    Dallas Cowboys Year Report
    ================================================== =
    Coach: Jimmy Johnson
    Yrs: 2
    Season Record: 7-9
    Overall Record: 8 - 24 (.250)
Status: Many people were doubting Jimmy Johnsons ability to be a head coach when he set of to an inauspicious debut in the 1989 season at a 1-15 mark. The horrible year for the Cowboys however was remedied with the success of rookie runningback, Emmitt Smith. With a newfound running game to complement a young Troy Aikman the Cowboys actually managed a respectable 7-9 year that will most likely continue to increase. Jimmy signed a 5 year deal when initially joining Dallas, and it appears he may be able to make up for last years horrible record.

    Cowboys Individual Player Statistics
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------

    Cowboys Team MVP
    --------------------------------------------------------
    LB Jack Del Rio

    Cowboys Player Standouts
    ---------------------------------------------------------------
    1. - HB Emmitt Smith 393 att 3.8 avg 1,527 yds 8 td 9 fum 50 rec 394 yds 1 td
Info: This Florida Gator runningback made a huge impact in his first season with the NFL. After being selected in the 1st round by the Dallas Cowboys they had high hopes and put Smith to work from the get go as the teams starter, and boy did it pay off. Smith trampled defenses for over 1,900 combined yards, and managed to score 9 total touchdowns for the teams offense. Emmitt Smith not only proved himself to be a great back for the Cowboys, but Smith stomped the competition on his way to winning the Offensive Rookie Of The Year award.

    2. - [b]DE Daniel Stubbs 37 Tak 8 Loss 12 Sack 2 FF 1 FR[/ b]
Info: Jeff Herrod not only led the Colts defense in tackles, but this linebacker Daniel Stubbs surprised the Dallas Cowboys as he led his team in sacks this year by double the closest competitor. Stubbs 12 sacks saw him earn his first pro bowl appearance. Stubbs will hopefully continue to play at the level he produced this season and thusly bring the Cowboys rush attack up a notch.

    3. - LB Jack Del Rio 107 Tak 6 Loss 6 Sack 2 FF 8 Deflect 2 Int
Info: Linebacker Jack Del Rio once again produced a solid year for the Cowboys. His 107 tackles were second on the team and he established himself all over the field with not only 6 sacks on the quarterback, but 8 deflections and 2 interceptions.

    4. QB Troy Aikman 283 of 502 att 56% - 2,843 yds 16 td 13 int 72.5 qbrat
Info: Troy Aikman proved that the Cowboys werent wrong in throwing him to the wolves last year, as he produced much better this season as a result. In 1989 Aikman had a horrible 11 touchdown to 18 interception ratio in the Cowboys 1-15 run. This season improving on all marks with 16 touchdowns with only 13 interceptions, and 6 more victories. If Aikman can progress the way he did this year this off-season, then Dallas is in for a solid future with him at their quarterback position.

    Cowboys Player Letdowns
    -------------------------------------------------------------
    1. - WR Kelvin Martin 46 rec 13.5 avg 623 yds 4 td 7 drop
Info: Kelvin Martin definitely did not have #1 receiver numbers in 1990, however it was not entirely his fault. With the plans of youngster Michael Irvin stepping into a larger role this year, it was expected that Martin wouldnt put up stellar numbers. However Martin was supposed to be the clear cut #1 on the team, and with a paltry 623 yards leading his team receiving, there were definitely some problems in the passing game. With 4 touchdowns to his 7 drops Martin did not wow with his hands this season. Next year will most likely see Michael Irvin being given a shot at the #1 spot, as a short-fused Dallas may not want to stick around with Martin for much longer.

    2. - CB Manny Hendrix 21 Tak 5 Deflect 1 Int 1 TD
Info: While Manny Hendrix did account for the only defensive touchdown of the entire season for the Cowboys, he still was a letdown this year. Hendrix was the #2 cornerback for the Cowboys going in, and his 5 deflections and 1 pick outcome definitely did not light up the charts. Hendrix has Robert Williams breathing down his neck to take over the spot, so next season there will likely be a tough battle to see who makes it out.

    3. - K Ken Willis 21 of 35 fg 60% - 29 of 30 xp 96%
Info: Ken Willis missed 14 field goals during the year for the Cowboys, definitely not what they wanted. With those kinds of numbers Dallas could be looking for a new kicker in the off-season. While Willis does have 1 more year in his contract, it is unknown whether or not the Cowboys and Jimmy Johnson will put up with a 60% field goal rate.

    Cowboys Review
    -----------------------------------------------------
Review: The Dallas Cowboys had a huge turnaround this season compared to last year. If they can fill in the final pieces, and watch their current young stars develop in the off-season, the Cowboys could easily find themselves in good territory come next year. With Jimmy Johnson bringing a good coaching style to the team, how far they go is truly up to them. With the three offensive weapons Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith, and Michael Irvin all putting up decent years could be a sign of things to come.

      Miami Dolphins Year Report
      ================================================== =
      Coach: Don Shula
      Yrs: 28
      Season Record: 6-10
      Overall Record: 275 - 129 (.671)
Status: Don Shula is the epitemy of head coaching in the NFL. After spending 1963-1969 coaching the Baltimore Colts in numerous successful seasons Shula garnered the Miami Dolphins job. Of which Shula has held for a remarkable 21 year tenure so far, and there is no sign of him leaving anytime soon. However this year is the worst season of Don Shulas entire 28 year coaching career. His 6-10 record, matching his 1988 output, are the worst records hes ever posted in a season. Without a dobut Shulas 67% winning percentage is what makes him most attractive to the Dolphins franchise. As long as this isnt a sign of any sort of upcoming downfall, Shula will no doubt retain the Miami coaching job because of his great career with them.

      1. - CB Liffort Hobley 40 Tak 1 FF 1 FR 14 Deflect 10 Int 3 TD
Info: Nobody expected the year out of Liffort Hobley that he produced. Not only did he amazingly bring down the teams MVP award, he won the starting cornerback spot after dethroning Tim McKyer early in the season. Hobley had a league leading 10 interceptions, of which he returned 3 for touchdowns. Hobley also proved his reliability in coverage with his 14 deflections which tied Louis Oliver and Jarvis Williams for the team lead. Hobley shot into stardom as he garnered his first pro bowl appearance with his outstanding 1990 campaign. To bad the same could not be said for the rest of the Dolphins who suffered in the 6-10 year.

      2. - [b]LB John Offerdahl 134 Tak 8 Loss 7 Sack 4 FF 3 FR 12 Deflect 1 Int 1 Sfty[/ b]
Info: John Offerdahl proved why he is the team captain on defense for the Miami Dolphins. Offerdahls 134 tackles smashed the closest competitor on his team with 88. His 7 sacks also tied defensive end Jeff Cross for the team lead. Not to mention he caused 4 fumbles throughout the season. Offerdahl was one of the only reasons that the Dolphins didnt go 0-16 in 1990 as their defense and offense combined for bad years.

      3. - RT Mark Dennis 52 Pancakes 8 Sacks Allowed
Info: The 24 year old youngster, Mark Dennis, accounted for the best season out of all the Dolphins linemen. Dennis had 52 pancakes leading the team by 18.

      Dolphins Player Letdowns
      -------------------------------------------------------------
      1. - QB Dan Marino 283 of 521 att 54% - 3,111 yds 11 td 24 int 60.1rat
Info: For whatever reason, this year, Dan Marino looked nothing like the Dan Marino Miami fans have come to love. The Dolphins quarterback turned in his first ever season where he had more interceptions than touchdowns, and by such a large amount! The Dolphins were befuddled as to why Dan Marino was only able to complete and amateur 11 touchdowns on the season. Whether it was the complete utter lack of a run game, or just some inconsistency by certain offensive linemen, Dan Marino had no help whatsoever this year, and the way he played, certainly didnt make things any easier.

      2. - WR Mark Clayton 62 Rec 12.1 Avg 754 Yds 6 Td 4 Drop
Info: While the main reason for Mark Claytons poor season was because of a lackluster performance by his quarterback, it was still a disappointing year. Clayton had the lowest touchdown total of his career since starting since his 1985 year (4). And his worst yardage total since his rookie year in 1983 when he didnt even start. Clayton definitely was a let down for the Dolphins this year in an overall disappointing offensive year.

      3. - HB Sammie Smith 155 Att 3.3 Avg 514 Yds 3 TD 2 Fum 7 Rec 65 Yds
Info: Sammie Smith got the full time start in his sophomore season in the NFL. After a rookie campaign that say him gain 659 yards and 5 touchdowns on 200 carries, he was expected to pick up the pace in 1990 and give Dan Marino a little breathing room. However that never took place, after a few starts Smith obtained a nagging injury that plagued him throughout the year. Smith ended with only 514 yards and 3 touchdowns on the year, splitting time with backup Tony Collins. The Dolphins run game was definitely a sore point in 1990 only accounting for 7 touchdowns total between all runners.

      Dolphins Review
      -----------------------------------------------------
Review: The Miami Dolphins are in trouble. A horrible season in 1990 is not looking good for their future. While they are solid in the coaching department, all other areas, including those that are normally considered locked, are questionable. Dan Marino put together a horrible year with only 11 touchdowns and 24 interceptions. That is just plain unacceptable for any starting quarterback in the league, let alone one with the caliber of Marino. Not to mention a disappointing progression by Sammie Smith and Tony Collins did not lead to the run game that Miami was hoping would emerge. With the 25th ranked defense that gave up 30+ points in 6 of the first 7 games of the year where the Dolphins went 1-6 they too were disappointing. With a 2-7 start before the bye week things were looking mighty grim for Miami. Luckily Shula managed to salvage what little he could after the break and finish off the year on a good note with a 4-3 end. However if Liffort Hobley and Mark Dennis are the only good things about the year for Miami, then you know theres a problem. Hopefully next season will turn around as the surprise emergence of New England did not help Miamis chances in their own division.

        Philadelphia Eagles Year Report
        ================================================== =
        Coach: Buddy Ryan
        Yrs: 5
        Season Record: 13-3
        Overall Record: 46-32-1 (.582)
Status: Buddy Ryan took over the Eagles head coaching position back in 1986. He had a rather inauspicious start with a 5-10-1 season that left a bad taste in Philly fans mouthes. However ever since he has improved the Eagles record each and every season. From 5 to 7 wins, to 10 wins, to 11 wins, and now 1990 where he put up a 13 win season with this Eagles team, and managed to bring them to a Super Bowl. If theres any sort of grand master formula on how a coach should progress his team, this 5 year span by Buddy Ryan must be the template. Without a doubt the hard coaching of Buddy Ryan, especially his emphasis on a tough defense led to the Eagles super bowl victory. Im not sure whether the Eagles wouldve been able to accomplish what they did this year without the likes of Buddy Ryan. The bad news? Ryans contract just happens to end this season. There was some unusual buzz about Buddy Ryan having troubles with the management of the Eagles and that he would potentially not be resigned. But theres nothing that mends burned bridges like a Super Bowl victory.

        Eagles Team MVP
        --------------------------------------------------------
        QB Randall Cunningham

        Eagles Player Standouts
        ---------------------------------------------------------------
        1. - WR Calvin Williams 86 Rec 10.2 Avg 880 Yds 8 TD 4 Drop
Info: Rookie wide receiver Calvin Williams bullet ahead of the pack in 1990 as the go-to receiver for Philadelphia Eagles quarterback, Randall Cunningham. Williams led the Eagles in receiving with 86 catches on the year, 20 more than fellow rookie Fred Barnett. He also took the lead in touchdowns by a single touchdown margin. Calvin Williams left the 1990 season just a few votes behind Emmitt Smith for the Offensive Rookie Of The Year award. However Williams gets the last laugh as he goes home with a Super Bowl ring in his first season in the NFL, talk about starting on the right foot.

        2. - [b]WR Fred Barnett 66 Rec 12.6 Avg 838 Yds 7 TD 6 Drop [/ b]
Info: Its rare that an NFL team can draft a wide receiver that can contribute the way the Eagles did this season. But its even more rare for a team to do it twice in the same draft! Not only did Calvin Williams explode on the scene in his first year, but fellow rookie temmate Fred Barnett exceeded his own set expectations. Barnett finished the year with 66 catches and 838 yards, including 7 touchdown receptions, just one short of the team lead.

        3. - CB Eric Allen 50 Tak 1 FR 10 Deflect 4 Int 44 KR 23.0 avg 1,013 yds 64 pr 11.7 avg 750 yds
Info: Its rare that a defender can not only be the starting cornerback at age 25, but also help his team garner 1,763 yards on the ground through returns. Eric Allen utilized his best asset, speed, in the 1990 season as he was right up there with the other big names in returning kicks and punts. However Allens amazing cornerbacking skills were one of the reasons that Philadelphias defense managed to help pull its team all the way through the big game.

        Eagles Player Letdowns
        -------------------------------------------------------------
        1. - SS Andre Waters 61 Tak 1 Loss 1 Sack 1 FF 1 FR 5 Deflect 4 Interceptions
Info: The stat line for Andre Waters wouldve read as a solid year for any other safety, other than Andre Waters. Waters has set the bar high for himself despite his age, and thusly this year appeared as a large letdown. Waters mere 61 tackles was actually half of the total expected tackles that Philadelphia Fans were hoping to see him produce. He also proved to be more of a liability against the pass this season than expected defensively. Hopefully this was just an off year and Andre Waters can pick his game back up in 1991 to prove that he deserves to be named with the big-dogs at the Saftey position.

        2. - DT Clyde Simmons 55 Tak 7 Loss 3 Sack 1 FR 2 Deflect
Info: Clyde Simmons did not have a great year in terms of sacks. The youngster was expected to be an anchor at the defensive tackle position, and was quickly being regarded around the league as one of the best defensive tackles. However a 3 sack year for Simmons left many people biting there tongues on that thought as he did not give the output that Philadelphia Fans have come to expect.

        3. - K Roger Ruzek 28 of 43 fg 65% - 1 blk 33 of 33 xp 100%
Info: Ruzek was one of many kickers to disappoint this year with his sub-70% field goal percentage. An awful 65% year nearly cost the Eagles many games during the season. In few misses in the Super Bowl couldve just as easily seen the victory go to Houston rather than Philadelphia.

        Eagles Review
        -----------------------------------------------------
Review: What else can be said when you win the Super Bowl? Nothing. The Super Bowl is the reason that these players play the game, and it makes you the team to beat. So the Philadelphia Eagles will go into the 1991 season with a monkey off their backs after Randall Cunningham and company marched through the playoffs. With some young talent that just got a year under there belt offensively in wide receivers Calvin Williams and Fred Barnett, were fully expecting Randall Cunningham to have an even better season next year. The Eagles are without a doubt the team to beat. If they can fix a few lackluster defensive performances this year in the off-season through conditioning and the draft, then the Eagles could be a powerhouse for years to come, baring a sudden change.

          Atlanta Falcons Year Report
          ================================================== =
          Coach: Jerry Glanville
          Yrs: 6
          Season Record: 5-11
          Overall Record: 37-43 (.463)
Status: Jerry Glanville had the luxury of coaching the Houston Oilers for 4 full seasons. In those seasons he took them from 5-11 to 9-6, followed by a 10-6 and 9-7 seasons. However he found himself on the market in the 1989 off-season and took the job in Atlanta. That was the good news for the Falcons, that they got a winning coach on their side. The bad news is that he churned out another 5-11 year. However if its any consolation it was done minus their starting quarterback, and its just how he started in Houston so the Falcons may be in for some improvement in the next couple seasons. Glanville could very well bring this Falcons team to a respectable record. However fans are antsy and only time will tell.

          Falcons Individual Player Statistics
          -----------------------------------------------------------------------

          Falcons Team MVP
          --------------------------------------------------------
          LB Jessie Tuggle

          Falcons Player Standouts
          ---------------------------------------------------------------
          1. - LB Jessie Tuggle 118 Tak 17 Loss 12 Sack 4 FF 2 FR 15 Deflect 2 Int
Info: There is nowhere on the field that Jessie Tuggle can not produce. Whether hes leading the Falcons in tackles with an outstanding 118 performance, or hes tying up with safties for the team lead in deflections, Tuggle is the seminole defensive player. However probably the most important leading category for Jessie Tuggle was his sack mark as he led Atlanta with a solid 12 sack year. Tuggle has always been critiscised for being severely undersized to play the middle linebacker position. However he continues to disprove those critics season after season and hes going nowhere but up.

          2. - [b]HB Steve Broussard 316 Att 3.7 Avg 1,189 Yds 7 TD 3 Fum 50 Rec 352 Yds 4 TD[/ b]
Info: When Steve Broussard was deemed the starting job for Atlanta as a rookie, Falcon fans werent expecting much from their run game. However little did they know that Steve Broussard would have an amazing rookie campaign. Broussard combined for 11 touchdowns and 1,541 yards on the ground and air this year. He was one of only two seemingly bright spots in Atlantas mediocre offensive attack. Broussard progressed greatly as the season went on, and Atlanta is eager to find out what he can do for them next year, with a healthy starting quarterback.

          3. - WR Andre Rison 72 Rec 15.3 Avg 1,108 Yds 8 TD 9 Drop
Info: Last year Andre Rison was selected by the Indianapolis Colts. In his rookie year he caught a respectable 52 catches for 820 yards, and 4 touchdowns. Then in the off-season he was dealt away and wounded up on Atlantas roster. Despite having a depleted quarterback position Andre Rison defeated the dreaded sophomore curse with a solid 1990 year. Rison led Falcon receivers in every statistical category. Andre is quickly becoming one of the better receivers in the league. However a large amount of drops may be cause for delay on that dubious destinction, however thats nothing that some practice and experience cant fix.

          Falcons Player Letdowns
          -------------------------------------------------------------
          1. - QB Chris Miller 130 of 228 Att 1,413 Yds 57% - 8 TD 8 Int 72.5 Rat
Info: The Atlanta Falcons were expecting 1990 to be the breakout party year for quarterback Chris Miller. With three years under his belt and a steady development of positive progression Miller was going to be the focal point of the Falcons offense. However after a few rather average games early in the season, Miller was knocked out for the rest of the year with an injury. The Falcons were severely letdown and had to watch the likes of backup Scott Campbell lead their passing attack for the remainder of the season.

          2. - WR Shawn Collins 45 Rec 10.3 Avg 467 Yds 0 TD 4 Drop
Info: Shawn Collins took a step backwards in his sophomore attempt in 1990. In 1989 Collins finished with 58 catches for 862 yards and 3 touchdowns. This season he had 13 less catches and nearly half the total yards, with no touchdowns at all and a 4.5 yard per catch average reduction. Those are definitely not the kind of numbers that the Falcons coaching squad was expecting from this youngster. Hopefully he can pick it up before he finds himself out of a job.

          3. - OL Mike Kenn 31 Pancakes 7 Sacks Allowed
Info: The 34 year old veteran may be starting to loose some steam. A very respected offensive linemen had a rather average season for the Falcons. He contributed 7 sacks allowed to the 48 total allowed by the Falcons entire offensive line. In the meantime he struck the middle of the road with 31 pancakes. The Falcons will be hard pressed to consider finding Kenns eventual replacement in the next season or so, as he is not getting any younger.

          Falcons Review
          -----------------------------------------------------
Review: The Atlanta Falcons could be a surprise team next season. They managed to pull out 5 victories this year without their starting quarterback in the majority of the mix. They also had a rookie starting at the runningback, and #1 wide receiver slots. With the experience they gathered, and their natural talent, there is no doubt that Atlanta has all the potential in the world to become a playoff-caliber team. With their defensive stars like middle linebacker, Jessie Tuggle, and cornerback Deion Sanders, theres no telling how far they can go. However the window of opportunity is closing fast, and theyll need to act quickly if they want to achieve these goals.

            49ers Falcons Year Report
            ================================================== =
            Coach: George Seifert
            Yrs: 2
            Season Record: 10-6
            Overall Record: 24-8 (.750)
Status: The problem with George Seifert is that he set the bar high for himself in his first ever year as a head coach. George Seifert took the head coaching job for the San Francisco 49ers over in 1989, and what did he do? Well he took them all the way to a Super Bowl victory. That is a hard task to follow up, but the 49ers were prepared to do that for the most part. Seiferts coaching is a big factor in the capability of San Franciscos star players. Hes bringing a unique offensive style to the forefront on this team, that seems to be befuddling defenses around the league. Seifert definitely has many years left with San Francisco.

            49ers Team MVP
            --------------------------------------------------------
            FS Ronnie Lott

            49ers Player Standouts
            ---------------------------------------------------------------
            1. - FS Ronnie Lott 132 Tak 9 Loss 8 Sack 5 FR 11 Deflect 4 Int
Info: Ronnie Lott was not only the 49ers team MVP, but he also took home the Defensive Back of the Year award, and it was well deserved. Lott led the 49ers by a large margin in tackles with 132. While at the same time tying Pierce Holt for the lead in sacks with an outstanding 8 sacks. Lotts amazing athletic ability and ferociousness has gone unmatched in the NFL, and there is a reason hes considered the best safety in the league, and potentially one of the best of all time. At 31 years old hes still kicking strong, and should be for a few more seasons.

            2. - [b]HB Roger Craig 323 Att 3.8 Avg 1,234 Yds 11 TD 6 Fum 47 Rec 504 Yds 2 TD[/ b]
Info: Roger Craig picked up from last years slightly lower outcome.. In 1989 Roger Craig accounted for 7 total touchdowns, and this year he nearly doubled it with 13 total. His 1,738 combined yards were also a 300+ improvement over last season. Theres no doubt that Roger Craig can get it done, but at 30, going on 31 years old many were wondering if last season was a sign of his upcoming downfall. However Craig proved them wrong by putting out a better season rivaling his all-time best in 1988.

            3. - LOLB Bill Romanowski 105 Tak 12 Loss 7 Sack 5 FF 2 FR 13 Deflect 2 Int
Info: This 24 year old outside linebacker really pulled out the stops this season for the 49ers. Probably the second best player behind Bill Romanowski on the 49ers defense this season, was this unsung linebacker. Romanowski had 105 tackles and 7 sacks. He also proved his ability to defend the pass with 13 deflections, just 3 shy of the team lead by cornerback Darryl Pollard. However the most important contribution Romanowski made in 1990 was picking up his ability mid-season when the 49ers were left without Charles Haley opposite him. With the injury to Charles Haley Bill picked up his game when needed, and was a large part of the 49ers success in 1990.

            49ers Player Letdowns
            -------------------------------------------------------------
            1. - QB Steve Young 126 of 204 Att 51% - 1,150 Yds 6 TD 7 Int 72.5 Rat
Info: The 49ers werent happy when Joe Montana went down late in the regular season with a year ending injury. However they had solice in the fact that their backup was quarterback Steve Young. Young had filled in for Montana in 1987 and threw 10 touchdowns without a single interception in only 37 passes! Then in 1988 he had 3 tds with 3 ints, and then last season he had 8 touchdowns with only 3 interceptions. So there was no fear in 49er fans eyes as they continued on with the year without their star quarterbackthat is until Steve started to Play. In the final 4 games of the year that Steve played the 49ers went 2-2 with losses to the Redskins and Patriots. Steve Young showed a surprising lack of efficiency throughout those games as he tossed 6 touchdowns to 7 interceptions. Then the 49ers entered the playoffs and much to their surprise the 49ers played a horrible game. A huge hole in the offensive line caused Steve Young to not only throw numerous interceptions, but watch his team get stomped by the Green Bay Packers in the wild card round.

            2. - WR Jerry Rice 72 Rec 12.3 Avg 888 Yds 10 TD 7 Drop
Info: When you catch 66 touchdowns in only 5 years as a wide receiver, including 22 in a single season, youre regarded as the best receiver in the NFL period. However if you follow up a 17 touchdown year with a mere 888 yards then people start to wonder. Jerry Rice had the catches, and he even had, for any other receiver, a solid touchdown total on the season. But his 888 yards is the lowest of his career, and his 12.3 yard per catch average was 4.6 yards less than his career low!

            3. - LG Guy McIntyre 29 Pancakes 6 Sacks Allowed
Info: 1990 was by no means a horrid year for San Franciso 49ers left guard, Guy McIntyre. It was however, average. McIntyre went to the Pro Bowl last season for one of the better years had by a lineman in ages, and then followed it up with a mediocre 1990 performance. McIntyre was outshadowed by 3 of his own teammates on the offensive line in Bubba Paris, Jesse Sapolu, and Harris Barton. The only true starter that critics believed McIntyre beat out was Steve Wallace, who was hurt at times.

            49ers Review
            -----------------------------------------------------
Review: The San Francisco 49ers played one of the best 3/4ths of a season in recent memory. With Joe Montana kicking on all cyclinders on pace for a 30+ touchdown year with just over 3,000 yards planned. However a quick injury to your start quarterback, as well as your star defensive linebacker, Charles Haley, and things can take a change for the worse. With a 2-2 regular season finish, and a horrible playoff performance on both sides of the ball, and the 49ers have a forgettable end to a year that they just didnt work hard all the way through. However next year is another season, and with George Seifert at the helm, a healthy Joe Montana and Charles Haley, the 49ers should find themselves back ontop. Theyre future is bright as they have a few youngsters that showed promise such as tight end Brent Jones racking in a 48 catches 5 touchdown year, and linebacker Bil Romanowski dominating on defense.

              Giants Year Report
              ================================================== =
              Coach: Bill Parcells
              Yrs: 8
              Season Record: 9-7
              Overall Record: 73-53 (.579)
Status: Bill Parcells has now coached his 8th season with the New York Giants. IN those years he has managed to lead the Giants to glory in the 1986 season as they won the Super Bowl. However things are starting to shake up in New York. The Giants finished this year with a disappointing 9-7 record, a 3 win drop form the previous year. Unfortunately for the Giants the Eagles 13-3 and even the Redskins 9-7, were ranked over them this season. Bill Parcells final year just finished on his contract. Itll be interesting to see if he continues to coach the Giants or not. He has the luxury of a leading the team to a Super Bowl to dangle before the front office faces, but that was 4 years ago.

              LB Lawrence Taylor

              Giants Player Standouts
              ---------------------------------------------------------------
              1. - HB Ottis Anderson 348 Att 4.0 Avg 1,406 Yds 8 TD 4 Fum -26 Rec 251 Yds 2 TD
Info: Ottis Anderson had his best season yardage wise since his rookie year in 1979 with the St. Louis Rams. The 33 year old runningback showed the youngsters how to get it done in 1990 with a 1,406 yard, 8 touchdown season. Anderson was a large reason for the Giants second-half season resurgence that gave them a potential, but failed, shot at the playoffs. In this one season Ottis Anderson ran for more yards than he had his whole Giant career from 1986-1989 (1,318). It appears this bruising runningback may have found his second wind.

              2. - [b]ROLB Lawrence Taylor 144 Tak 12 Loss 9 Sack 5 FF 2 FR 20 Deflect 1 Int[/ b]
Info: When you lead your team in tackles, sacks, forced fumbles, and deflections, then you know youre good. Theres no doubting that Lawrence Taylor is one of the all-time best at his position with his furious playing. However at 31 years old many people are expecting him to start dropping off in terms of playing ability. But in 1990 LT proved all the critics wrong with an outstanding 144 tackles that led the league. Taylor vastly improved his pass protection ability in 1990 when he deflected 20 passes, a part of his game that was lacking previously.

              3. - C Bart Oates 62 Pancakes 6 Sacks Allowed
Info: The 27 year old center, Bart Oates, is just coming into his prime with the 1990 season completed. Oates had a solid 62 pancakes with only 6 sacks allowed all year. Oates has now established himself as one of the leagues top centers. There is a reason Bart Oates was the offensive lineman that received the most votes in the Pro Bowl, thats because hes just that good.

              4. WR Mark Ingram 51 Rec 14.0 Avg 717 Yds 6 TD 9 Drop
Info: The New York Giants seem to lack a true star wide receiver, but that has not forced the team to not work with what they have. Young 25 year old Mark Ingram had his first breakout year with the New York Giants this season. Catching more passes then his first 3 seasons combined (32 total) and leading the Giants in Yards received, and touchdowns caught! Ingram could finally be getting ready to establish himself and give New York the receiving threat they require. Next season will be a big year for him to prove that.

              Giants Player Letdowns
              -------------------------------------------------------------
              1. - HB Rodney Hampton 133 Att 2.8 Avg 384 Yds 4 TD 1 Fum
Info: The New York Giants drafted Rodney Hampton to be the eventual replacement for aging Ottis Anderson. However with Andersons explosive season, and Hamptons fizzle, things may change. Hampton had 133 attempts to get it right, but with a 2.8 average the Giants were left wanting more. Hampton did managed to collect 4 touchdowns from short distance, but his performance was not what New York fans were hoping out of the kid in 1990.

              2. - CB Mark Collins 43 Tak 1 Loss 1 FF 1 FR 14 Deflect
Info: All other numbers for Mark Collins were decidedly satisfying in the 1990 season except a large glaring 0 in the interception column. The New York Giants suffered in the interception department in 1990 and it costed them some key games. However Mark Collins lack of contribution was the biggest let down surprise of the year for the defense.

              3. - DT Erik Howard 36 Tak 3 Loss 2 Sack 2 FF 1 FR 3 Deflect
Info: Definitely a bad season for defensive tackle Erik Howard. Howard was rated the best of all the Giants defensive tackles and he churned out a horrendous 2 sack year. Howard will need to step it up if the Giants are going to have faith in him.

              Giants Review
              -----------------------------------------------------
Review: The New York Giants finished the year just short of a potential wild card spot. With a 1-4 start in the first 5 weeks things werent looking good at all. However after a bye week the Giants came storming back and finished the year 8-3, but it still wasnt enough. 4 of the Giants 7 losses were 3 points or less, this should indicate that the Giants still have the potential to be the top tier team that they have been in previous recent seasons. However an aging and accuracy decreasing Phil Simms isnt helping matters in the passing front. Whether or not backup Jeff Hostetler can take over is a large question looming over the Giants offense. Bill Parcells has a good chance of coming back to New York, although many teams are salivating at the thought of aquiring him in the off-season. With a couple free agent pickups at some lacking positions, the Giants could easily skyrocket back up to contention, the only question is, will they help themselves?

                Overall Record: 6-10 (.375)
Status: Well Bruce Coslets first season as a head coach in the NFL was rather uneventfull. The youngster signed a 4 year deal to head coach the Jets, but hell definitely have to pick things up in the future if he wants to see those 4 years completed. With a 6-10 outcome, scraping the bottom of their divison along with the Miami Dolphins, the Jets really lost control. Next year however Coslet should be able to redeem himself with a much better year.

                Jets Player Standouts
                ---------------------------------------------------------------
                1. - DE Jeff Lageman 50 Tak 10 Loss 9 Sack 2 FF 1 FR 4 Deflect
Info: Jeff Lageman surprised many of his fellow Jet teammates at the young age of 23 years old. This right end popped onto the scene teaming up with Marvin Washington as one of the more fearful defensive duos in the league. Lageman managed to rack up 9 total sacks this season, tying Marvin Washington for the team lead. He also had the most tackles of any of the defensive lineman with 50. Lageman managed to take home the teams MVP award in 1990, due to some lackluster performances and injuries, but it is still a solid victory for the young defensive end that may have a bright future.

                2. - SS Brian Washington 84 Tak 2 Loss 1 Sack 3 FF 1 FR 8 Deflect 6 Int
Info: For a strong safety, Washington really surprised opposing offenses with his pass protection ability. Washington accounted for 8 deflections, but more astonishingly led the team in interceptions with 6 outstanding grabs throughout the regular season. Washington was second on the team in tackles with 84 and led the team in forced fumbles. With his 9 total turnovers alone, Washington proved to be the turnover machine on defense that helped keep New York in many of their games that wouldve otherwise been a lost cause.

                3. - HB Blair Thomas 116 Att 4.6 Avg 540 Yds 6 TD 1 Fum 15 Rec 109 Yds
Info: Blair Thomas was the rookie picked up by the Jets earlier this season. Blair Thomas challenged and overtook Freeman McNeil for the starting runningback position in the pre-season. However nobody was expecting him to explode the way he did. Thomas, in the first four games of the season, managed to rush for 540 yards on only 116 attempts, giving him a top notch 4.6 yard per carry average. He also managed to stumble into the endzone 6 separate times, while only fumbling once during his entire tenure. However an injury ended up knocking Blair Thomas out for the rest of the season, forcing McNeil into the situation. Freeman managed to grab 804 yards on the ground, but his 3.3 yard per carry average was a far cry from Thomas 4.6, and his 3 touchdowns in 12 games hardly matched Thomas 6 in 4.

                Jets Player Letdowns
                -------------------------------------------------------------
                1. - QB Ken OBrien 276 of 479 att 57% - 3,003 Yds 16 TD 30 Int 61.2 Rat
Info: Interceptions are certainly no stranger to Ken OBrien, but this year they seemed to flock to him like birds. OBrien threw a league high 30 interceptions as the Jets starter. Surprisingly enough Closet always stuck with his guy and never pulled OBrien out of the game. His 3,003 yards were up to par, but his 57% completion rate left a bitter taste in New York Jets collective mouthes. The Jets passing game suffered greatly in 1990, and OBrien will have to certainl pull things together if he wants to remain in New York come the end of his contract in the 1992 off-season.

                2. - HB Freeman McNeil 242 Att 3.3 Avg 804 Yds 3 TD 3 Fum 16 Rec 125 Yds
Info: While Blair Thomas was the future for the Jets, Freeman McNeil is the past. However that was certainly a glorious past to have. The Jets took no quams in giving the job back to Freeman McNeil once Blair Thomas went down with an injury. And his 804 yards was by no means a horrible accomplishment. But for a runningback that in his 9 NFL years has never averaged less than 4 yards per carry to come out and pull a 3.3 year, is not good.

                3. - MLB Kyle Clifton 83 Tak 3 Loss 1 FF 1 FR 9 Deflect 1 Int
Info: Whether it was the nagging injuries or just the overall deflation of desire by the Jets lack of wins, Kyle Clifton did not exactly have a great year. The linebacker is normally known for getting well over a hundred tackles in a season, however he clocked in at only 83 tackles in 1990. He also showed no rushing ability by not obtaining a single sack on the entire season. The only semblance of his normal athletic ability was the 9 deflections that he had against the pass. Hopefully this isnt a sign of things to come for New York as Clifton is turning 29 soon.

                Jets Review
                -----------------------------------------------------
Review: The New York Jets have lots of young potential on their team. Whether its rookie Blair Thomas coming back healthy to pound through defenses in 91. Or whether Terance Mathis and Rob Moore will progress even more underneath Al Toons guidance during the off-season, giving Ken OBrien a greater chance at success. The Jets also have young talent including their team MVP, on defense. Defensive ends Jeff Lageman and Marvin Washington combined for 18 sacks and are only 23 and 25 years old, respectively. Linebackers Joe Kelly and Joe Mott have both still not hit their primes, and the defensive backfield has 25 and 24 year old James Hasty and Tony Stargell pulling down passes. If Bruce Coslet has the gall to slap this team together and discipline them in 1991, they could very well be a surprise team in the AFC.

                  Lions Year Report
                  ================================================== =
                  Coach: Wayne Fontes

                  Season Record: 11-5
                  Overall Record: 20-17 (.541)
Status: Wayne Fontes just finished up his 3rd season with the Detroit Lions as their head coach. After a 5 game 2-3 record in 1988 taking over for the Lions former head coach, Darryl Rogers. Then he had his first full season last year where the Lions bounced up to a 7-9 record, but still fell short of the playoffs. Fast forward to 1990 and the Detroit Lions were one of the biggest surprises in 1990 as they led their division, inching out with 1 more division victory over the same record, 11-5 Packers. If this trend of progressive success continues for Detroit they could easily find themselves shaking things up in the NFC long term.

                  Lions Player Standouts
                  ---------------------------------------------------------------
                  1. - HB – Barry Sanders – 345 Att – 4.6 Avg – 1,621 Yds – 9 TD – 7 Fum – 29 Rec – 286 Yds – 1 TD
Info: Last year Barry Sanders surprised the league with his playing ability in a rookie season. He carried 280 times for an outstanding 5.2 yards per carry average, including an amazing 14 touchdown performance. In 1990 he may have dropped in the average, but was still a top notch 4.6 yards per carry. He surpassed himself with a 1,621 yard year, and had 9 touchdowns under his belt, despite missing two games due to injury. Sanders has now had two of the most productive years by a runningback ever, and this young 23 year old runningback should sail through and bring the Lions to contention year after year. Sanders was the sole offensive reason for Detroit’s success in 1990.

                  2. - C – Kevin Glover – 42 Pancakes – 2 Sacks Allowed
Info: Kevin Glover had an amazing 1990 season. Glover was second on the Lions with 42 pancakes, only to Harvey Salem (60). However with those 42 pancakes he was only responsible for allowing 2 sacks all season long. Without a doubt Kevin Glover shot himself to a different level in 1990 and was a large reason for the overall success Barry Sanders had in 1990. Harvey Salem also produced on the offensive line, but the other three left much to be desired. Hopefully the Lions line can improve in the future to help give Sanders a shot.

                  3. - ROLB – Michael Cofer – 72 Tak – 15 Loss – 11 Sack – 1 FF – 1 FR – 5 Deflect – 3 Int
Info: Michael Cofer was 3rd on the team in tackles only to Dennis Gibson (78), and Bennie Blades (75), with his 72 tackle year. However what he did lead the team in was in sacks with a solid 11 sack year. Cofer showed a surprising ability to get into the backfield and find the quarterback in 1990 in a situation that Detroit is not normally known for, blitzing. The other surprise in Cofer’s game was his pass protection as he had 3 interceptions in the regular season, just one less then the team’s lead, cornerback Bruce McNorton.

                  1. - MLB – Chris Spielman – 67 Tak – 11 Loss – 5 Sack – 2 FF – 1 FR – 4 Deflect – 1 Int – 1 TD
Info: The Detroit Lions had high expectations for Chris Spielman in 1990, and deservedly so. Before Spielman suffered a season ending injury in week 5 of the regular season he was leading the NFL in tackles with 67. He was well on his way to 100+ tackles in 1990, and even had 5 sacks looking to eclipse double digits if things continued. However they did not, letting down the Lions defense for the remainder of the season.

                  2. - QB – Rodney Peete – 221 of 421 att – 52% - 2,356 Yds – 16 TD – 19 Int – 63 Rat
Info: Rodney Peete had a mediocre rookie campaign in 1989, and Detroit was hoping he would progress in 1990 and become the quarterback that they projected he’d be when the Lions drafted him. The only plus that Detroit can say about 1990 for Peete was that he didn’t get injured, however statistically he played almost indentically to his rookie year. IN both he had only a 52% completion rate, and more interceptions that touchdowns. In 8 more games he only had 900 more passing yards, with a diminutive 5.5 yards per attempt Rodney Peete led one of the least inspiring passing games in the league.

                  3. - K – Eddie Murray – 39 of 46 FG – 84% - 31 of 31 XP – 100%
Info: Okay so Murray had a great 1990 year knocking in 39 field goals and only missing 5 all season long. However the only upsetting point is just that, his 84% field goal accuracy was a let down from 1989’s stellar 95.2% Granted in 1989 Murray only kicked 20 of 21.

                  Lions Review
                  -----------------------------------------------------
Review: The Detroit Lions could start becoming legitamite contenders in the playoffs if they can improve their passing game in 1991. They’ve found a gem of a runningback in Barry Sanders and he’ll easily continue to play successfully in the league. However Rodney Peete once again had a ho-hum year, which in turn led to lackluster performances by Richard Johnson, Robert Clark, and youngster Willie Green. The Lions defense suffered a key loss in 1990 with the season ending injury to Chris Spielman early on, but they managed to still have some standouts and perform well enough to bring Detroit an 11-5 outcome. If Wayne Fontes can influence management to make the right moves in the off-season Detroit could find success. One of the biggest influences may be the Detroit fans and their quarterback situation, as fans are clamoring for the #1 overall pick, Andre Ware, to get his shot at showing what he can do. Ware did not take a single snap in 1990, with backup Erik Kramer throwing 21 of 35 for 224 yards, 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions in the one game that Rodney Peete did not play in.

                    Oilers Year Report
                    ================================================== =
                    Coach: Jack Pardee
                    Yrs: 7
                    Season Record: 12-4
                    Overall Record: 56-50(.528)
Status: Jack Pardee landed in a solid situation when he decided to take the step back into the head coaching business. He started with the Chicago Bears from 1975-1977 with lackluster results, and followed it with 3 other seasons in Washington, where he went up then down, and left. Now hes giving it another shot with the Oilers, a team bound for glory, and as a result the Houston Oilers went all the way the Super Bowl game and down the final seconds. While a loss may seem hard theres no doubting Pardees importance in the outstanding year that Houston had, and he just earned much respect from the local fans.

                    ---------------------------------------------------------------
                    1. - QB Warren Moon 338 of 555 att 60% - 4,034 yds 32td 16 int 90.3 rat
Info: There was a reason Warren Moon took home the NFL MVP award in 1990, and it was because of his exemplary performance. Warren Moon led all quarterbacks with 555 attempts and 4,034 yards for 32 touchdowns. The Houston Oilers run and shoot offense shredded defenses around the league as Moon picked his targets out a sea of capable receiver stars. Moons 32 touchdowns are a career high for the 34 year old after last years career high 23. His 4,034 yards mark the first time in his career that he has surpassed that mark, as well as the 300 completion mark and the 500 attempt mark. And to think Warren Moon is getting his best production at the age that most quarterbacks start to contemplate retirement.

                    2. - [b]WR Drew Hill 68 Rec 14.2 Avg 972 Yds 12 TD 7 Drop [/ b]
Info: Drew Hill slightly pulled out of the crowd of Houston Oiler receivers in one key statistic, touchdowns. Hill soared above all other Oilers with 12 receiving touchdowns, not only leading the team, but marking a personal career high beating 1988s 10. He also caught the 2nd most pass of his solid career and earned his 2nd Pro Bowl birth (1988).

                    3. - CB Patrick Allen 47 Tak 1 FF 8 Deflect 5 Int
Info: For a 3rd string nickel cornerback Patrick Allen had a great 1990 campaign. The 28 year old corner has never really been given the chance to shine, but with youngster Cris Dishman breathing down his neck he stepped up his game, eventually challenging Dishman for that #2 spot as they split time. His 5 interceptions led the team, and his 47 tackles were just 4 short of the cornerback lead by Richard Johnson.

                    Oilers Player Letdowns
                    -------------------------------------------------------------
                    1. - WR Tony Jones 8 Rec 11.3 Avg 91 Yds 1 TD 1 Drop
Info: Rookie Tony Jones wasnt expected to dethrone Drew Hill or Haywood Jeffries, but was at leats supposed to shake things up between Ernest Givens and Curtis Duncan, however Jones impact was barely noticeable. The wide receiver average a catch per game and only scored once all season in which Moon threw a career high 32 touchdowns.

                    2. - MLB Scott Kozak 36 Tak 1 Loss 1 Deflect
Info: When Johnny Meads went down with an injury at the middle linebacker spot many Houston fans werent worried because Scott Kozak has always been advertised as a capable player behind him, however that wasnt very evident during his tenure at the starting spot. Kozak only managed 36 tackles and a deflection to his name, not showing any ability outside of running into a few players here and there.

                    3. - MLB Johnny Meads 30 Tak 3 Loss 2 Deflect
Info: Johnny Meads wasnt playing up to par before he got hurt. The Oilers expected much better, and diverse, numbers from the 29 year old verteran middle linebacker. Unfortunatly Meads will have to wait next year, where he will challenge an also inadequate Scott Kozak for his starting job.

                    Oilers Review
                    -----------------------------------------------------
Review: The Houston Oilers are as good as a team can get being #2. They soared through the regular season with only 4 losses as one of the most highly touted offensive powerhouses in NFL history, let alone the league. With 32 touchdowns in the air and a MVP trophy under Warren Moons arm the Oilers looked poised for Super Bowl glory. They did manage to get there, albeit through struggling offensively, but it came down to a few last seconds that sealed their fate as the Super Bowl losers. In 1991 the Oilers are expected to be right back in the thick of things, with a solid young defense that is proving itself, and an amazing passing offense they are going to be hard to stop again. Hopefully this year Warren Moon doesnt use up his tank early in the year and still leaves some gas for the big game.

                      Packers Year Report
                      ================================================== =
                      Coach: Lindy Infante
                      Yrs: 3
                      Season Record: 11-5
                      Overall Record: 25-23 (.521)
Status: Lindy Infante has greatly improved over each year that hes been a head coach. Infante was given his first shot at the starting job in 1988 for the Packers where he lept and fell off the deep end with a 4-12 record. However in 1989 he turned that completely arouned into a solid 10-6 season, but just fell short of the playoffs. Now Green Bay returns in 1990 1 victory better then 1989, and it was enough to catapult them into the playoffs where they had a solid showing knocking out the 49ers in the first round. Infante has one season left on his contract, so baring a horrendous 1991 season he can fully expect to be re-signed with Green Bay.

                      Packers Player Standouts
                      ---------------------------------------------------------------
                      1. - LOLB Tim Harris 104 Tak 9 Loss 10 Sack 7 FF 1 FR 13 Deflect
Info: Tim Harris certainly surprised Green Bay fans with his amazing play in 1990. Harris outshined Brian Noble despite having 14 less tackles and finishing with 104, 2nd on the team. He did however shine by showing his pass rushing ability with a 10 sack year that led the Packers. He also had an outstanding 7 forced fumbles that showed how he has one of the best noses for the football in the league. Harris easily sailed into the pro bowl with his outstanding year, and garnered himself the teams MVP award.

                      2. - [b]FS Mark Murphy 76 Tak 7 Loss 7 Sack 3 FF 3 FR 10 Deflect 7 Int [/ b]
Info: Despite getting hurt during the regular season Mark Murphy had an outstanding 1990 output. He shined above most NFL defensivebacks despite being 32 years old. The veteran showed he still had what it took by taking down 76 ball carriers including a surprising 7 sacks, which is definitely a high number for a safety. He also showed that he can still cover the pass by not only deflecting 10 passes but leading the Packers, and safties in interceptions with a solid 7. If Murphy can recover quickly in the off-season and get back to training soon he should be back in top form for next season, despite being 33 years old.

                      3. - HB Keith Woodside 243 att 3.1 avg 765 yds 4 TD 3 Fum 47 Rec 292 Yds 3 TD
Info: Woodside gets this award for just not being horrible during his opportunity this year. The Green Bay Pacekrs are in runningback hell at the moment with no standout starter, however they let 3rd year back Keith Woodside carry the bulk of the load from Brent Fullwood and Darrell Thompson in an attempt to weed out a star in the tumbles of mediocrity. Woodside averaged a low 3.1 yards per carry with 765 total yards on the ground, but in the end his season was better than expected in that he was servicable. His 1,057 yards and 7 touchdown total was enough to keep him in the starting spot for the majority of the season, however Green Bay still needs to find a more capable runningback.

                      Packers Player Letdowns
                      -------------------------------------------------------------
                      1. - HB Brent Fullwood 116 Att 2.8 Avg 334 Yds 3 TD 1 FUM 13 Rec 116 Yds 1 TD
Info: During the regular season Brent Fullwood battled it out with Keith Woodside for the starting spot after an 800+ yard 5 touchdown rushing game in 1989. However he couldnt beat out Woodside with his horrible 2.8 yards per carry average. The only positive for Fullwood was when Woodside got hurt at the end of the regular season, allowing him to play in the playoffs. Where Fullwood played decently during his short tenure as the teams full starter.

                      2. - LT Tony Mandarich 37 Pancakes 10 Sacks Allowed
Info: The youngster Mandarich was picked up to be the future of the Packers offensive line. However with double digit sacks allowed and a sub-40 pancakes total accompanying it let Green Bay down in their expectations.

                      3. - WR Sterling Sharpe 71 Rec 11.8 Avg 839 Yds 6 TD 5 Drop
Info: The Packers passing game left much to be desired considering that Sterling Sharpes numbers led the Packers in every single receiving category. In 1989, his sophomore season, Sharpe surprised the league with a 90 catch, 1,423 yard, 12 touchdown performance that had many critics hailing him as the next Steve Largent. However in 1990 he recessed by 19 catches, just under 600 yards, and 6 touchdowns. Sharpe and the Packers passing game will need to get a kick in the future years if they want to recognize their full potential.

                      Packers Review
                      -----------------------------------------------------
Review: The Green Bay Packers had a solid 1990 season showing that last year was no fluke with their 10-6 season being complimented by this years 11-5. Infantes coaching has brought the team to a higher level that they havent felt in years, and have nowhere else to go but up. With the defense coming together this year with the surprises of Tim Harris and the continued success of aging veterans like Mark Murphy. However the Packers offense struggled with Don Majkowski not showing the best of passing games to young star, Sterling Sharpe. They still suffer at the runningback spot, and will definitely need to tweak a few offensive weapons in the off-season. But with that said, to have the lacksidasical offense that they had in 1990, and still be able to produce an 11-5 year proves just how much potential these Green Bay Packers really have.

Status: Rod Rust got his first shot at being a head coach in 1990 when he took the reigns for the New England Patriots. Little did fans expect that Rust would come out of the gates blazing. The Patriots surprised everybody in the league by finishing the season with an outstanding 12-4 record. They led their division by 1 division victory over the vaunted Buffalo Bills. Rust was only given a 1 year contract in New England, but with the success he obtained this year, going into the playoffs, theres o doubt that New England will be hard-pressed to sign him for a longer deal this off-season. A 6-game win streak after the Patriots Bye in week 3, really sparked the potential.

Info: If someone had said Marc Wilson was going to be one of the better quarterbacks in the league this year before the season, most people wouldve laughed. Well Wilson is laughing his way to the bank now as he pulled off a solid 1990 year that saw him take home the team MVP award. Wilson improved greatly during the season (82 ovr) and filled in very nicely for veteran quarterback, Steve Grogan. Wilson was never known as an amazing quarterback during his previous 9 on/off as the starter seasons for the Raiders. In fact only once did Wilson have more touchdowns than interceptions in 1987 where he had 12 touhdowns and 8 interceptions. Yet in his first chance to fully start in New England he exploded with a career high in every stat except interceptions. Wilson will however have to prove next year that this season was not a fluke and put up another valiant effort if he wants to be taken seriously as a top-tier quarterback.

                        2. - [b]WR Hart Lee Dykes 67 Rec 12.6 Avg 850 Yds 9 TD 2 Drop [/ b]
Info: 2nd Year wide receiver Hart Lee Dykes improved greatly on his rookie campaign numbers in 1990. Dykes caught 18 more passes for 55 more yards, but the most stunning figure is that he caught 9 touchdowns this season, tying Irving Fryar for the team lead. Dykes has slowly been emerging as a top-potential wide receiver, and the 24 year old proved that this season. If Dykes can remain as healthy as he has been after playing every game in 2 seasons, he could have a solid career ahead of him in the future.

                        3. - WR Irving Fryar 59 Rec 13.2 Avg 779 Yds 9 TD 8 Drop
Info: Irving Fryar has been a solid backup wide receiver for the Patriots in the past 6 years, but in 1990 he decided to finally step it up as the true #2 and prove that he can potentially be a starter in the future. Fryar posted career highs in all categories except yards per catch in 1990. He tied with Hart Lee Dykes for the team lead with 9 touchdowns. The only complaint Patriots players had this year was that Fryar let a couple too many passes go through his hands at key moments. Itll be interesting to see Fryar and Dykes battle it out next pre-season to figure out who will be the true #1 in New England.

                        Patriots Player Letdowns

                        1. - SS Roland James 44 Tak 2 Loss 1 Sack 1 FR 2 Deflect 2 Int
Info: Nothing screamed below average like strong safety, Roland James, 1990 season output. James had only 2 tackles more than the 3rd string cornerback in New England. The 31 year old veteran appears to be on the decline of his career as he also proved a liability in the passing game at some times during the season.

                        2. - K Jason Staurovsky 24 of 38 FG 63% - 31 of 31 XP 100%
Info: Staurovsky had a far cry 63% field goal completion rate in 1990 from his previous seasons 82.4%. Jason definitely was a big let down for New England, and missed some key field goals in the playoffs as well. Its disappointing that many of New Englands games had to come down to his inconsistent leg, but Patriot fans are weary and hoping that last season was a show of how good Jason truly is, and this season was just merely a bad year for the kicker.

                        3. - DT Tim Goad 39 Tak 1 Loss 2 Sack 1 FR 3 Deflect
Info: Tim Goad was one of the least productive starting defensive tackles in the NFL this season. Goad only produced a pitiful 2 sack season that mirrored the lack of intensity by his other fellow defensive linemen. The Patriots are going to need to do something about the defensive line in the future if they want their defense to be taken seriously.

                        Patriots Review
                        -----------------------------------------------------
Review: The New England Patriots surprised everybody, including their own, in 1990. Nobody was expecting this ho-hum team to blast onto the scene with a 12-4 division winning season and vault themselves to the playoffs. With the success of 1st time head coach, Rod Rust, quarterback Marc Wilson, and the defensive secondary, the Patriots really pulled out the stops. Whether they were smashing offensive players with their zoo of a linebacking corps, or having 3rd year John Stephens surprise on the ground, the Patriots proved that they are no slouches this season. Now they just need to prove that they can do it again in 1991. If the Patriots make a few key off-season moves, like a decent backup quarterback to Wilson, as Grogan has expressed interest in retiring, or maybe a defensive lineman that is capable of pumping up the Patriots defense, then they should be good in the coming years.

Status: Art Shell is entering his third year as the Los Angeles Raiders head coach. Shell took over 4 games into 1989 and helped the Raiders finish with a 7-5 record with him as the head coach. In 1990 however, injuries ensued as the Raiders lost not only Bo Jackson, but then Marcus Allen. Thusly the Raiders struggled in the beginning as they started off with a 1-4 record before putting it together and finishing 6-5. The depleted offense of the Raiders struggled all year to a 7-9 record that couldnt be avoided. Shell has shown glimmers of potential in his short tenure with the Raiders, and next season hes hoping to really shine in a full-healthy season coaching the Raiders. However if things continue this way, even if they may be aspects that are out of Shells hands, the fans of Los Angeles may force Shell out of the job.

                          Raiders Player Standouts
                          ---------------------------------------------------------------
                          1. - WR Willie Gault 80 Rec 13.0 Avg 1,044 Yds 5 TD 8 Drop
Info: Willie Gault was given his first true chance at being the teams #1 wide receiver when Mervyn Fernandez suffered a minor injury earlier in the season combined with the rookie Tim Brown breathing down his neck, and as a result Willie Gault put up career numbers at the catches and yards mark, with a touchdown total he hadnt reach since his days in Chicago. Gault was a rare offensive weapon in a battered Raiders team. With the utter lack of a running game due to injury the Raiders Jay Schroeder was forced to make a star out of one of his receivers, and in 1990 it was 30 year old Willie Gault. Gault also took home the team MVP award out of near default.

                          2. - LE Howie Long 51 Tak 9 Loss 8 Sack 2 Deflect
Info: Howie Long is now about to turn 31 years old. This veteran has poised himself as one of the greatest defensive linemen of all time. However many critics are expecting Long to begin his age-troubled downfall in his career. However in 1990 Long proved that age doesnt really matter, its all about ability. He tied for the team lead in sacks with Scott Davis at 8. He also led all of the Raiders defensive linemen in tackles.

                          3. - CB Terry McDaniel 46 Tak 1 Loss 1 FF 21 Deflect 6 Int
Info: Terry McDaniel really improved in 1990 and is now vaulting himself in the NFL as one of the better young cornerbacks in the league. McDaniel at age 25 managed to lead the Raiders in deflections by a wide margin (9) with his 21. He also tied with another youngster, 23 year old Garry Lewis, for the team lead in interceptions with 6 each. These two combined could make a bright future for Los Angeles pass defense.

                          Raiders Player Letdowns
                          -------------------------------------------------------------
                          1. - QB Jay Schroeder 270 of 467 att 57% - 2,640 yds 13 TD 21 Int 64.3 Rat
Info: Jay Schroeder let down the Raiders when they needed him most this season. With two injured runningbacks the Raiders offense was going to have to rely on the passing game at a greater rate, but Schroeder just couldnt deliver the goods. He had 8 more interceptions than touchdowns, something never done in his career. Although Schroeders let down was more forced, he definitely will need to improve, even if there is a running game next season, to remain Los Angeles starter. With backup Steve Beuerlein posting up 344 yards and 3 touchdowns with a 104.4 rating in his one start during the season, Schroeder may have more to worry about than he previously thought. That is, if the Raiders re-sign Beuerlein whos contract ended this season.

                          2. - HB Bo Jackson 86 Att 3.5 Avg 303 Yds 1 TD 1 Fum 10 Rec 58 Yds
Info: Even though Bo Jackson has had an injury problem during his NFL stint, he has shown an amazing athletic ability and potential that has Raider fans foaming at the mouth at the thought of him actually staying healthy. However once again Jackson fell to injury, this time season ending. The only difference between this year and previous? Was that during the time he was actually playing he played average. Jacksons 86 carries for 303 yards and a single touchdown are hardly the kind of numbers that Raider fans were expecting from this star athlete.

                          3. - HB Marcus Allen 42 Att 5.0 Avg 214 Yds 1 TD 1 Rec 5 Yds
Info: So Marcus Allen, the guy who ran for 1,759 yards and 14 combined touchdowns in 1985 with the Raiders took over for Bo Jacksonfor about two games. Allen, after openly complaining about not being given proper starting time, got his chance, and ran two games with it before he too was sidelined. Theres a curse in Los Angeles and its originating with the Raiders running back corps.

                          Raiders Review
                          -----------------------------------------------------
Review: The Los Angeles Raiders could easily make their way back to the top of their division. A few lackluster seasons that were riddled with key player injuries are no reason for Raider fans to fret. With the head coaching of a promising Art Shell, and the amazing potential and talent in the Raiders backfield theres no telling how far theyll get if the circumstances are right. With a few surprising young players like cornerbacks Terry McDaniel and Garry Lewis shoring up the defense theres nowhere else to go but up.

                            Rams Year Report
                            ================================================== =
                            Coach: John Robinson
                            Yrs: 8
                            Season Record: 7-9
                            Overall Record: 74-53 (.583)
Status: John Robinson has been coaching the Rams for 8 years at thso point, and theres a reason for that. Robinson has brought continued success to the franchise, leading them to the playoffs in 6 of those 8 years, only missing in 1987 and now in 1990. Robinson showed a lack of focus and concentration in 1990 when the Rams were sitting at 7-6 with a shot at the playoffs and proceeded to loose the final 3 games of the season to the Cardinals, Eagles, and Jets. Needing only 2 out of those 3 games to clinch a playoff birth. Robinson has a solid winning record in his career, but theres one thing he just cant seem to get his team to do, and thats get over the edge. He can get them so far, but then they fizzle out. Last season however was the best year for the Rams in ages as they went 11-5 and managed to garner two victories and make it to the NFC championship game. Robinson has proven he can get the team there, but its through his coaching that he needs to finally get the Rams to the big-game. With only one season left on his contract, he may find himself having to do that sooner then later.

Info: It is probably impossible for Kevin Greene to have had a better season than the one he had in 1990. The NFL thought the same thing as they easily handed over the Defensive Player of the Year award to Greene. Greenes 139 tackles led the league as he pounced his way into the Rams record books. Greene had an amazing 24 tackles for losses in 1990, and even proved his speed and ability to even protect the pass! Something that was previously thought of as a weak part of his game. Greene deflected a Rams high, beating out all defensivebacks, with 18 deflections as well.

                            2. - WR Willie Anderson 81 Rec 12.9 Avg 1,049 Yds 8 TD 3 Drop
Info: Willie Flipper Anderson managed to grab career highs in receptions and touchdowns in 1990 as he became the Rams leading receiver. After playing #2 to Henry Ellard in his previous 2-seasons, the 25 year old broke through in 1990 with his performance. Anderson earned himself his first Pro Bowl appearance as well. With the tough duo of Willie Anderson and Henry Ellard the Rams passing game should flourish.

                            3. - FB Buford McGee 68 Att 3.6 Avg 245 Yds 2 TD 51 Rec 380 Yds 4 TD 1 Drop
Info: Buford McGee had a great year in 1990 for a fullback. He managed to piece together a surprising 6 touchdown season as the unsung hero of Los Angeles 1990 offense. McGee was actually 3rd on the team in receptions behind Anderson and Ellard with a career high 51 receptions. McGee was the X-Factor that brought a new dimension to the Rams offense. Combined with his blocking ability to help Curt Warner along McGee become one of the most valuable players on the Rams team. The fans thought so too as they easily let McGee sail to his first Pro Bowl appearance.

                            1. - TE Pete Holohan 28 Rec 5.2 Avg 148 Yds 1 TD
Info: For Pete Holohan 1990 was a big disappointment. After having 51 catches for 510 yards in 1989 he was figured in as being another key contributor in the passing game. However his 1990 season was half of his previous season. Holohan definitely took a sudden hit in 1990 in terms of ability. He averaged a measly 5.2 yards per catch in his low 28 receptions.

                            2. - CB Darryl Henley 31 Tak 1 FR 10 Deflect 2 Int 54 KR 22.2 Avg 1200 Yds 59 PR 10.6 Avg - 626 Yds 1 TD
Info: Maybe it was the fact that Henley was eating up valuable stamina by returning both kicks and punts in 1990, but this year left much to be desired defensively from the 24 year old. Henley was the #2 corner, and was supposedly going to challenge Jerry Gray for the top cornerback spot. But with the effort he put in defensively in 1990 there was apparently no challenge for Jerry Gray, who easily beat him out. Henley may have had some shining moments, but overall was a disappointment in the pass defense this season.

                            3. - HB Cleveland Gary 79 Att 3.3 Avg 261 Yds 4 Fum 2 Rec 19 Yds
Info: For a kid thats supposed to be the next big thing at runningback Cleveland Gary has shown no promise. In his rookie season last year (1989) Gary had a 4.4 yard per carry average on a mere 37 carries. This season he doubles his carries to 79 and drops a full 1.1 yard per carry in his average. Not to mention Gary never saw the endzone and fumbled the ball 4 times. It appears the youngster has been completely surpassed in terms of ability by Curt Warner. Unless something happens to the Rams starter Gary may not get a chance to re-affirm himself.

                            -----------------------------------------------------
Review: The Los Angeles Rams were very close to having a successful 1990 season. Whether it was the lack of coaching by John Robinson late in the season, or just the team failing overall, the final 3 weeks of the year were horrible for the Rams. The Rams had a shot at returning to the playoffs for the 7th time in 8 years under Robinsons reign. However those 3 losses cemented themselves a nice view of the playoffs from their couches. The Rams have the potential, especially in the passing game. But mediocre seasons by Jim Everett and co. will not get it done. The one humongous shining nova star for the Rams however was linebacker Kevin Greene, who dominated in every facet this season. The Rams team is young though, and could just as easily turn some of these losses around to victories in 1991 on their way to another playoff birth.

                              Redskins Year Report
                              ================================================== =
                              Coach: Joe Gibbs
                              Yrs: 10
                              Season Record: 9-7
                              Overall Record: 100-52 (.658)
Status: Its hard enough to find a head coach in the NFL that has a winning percentage over 65%. Let alone one that has that spread over a 10 year career. Joe Gibbs is without a doubt one of the best head coahes to ever teach the game. Gibbs has only had a single loosing season (1988, 7-9) in his 10 years with the Washington Redskins, and 1990 was no different. The Redskins ended 1990 with a disappointing 9-7 record. It was disappointing because of how competitive the NFC is, it resulted in not achieving a playoff wild card birth. As far as Gibbs goes hes still got 2 more seasons under contract with the Redskins, and baring any decisions, should easily remain the Redskins coach well into the future.

Info: There is no doubt that Wilbur Marshall is a solid linebacker in the league, after making appearances in two other Pro Bowls it was evident that the league thought the same. However in 1990 Marshall was out to make sure people wouldnt forget this 27 year olds contributions. Marshall took the Redskins team MVP away with an amazing season that not only saw him lead the team in tackles, loss, sacks, forced fumbles, fumbles recovered, but came 2nd against the pass in deflections and interceptions! Marshall proved his versatility in 1990 with these amazing numbers that earned him his 3rd Pro Bowl appearance.

Info: While the Redskins did not particularily enjoy the 3.1 yard per carry average, Byner got the touchdowns right. His 9 touchdowns were a career high beating out his previous 8 (1985, 1987) during his tenure with the Browns. Byner has the strength to be a solid power back in the league, but he has proven rather inconsistent over the years. Hopefully he can keep and even improve on the production he had in 1990 so that the Redskins will do so as well, as a team.

Info: 24 year old Martin Mayhew led the Redskins in interceptions last season. The ability of the youngster is not doubted, it is his off-field attitude that has brought up some issues behind the scenes in Washington. However if he can put all that behind him there is a good chance Mayhew will be challenging Darrell Green (92 ovr) next season due to his amazing progression in 1990. (85).

Info: After two straight 70+ reception, 1,100+ yard seasons 1990 was definitely a horrible year for Sanders. Sanders may have suffered some injuries but that was still no reason that he wasnt a letdown in 1990. When Sanders was playing Mark Rypien was frustrated with him because he was dropping a significant amount of passes. His 7 drops to 3 touchdowns wasnt exactly star-caliber numbers. And his 12.8 average per catch was the lowest season total so far of his career.

Info: Rypien finally got to start a full season in 1989 and put up some stellar numbers with 3,768 yards and 22 touchdowns. The Redskins passing game flourished as Art Monk, Ricky Sanders, and Gary Clark all caught over 1,000 yards. Thusly the expectations bar was set pretty high for the 3rd year quarterback in 1990. Unfortunately he did not produce as he lost nearly a thousand yards and 4 touchdowns from last season, thusly hurting the receivers in their production as well. Overall it was an off year for the Redskins passing game that will hopefully be remedied next season.

                              Redskins Review
                              -----------------------------------------------------
Review: The Washington Redskins had a solid 9-7 record in 1990, but that just wasnt enough to get into the playoffs. Joe Gibbs will definitely not be happy with that as it is assured he wil ride his team next season to an improved record. However that greatly depends on the output of the Redskins offense. Mark Rypien did not play up to snuff in 1990 and as a result neither did the Redskins receivers. Their running game was steady with Byner, but not stellar. The only great part of the Redskins game in 1990 was their defensive output with stars like Wilbur Marshall, Darrell Green, and youngster Martin Mayhew pulling out the stops. The Redskins are maybe 1 or 2 free agents away from garnering that extra victory to put them in the playoffs, and hopefully they can accomplish that next year.

                                Saints Year Report
                                ================================================== =
                                Coach: Jim Mora
                                Yrs: 5
                                Season Record: 8-8
                                Overall Record: 46-33 (.582)
Status: Jim Mora is a very underrated coach, and its unfortunately because he coaches the New Orleans Saints. In his 5th year Mora has only managed 1 loosing season, his first in 1986. Although Mora has declined in wins by 1 each season since 1988 (10-6). Moras contract is up this off-season, so itll be interesting to see if the Saints have faith in him and re-sign, or let him go. Mora proved his ability to coach in 1990 when the Saints started the year 2-7. Then Mora got his team together and they finished out the year 6-1 with the only loss coming to the Dallas Cowboys in Week 15.

Info: Rickey Jackson led the Saints in tackles by a single tackle over teammate Sam Mills, but destroyed the competition in sacks with his 6 sacks difference. Jackson proved his versatility as a linegacker earning himself his 5th Pro Bowl appearance. The 32 year old veteran is refusing to slow down, and thats scaring offenses around the league.

Info: Sam Mills was only a tackle away from the team lead in 1990 (129). He did however lead the team in forced fumbles, proving a key difference maker on the defense. Mills is 31 years old, but he, along with 32 year old Rickey Jackson are playing younger than they are. Mills 11 deflections were also a surprising #2 on the team, proving he can cover the pass with the best of them.

Info: Rueben Mayes struggled battling with Dalton Hillard and Craig Heyward in order to ge the full respect of carries in 1990 for the Saints. That being said Mayes showed the Saints made the right choice when he was in the game this season. Mayes but together his first 1,000+ yard rushing season since his rookie year with them in 1986. He also put up career highs in all receiving categories, trying to bring some versatility to his game. Mayes actually went to the Pro Bowl in his rookie year, 1986, and in 1987 (917 yards, 5 touchdowns) due to lack of competion according to critics. But if Mayes can continue to not only put up these numbers but improve, then he could be the new star New Orleans runningback.

                                1. - WR Eric Martin 66 Rec 11.0 Avg 727 Yds 6 TD 4 Drop
Info: After two consecutive 1,000+ yard seasons with 7+ touchdowns it had appeared that Eric Martin finally hit his stride. However the 29 year old receiver had a lackluster 1990 season. His 11.0 average was easily the worst total of his areer, and his 727 yards paled in comparison to his expectations. The sad part? He either tied or led the Saints in all these categories.

                                2. - WR Lonzell Hill 17 Rec 12.9 Avg 220 Yds
Info: The 4th year receiver was originally slated to be the #2 after productive 1988, and 1989 seasons where he combined for 114 catches, 1,339 yards and 11 touchdowns as the Saints #2 receiver. But in 1990 Hill was beat out by not only Brett Perrimann, but Floyd Turner as well. As a result Hill caught only 17 catches for 220 yards, racking up career lows in all categories.

                                3. - TE Hoby Brenner - 23 Rec 4.3 Avg 100 Yds
Info: Hoby Brenner had appeared to finally find his niche in the passing game with a 400 yards 4 touchdown year. However he decided to divide his performance in 4ths for his 1990 season where he had a paltry 100 yards on 23 catches, and no touchdowns what-so-ever. Brenner may be finding himself out of a starting job if this continues.

                                -----------------------------------------------------
Review: The New Orleans Saints had a decent 1990 where Jim Mora led them to an 8-8 record after a shaky 2-7 start. The Saints heart was not in doubt, but its their ability to get to the big game that is. The Saints passing game screamed average in 1990 as theyre highest receiver had 66 catches and 727 yards. With a confusion of quarterbacks at the helm it will require some stability in the future if the Saints want to efficiently garner a playoff spot. However the historical linebacking corps, combined with some decent secondary players makes the Saints defense a much improved entity that is capable of giving them the few surprise victories theyll require to improve.
