendrick Perkins , after a year of poor performances and little playing time Banks was traded to the LA Lakers for Gary Payton . This was not to be however when Payton refused to take a physical reversing the trade . Banks was known for his good defense and hustle in Boston but more so for his poor shooting and horrible decision making . When the Boston Celtics drafted Point Guard Delonte West this would spell the end of Banks time in Boston . On January 26, 2006, it was announced that Banks, Mark Blount, Ricky Davis, and Justin Reed were traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves for Wally Szczerbiak, Michael Olowokandi and Dwayne Jones . After a bad year in Minnesota , Banks was on the move again this time to the Pheonix Suns in free agency . The Suns tried to make Banks into more of a shooting guard during the summer and the results were positive . The team however faced a tough proposition when entering Banks second year in Pheonix . Banks was set to make up to 21million dollars and was soon traded to the Miami Heat alongside Shawn Marion for Shaq . Banks however would not last long in Miami where he was traded once again with Shawn Marion to the Toronto Raptors for Jermaine O`Neal and Jamario Moon .
2004
Sebastian Telfair was chosen by the Portland Trail Blazers at pick 13 in the NBA Draft . Telfair was an exciting prospect straight out of High School . In 2005 Telfair was promoted to the Blazers starting lineup , where he put up decent numbers averaging 6.8 PPG and 3.8 APG . The Blazers however spiraled downwards recording 21 losses in their last 28 games which led the team to a franchise record low . In 2006 the Blazers appointed Nate McMillian ,under McMillian Telfair was promised a starting job at the shooting guard position . He was often paired with another high draftee in Martell Webster , again Telfair put up decent numbers but slightly below average for a starting guard in the NBA . Just 3months later Telfair was replaced by Steve Blake . The next season Telfair along with center Theo Ratliff and a 2008 second round pick were traded to Boston Celtics for guard Dan Dickau, center-forward Raef LaFrentz, and the 7th overall pick in the 2006 NBA Draft, Randy Foye, who was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves for the 6th overall pick, Brandon Roy . At the end of the following season the Celtics announced that Telfair would not be returning to the team . On July 31, 2007 the Celtics traded Telfair, along with Al Jefferson, Gerald Green, Ryan Gomes, Theo Ratliff, and two first-round draft picks, to the Minnesota Timberwolves for Kevin Garnett . Telfair recorded a carrer high with the TWolves with 9.8 PPG and 5.9 APG . His good form was recently rewarded with a new 3 year deal
2005
In the 2005 NBA Draft the Charlotte Bobcats selected Forward Sean May out of the University of North Carolina where he helped lead the Tar Heels to a national championship. May started his pro carrer strongly by being named MVP of the Rocky Mountain Revue summer league . May however had his rookie season cut short with an ankle injury . Injuries were to be May`s biggest downfall in the long run . Never really recovering from his injury , May was deemed unfit to play by the NBA and Bobcats medical staff and was placed on injury reserve for the fore-seeable future . May is now an unrestricted Free Agent .
2006
With the 13 pick in the 2006 NBA Draft the Phillidalphia 76ers selected
Thabo Sefolosha . Sefolosha was later to be traded to the Chicago Bulls that very day. Bulls coach Scott Skiles immediatly fell in love with Sefolosha quoting his long reach and experience as the main reasons. In the summer league of his rookie season Sefolosha got amazing reviews from ESPN experts and looked to be on track to a good carrer . Sefolosha however , only managed to start 4 games in his rookie season and was traded to the Thunder for a 2009 First Round Pick .
2007
With the 13th Pick in the 2007 NBA Draft the New Orleans Hornets selected Forward Julian Wright from Kansas passing up on Rodney Stuckey , Al Thornton and Rudy Fernandez in the mean time . Wright who was coming off a good college carrer where he was named to the Big 12 2nd Team and All American 3rd team . In his rookie season Wright only started 1 game and averaged a modest 11 minutes per game . Wright finished his rookie season with stats of 3.9 PPG and 2.1 RPG. Wright`s playing time was increased in his second season where he started 19 of the 54 games he appeared in averaging 4.4 PPG and 2.8 RPG. Wright is still with the Hornets .
2008
In the 2008 NBA Draft the Portland Trail Blazers once again owned the 13th Pick. They drafted Shooting Guard Brandon Rush out of Kansas University . Rush was later traded to the Indiana Pacers that day . Rush helped lead the Jayhawks to the National Championship where his best game was being named MVP in the semi finals against North Carolina . Rush scored 25points and recorded 7 Rebounds. In a decent Rookie season Rush averaged 6.1 PPG 2.4 RPG and .7 APG . While showing some flashes of brilliance , Rush still has plenty to work on
The only "star" taken past pick 55 in the last 20years
Whats the chances of pick number 13 becoming a star? A historical look at the average stats of pick number 13s over the last 20 Years.
The chances of a pick number 13 becoming what is classed as a "star" is around 20% . In fact picks 11-20 produce twice as many busts/bench fillers as stars when you look at the data . The average stats of a pick number 13 in the last 20 years is 9.8 PPG , 3.7 RPG and 1.9 APG .
Did you know?
Did you know that your chances of finding a star/role player are INCREASED when picking at 13 instead of 11 and 12? Well its true , Pick number 12 is the unlucky draft number in the last 20years . Only 5% of all the people taken at pick number 12 have turned into stars , with 15% of them being "Solid players" with a further 40% just being Role Players . At number 11 we have the highest percentage of "Did not played" (DNP) players out of the top 20 . Over the last 20 years , players taken at pick 11 have averaged 2 points less than at 13 .
The Draft as a whole
If the team with the #2 pick was told their new star would have expected career averages of 13 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists it might not do much in the way of season ticket sales and exciting the fans . In fact pick number 3 has produced the biggest amount of stars in the last 20 years with a huge 85% percent which is 15 percent more than what number one has provided. Just looking at the numbers of the top 10 picks in the last 20 drafts makes you wonder why teams have been trading away such big peices for draft picks . Maybe it is in search for the "next star" or maybe its just reaching for nothing? You would have to ask the teams to find out that yourself.
On draft night there was many suprises and none more so than the Pacers selecting Ex-Tarheel Tyler Hansbrough . Many people had money on the Pacers selecting DeJaun Blair at this spot but this wasnt to be . Larry Bird stuck with his gut feeling and selected the ex ACC star right away .
Bird said he was "delighted" to pick up Hansbrough and was actually worried that he would have been gone before the Pacers pick.
Positives
Hansbrough can come in straight away and compete for a starting spot . He is a tough as nails guy who brings energy and leadership to a team , his work ethic and overall attitude is second to none .
Negatives
Hansbrough may struggle scoring in the NBA as his old college ways of "bullying oppositions Power Forwards" of a smaller stature wont pay off as much with the cream of the crop in the NBA . He also needs to work on his midrange game to be trully effective offensivly . Many people also think that Hansbrough doesnt extend while attempting to go over taller players which costs him easy baskets.
Tyler Hansbrough takes time out to talk to the loyal Pacer fans

How much does it mean to you to get all the love and support from your hometown, Poplar Bluff MO.?
Posted By Tyler Hansbrough
It means a lot, growing up there. I have a lot of close friends there. It's where I was born and raised so it's always nice to know you can go back to your hometown and have plenty of support.

Hey Tyler! Long time Tar Heel fan. How did it feel to get your jersey from larry Bird?
Posted By Tyler Hansbrough
I was a big Larry Bird fan when I was young and it was very exciting for him to hand me a jersey.

Are you excited to play in Indiana?
Posted By Tyler Hansbrough
I'm very thrilled to be a Pacers and I'm looking forward to the opportunity to be in Indiana.

What are you looking foward to the most about being a Pacer?
Posted By Tyler Hansbrough
I guess you could say playing in the NBA. It's always been a dream of mine. I used to watch the Pacers a lot and I'm glad to be part of the program.
Posted by Ryan
Have you talked to any of the other Pacers members yet?
Posted By Tyler Hansbrough
Yeah, I talked to Roy Hibbert last night. He was at the draft. He congratulated me.

Tyler, how are you going to get along with your new teammate, Mike Dunleavy, the Dukie?
Posted By Tyler Hansbrough
I think we'll put our UNC-Duke thing behind and concentrate on being Pacers now. There might be some trash-talking during the season whenever UNC plays Duke.
Posted by Fransisco
Hi, Tyler ... what dou you think your role will be in the Pacer team next season?
Posted By Tyler Hansbrough
I think I'll be a high-energy guy that plays a lot of good defense and contributes right away.
Posted by Grangerisnumberone
Have you reached your ceiling as a player or do you think you have some as-yet untapped potential?
Posted By Tyler Hansbrough
I think I have a lot of upside to me with my work ethic. There's a lot of improvement and I have a lot I can change in my game for the better. I'm working on my NBA 3-point range and also my left hand around the basket, for example.

Do you think you'll be able to take some of the pressure off of Danny Granger scoring wise?
Posted By Tyler Hansbrough
I was a capable scorer in college, led my team in scoring four years so I think I have scoring ability but I'm more about winning ballgames and helping out the teams.
Pacers select A.J Price with the 52nd Pick in the Draft
The Pacers once again chose a solid but not spectacular player with their 2nd pick of the night . This time it was Ex-UCONN Point Guard A.J Price , Price should jump in as the Pacers 3rd point guard behind T.J Ford and Travis Deiner .
The Pacers have accepted losing Jarrett Jack in free agency and needed to fill the Point Guard or SF position in the draft (Marquies Daniels) . Price said that it is an "honour to play for such a historic team as the Pacers" and has vowed to work hard and force his way into the team .
Positives
Price at his best is a explosive point guard who can finish at the rim with decent midrange shooting . His ability to stop and shoot at the drop of a dime is one of his main strenghts . He is a solid hardworking guy alot like Hansbrough who should do ok with limited minutes.
Negatives
Price somewhat fell off the map last year as he looked groggy and undercooked coming off a knee injury the year before . He seems to have lost some of his explosiveness when attacking the rim and will need to find it if he expects to excel in the NBA . Price is also known to take some bad mirange shots when the oppoistion is in a half-court press.
The NBA's Most Improved Player and first-time All-Star is adding yet another honor to the list.
Danny Granger is amongst 24 other players called up to the Team USA squad for the upcoming camp in Italy in July . Granger who was 5th in scoring in the NBA last season with 25.8 PPG said "this is my biggest honor to date , playing for your country is something special" .
The July USA Basketball Men’s National Team mini-camp will feature practice sessions on July 23 and July 24 at Valley High School, and the mini-camp will be capped by the USA Basketball Showcase, a Blue-White intra-squad game, on Saturday, July 25, 8 p.m. (PDT) at the Thomas & Mack Center on the campus of UNLV.
Hopefully this is just another step to getting Granger`s name onto the nation map .
Pacers look to have a cool team next season, i searched hansbrough and A.J Price on youtube and they both seem to be pretty exciting players, hopefully Price will get his fair share of minutes

Honestly im not nowhere near as excited as i was before the draft . Hopefully Hans will do a good job tho but im skeptical
We still need somebody who can shoulder the scoring with Danny but we seem to be getting some peices together .... i guess.
