New York, NY - Three of the best QBs returned for another year, including two Heisman winners in Tim Tebow and Sam Bradford, but it was the darkhorse QB Dan LeFevour from the MAC that took the nation by storm. LeFevour, the QB for the Central Michigan Chippewas may have had one of the best statistical seasons in history as he threw for over 4,000 yards, ran for nearly 1,000 yards, and scored 50 total touchdowns. But many voters questioned the competition level of the MAC. Many saw the multi-talented LeFevour throw six TDs on national television in the MAC championship while Tim Tebow exited out of the SEC championship early with a broken thumb. Many thought that LeFevour might have accomplished enough to win the Heisman and when only Dan LeFevour, Tim Tebow, and PSU HB Evan Royster were invited to the Heisman Trophy Presentation, a recent poll had suggested that the public felt that LeFevour would be the winner.
So it came as a surprise when the Florida QB Tim Tebow won in a landslide to take home his 2nd Heisman trophy. Tebow also put together an incredible season and he missed a few games with injuries. Plus, Tebow had to do it against the best conference in college football, the SEC. So one of the greatest players in college football history now not only has two Heisman trophies, but will now have a chance to win his third national championship. Though it is still unclear whether Tebow will play in the title game but it would be foolish at this point to count out Tebow.
LeFevour would come in as the runner up but would take home both the Maxwell and O'Brien awards. Penn State HB Evan Royster would come in 3rd and take home the Doak Walker award for the nation's best RB. The forgotten QB Sam Bradford, last year's Heisman winner came in 4th and rounding out the list was Notre Dame WR Golden Tate who came up with many a clutch catch for the undefeated Fighting Irish. But it would be Oklahoma State WR Dez Bryant who took home the Belitnikoff award for the nation's best receiver. Tate actually was not even a finalist for the Belitnikoff.Last edited by Emac78; 09-20-2009, 08:26 PM.Comment

#10 Oregon State (9-3) vs #25 USF (8-4)
El Paso, TX - Oregon State head coach Mike Riley would put his undefeated bowl record on the line versus the South Florida Bulls in the Sun Bowl. After last year's 3-0 "toilet bowl" between Oregon State and Pittsburgh, El Paso hoped to see more points on the scoreboard. On a side note, this would be the third time in four years that Oregon State had been to the Sun Bowl. The one year in between that the Beavers did not go to the Sun Bowl, Oregon went to the Sun Bowl. That year, OSU actually was slated to go to the Sun Bowl but the bowl had a clause that allowed the bowl to not allow a team back-to-back appearances so the Sun Bowl chose the Ducks. Apparently, the Sun Bowl elected not to use the clause this season.
This time around, the Beavers would have both of the Rodgers brothers healthy and were coming in riding high after the upset win over the rival Ducks in the Civil War. The Beavers were now ranked in the top ten so a win over USF might allow Oregon State to finish the season in the top ten. QB Sean Canfield would start the game as Lyle Moevao was still dealing with a sore shoulder.
El Paso must have been thinking "here we go again" as South Florida went three-and-out as QB Matt Grothe threw three incomplete passes. Then OSU HB Jacquizz Rodgers was stuffed and briefly left the game holding his shoulder. Fortunately, it was nothing serious but OSU would start the game with their own three-and-out. South Florida looked no better on their ensuing possession, going three-and-out again. Then OSU's possession was stopped in its tracks when QB Sean Canfield was sacked by DE George Selvie as the Beavers were already feeling his presence for another Beaver three-and-out.
USF DE George Selvie sacks QB Sean Canfield.
But on the Bulls' next possession, Grothe would be hit after getting rid of the ball. He would leave the game holding his back and would not return. That would leave freshman QB BJ Daniels to take over. Daniels would not do much better as USF went three-and-out. As the "thrilling" 1st quarter came to an end, the Beavers finally had a drive going.
Canfield put together a long, methodical drive, connecting with WR James Rodgers a couple times to keep the drive alive. Then at the 1-yard line, Canfield was hit as he threw the ball as USF OLB Chris Robinson came up with the interception in the red zone to prevent Oregon State from scoring on a 15-play drive.
OSU QB Sean Canfield hit in throwing motion for a red zone interception.
But with USF backed up against their own end zone, OSU brought some pressure with a blitz. Daniels threw the ball before he was ready and OSU CB Patrick Henderson was able to make the interception and return it to the house for the first score of the game to put the Beavers on top 7-0.

South Florida continued to struggle on offense as HB Mike Ford could not find any running room against OSU's #1 rush defense and BJ Daniels could not find open receivers to throw to. The Beavers' pass rush was not getting sacks but was causing enough pressure on Daniels to force him to throw before he wanted to. As a result, USF would go three-and-out again. Then OSU HB Jacquizz Rodgers found some daylight up the gut as FB Ryan McCants opened up a huge hole and Quizz outran everybody 80 yards to the house to put the Beavers up 14-0.
OSU HB Jacquizz Rodgers takes it 80 yards to the house.
Just when it looked like USF was dead in the water, the Bulls engineered a good looking methodical drive that ended with HB Mike Ford muscling his way in on a 4-yard TD scamper to make it 14-7 OSU.
USF HB Mike Ford muscles in on a 4-yard TD scamper.
Canfield countered back with an impressive two-minute drill but after a USF DE George Selvie sack in the red zone with very little time left, the Beavers had to settle for a 25-yard field goal to take a 17-7 lead into halftime.
Aside from the one scoring drive, USF HB Mike Ford was running into a brick wall, and after one more carry, Ford left the game holding his ribs. Ford would not return either with bruised ribs. Then QB BJ Daniels tried connecting on a deep pass but OSU FS Suaesi Tuimaunei was in position and climbed the ladder to make the interception. Then Tuimaunei took it all the way back for another OSU pick-six to put the Beavers up 24-7.
OSU FS Suaesi Tuimaunei climbs the ladder and returns the interception for a pick-six.
After another three-and-out, OSU QB Sean Canfield would lead another good drive into the red zone. But a holding call on TE John Reese would negate a Canfield to Howard Croom TD pass. As a result, the Beavers would get a 39-yard field goal to open the 4th quarter going ahead 27-7. On the next USF possession, Daniels would try to throw a pass over the middle through the defense but OSU OLB Keith Pankey came up with the interception. Taking advantage of the field position, Canfield hit WR James Rodgers to get the Beavs in the red zone. Then on a jet sweep, James Rodgers got by three USF defenders to score on the 7-yard TD run. Justin Kahut would clank the extra point attempt off the upright but the Beavers were still up big 33-7.
OSU WR James Rodgers scores on the jet sweep.
The game was never in doubt from that point as the Beavers cruised to another Sun Bowl victory to give Mike Riley a perfect 6-0 bowl record. If you would have told Beaver fans at the beginning of the season that OSU would possibly finish in the top ten, win the Civil War and beat USC, they would have taken that outcome so it was a pretty successful season for the Beavers.

We had a good season but let's not get too carried away about winning the Sun Bowl. At least USF was ranked in the top 25 so it's always good to beat a ranked team. And we're likely to finish in the top ten so that's exciting. There should be a lot to build on for next year. Unfortunately, Moevao and Canfield will be gone next season so we'll be starting an inexperienced QB.Comment

#3 Penn State (10-2) vs #9 Oregon (10-2)
Royster Leads PSU to Victory
PSU HB Evan Royster rushes for 154 yards and three TDs while also catching a TD pass. Here Royster gets his 3rd TD on the ground with a 10-yard scamper up the gut.
Pasadena, CA - This year's Rose Bowl was probably the most hyped bowl game aside from the National Championship because it matched two teams that were considered title contenders just a few weeks ago. It was the "old versus the new" as on one side you had Penn State's plain, white uniforms and on the other Oregon's modern, flashy look. Though the Ducks did go with the conservative all green look. Penn State had Joe Paterno who many have speculated might have been coaching his last game against Chip Kelly who was in his first season as Oregon's head coach. Kelly had already done what Mike Bellotti was never able to do as he had taken the Ducks to the Rose Bowl.
Penn State was still without their starting QB Daryll Clark and their top CB AJ Wallace so most were leaning toward a Duck win. So it came as a surprise to see the Nittany Lions march right down the field on the opening possession and take a 7-0 lead behind a WR James McDonald TD run out of the slot. Then Oregon QB Jeremiah Masoli threw a pass off his back foot and the ball floated up for an easy PSU interception. It looked like Penn State was going to put this game away as they took over at the Duck 40-yard line. But when QB Kevin Newsome was sacked on 4th-and-five, Oregon gained some badly needed momentum. And the Ducks drove right down the field where Masoli pitched to Blount for a TD on the option to tie the game 7-7. Later, Newsome, under pressure was hit as he threw and Oregon DT Simi Toeaina made the pick and rumbled into the end zone to put Oregon up 14-7.
But in the 2nd quarter Newsome found WR Chaz Powell wide open who was not tackled until he had gained 48 yards to set up a 44-yarder to make it 14-10 Oregon. Late in the quarter, the Ducks would be pinned at their own 1-yard line after a great PSU punt. On the next play, Masoli out of the gun was tackled in the end zone for a safety to cut the Duck lead to only 14-12. However, at the end of the half, Masoli hit WR DJ Davis who had broken press coverage for a 34-yard TD to put Oregon ahead 21-12 at halftime.
In the 3rd quarter Newsome was picked off by Duck OLB Spencer Paysinger as Oregon took over inside the PSU 30-yard line. Masoli would cash in with a 1-yard TD pass to WR Jamere Holland. Plus the Ducks converted on the 2-point conversion when Holland scored on a screen to put the Ducks up 29-12. But PSU countered back when WR James McDonald caught a short pass and was not stopped until he had gained 60 yards. Then HB Evan Royster would strike paydirt with a 1-yard TD scamper to cut the Duck lead to 29-19. After an Oregon three-and-out, the Nittany Lions executed a perfect screen pass to Royster who was able to gain 52 yards on the play. Which set up another 4-yard TD scamper for Royster as PSU was now suddenly only down 29-26. Royster continued to prove that he was worthy of the Doak Walker award as the Duck defense could not contain him or his backup Green. As a result, the Lions marched their way into the red zone where Newsome under huge pressure was hit as he passed. The ball floated up in the air but the "duck" was caught in the end zone by who else but Evan Royster for a 5-yard TD reception to put PSU back on top 33-29.
In the 4th quarter, Chip Kelly decided to go for it on 4th-and-two at the PSU 45-yard line where HB LeGarrette Blount was stuffed just like he was throughout the entire game. But PSU could not blow the game open as they would go three-and-out. However, the Ducks would be stopped in their tracks and forced to punt from their own end zone so PSU took over at midfield. With 4:17 left, Newsome connected with TE Mickey Shuler deep for a 40-yard gain. On the ensuing play, Royster ran it right up the gut for a 10-yard TD scamper to put PSU up 40-29. The Ducks were not done yet though as Masoli connected with Blount on a screen for what turned into a 55-yard gain. The big gain set up a Blount 1-yard TD run. The Ducks failed to score the 2-point conversion but it was still only a 40-35 PSU lead. But all suspense quickly came to an end when Royster ran for 1st down after 1st down as the clock continued to tick down until the Lions were in the victory formation. Joe Paterno and the Nittany Lions win the Rose Bowl. What better way for Paterno to exit?

#4 Cincinnati (11-1) vs #7 Boise State (10-2)
Classic Shootout
(top) Freshman BSU WR Chris Potter with the 9-yard game-winning TD reception with only :58 left in the game. (bottom left) Cincy QB Tony Pike threw three TDs in the 1st quarter. (bottom right) BSU QB Kellen Moore throws for 412 yards and five TDs.
New Orleans, LA - This year's Sugar Bowl was billed as the most intriguing of the bowl lineups as it matched up two teams that always play with a chip on their shoulder and probably still do not get the respect they deserve. It would be the Bearcats' second year in a row to play in a BCS bowl as Cincinnati played in the Orange Bowl last year. If Cincy did not lose their opening game against Rutgers, they may very well have been in the national championship. While Boise State was unable to even win the WAC conference and had not been to a BCS bowl since the memorable Fiesta Bowl against Oklahoma. Everybody expected a lot of offense and they were not disappointed as the two teams put up over 1,000 yards of total offense combined.
The Bearcats were on fire out of the opening gates moving the ball down the field with ease. QB Tony Pike was able elude pressure, step up and gunned a deep pass to a wide open TE Ben Guidugli for a 35-yard TD to put Cincy in the lead early, 7-0. Boise State looked like they would quickly respond as the Broncos also easily move down the field. However, inside the red zone, QB Kellen Moore threw a jump ball up for grabs in the end zone that was picked off by Cincy CB Justin Moore. The Bearcats wasted no time as Pike threw deep into the end zone to WR Marshawn Gilyard for a 36-yard TD to put Cincy ahead 14-0. But Pike was not done yet as he would later hit WR DJ Woods in the back of the end zone for a 7-yard TD connection to put Cincy up 21-0. Pike had already thrown three TDs and the Bearcats looked like they were in complete control. Then on the last play of the 1st quarter, BSU HB Jeremy Avery got a big 26-yard gain on a toss but went down awkwardly out of bounds, leaving the game with a strained knee.
When the 2nd quarter started, viewers learned that Avery had a strained knee and was out for the game. But the Broncos finally did something offensively as QB Kellen Moore found TE Tommy Gallorda wide open over the middle who ran in the 18-yard TD to put Boise State on the board, down 21-7. Then Cincy QB Tony Pike was drilled in the pocket in throwing motion. The ball floated in the air and landed in the hands of BSU CB Kyle Wilson who took it the short distance for a pick-six. Suddenly, Boise State was only down 21-14. The defenses for both teams started playing better as the Bearcats would take a 27-17 lead into halftime.
Coming into the 2nd half, it felt like Boise State had weathered the storm and were right back in the game. Defense dominated the the 3rd quarter as neither offense could make a play. But eventually the Bearcats were able to move the ball on the ground as HB Jacob Ramsey was finding a lot of running room. His backup, John Goebel would vulture a TD off of Ramsey with an 8-yard TD scamper to put the Bearcats up 34-17.
But in the 4th quarter, Boise State's offense looked unstoppable as QB Kellen Moore was on fire, eventually connecting with freshman WR Kirby Moore for a 26-yard TD to cut the Cincy lead to 34-24. Boise State would get the ball back and march right back down the field where it came down to a 4th-and-one at the Cincy 14-yard line. Where BSU HB DJ Harper found room up the middle for an easy 1st down. Then Moore hooked up with Kirby Moore again for a 15-yard TD to make it a 34-31 Cincy lead with still 5:38 remaining in the game.
The Broncos were able to stop the Bearcats again. But Moore would make a crucial mistake as he was picked off by Cincy CB Chris Williams who took it in for an easy pick-six. So the Broncos were now behind 41-31 with only 4:34 remaining. However, Moore would hit WR Toshi Franklin open between a hole in the zone. Franklin made the catch and housed the 62-yard reception to cut the Bearcat lead to 41-38 with still 3:49 to go. Cincinnati head coach Brian Kelly decided to play keep away as the Bearcats tried to milk the clock but when WR DJ Woods was tackled short of the 1st down, Cincy had to punt with 1:49 still on the clock. Boise State would start from their own 20-yard line. Moore suddenly did his best impression of Tom Brady as the Bronco offense was unstoppable but it was also due to a questionable Cincy defensive gameplan. Aggressive blitzes were leaving receivers completely uncovered. Eventually with :58 left on the clock, Moore threw into the end zone where freshman WR Chris Potter made the clutch 9-yard TD reception to put Boise State on top 45-41.
It was now up to Cincy QB Tony Pike to engineer a heroic last second drive. But on the first play from their own 25-yard line, Pike was sacked. However, with :40 left, Pike completed a 1st down pass on 3rd-and-long to WR DJ Woods. But on the next play, Pike threw a ball up where sophomore BSU CB Antwon Murray made the interception to seal this classic shootout shut for Boise State.
