Nirvana to Release 20th Anniversary Edition of "Nevermind"

Nirvana’s seminal “Nevermind” turns 20 this year, and the album will be reissued in a four-CD, one-DVD set Sept. 19.
It’s hard to imagine what could be left in the Nirvana vaults to fill out the CDs. The box Set “With the Lights Out” came out in 2004 without many worthwhile new tracks outside of “You Know You’re Right.” Most of the band’s early B-sides and rarities were released on “Incesticide” in 1992.

Even one former band member is confused as to what the reissue will include.

“I mean, as far as content and releases and stuff like that, honestly, it’s like I’m the drummer again,” Dave Grohl told Rolling Stone. “I’m the last one to know anything. It’s almost like a wedding anniversary – something that someone reminds you of about a week beforehand, and then you panic and buy flowers.”

In a news release, Universal Music said “Nevermind” 20th anniversary edition will include “unreleased recordings, rarities, b-sides, BBC radio appearances, alternative mixes, rare live recordings and an unreleased concert in its entirety.”

Some speculation has focused on the original Butch Vig-produced tracks for “Nevermind.” Vig worked with the band for two months of recording, but the final mixes were produced by Andy Wallace, and frontman Kurt Cobain lamented that the final product sounded too slick.

Universal did not say if the Vig tracks will be included.

Grohl, however, said to expect some surprises related to the 20th anniversary.

“I wouldn’t doubt it if something very special happens,” he told Rolling Stone. “We have a few things up our sleeves. I can’t really say anything yet. But you’ll see. It’ll be fun.”

I can't wait to hear the Butch Vig mixes, as I prefer the "rawer" In Utero album compared to the "Radio-Friendly" Nevermind. If I was to guess what unreleased concert it will include, it would be the 1991 Paramount Theater show in Seattle. The whole concert was filmed, but only about 2 songs were ever released from the show for whatever reason.

The limited, numbered Super Deluxe Edition only 10,000 copies available in North America, and another 30,000 for the rest of the world. The Super Deluxe features the original remastered album and accompanying studio and live B-sides, the first full official release of the pre-Nevermind demos recorded at producer Butch Vig's Smart Studios, as well as boombox recordings of subsequent rehearsals. The Super Deluxe also includes a new perspective on the finished Nevermind album exclusive to the Super DE t in the form of the Devonshire Mixes: the album as produced and mixed by Vig as opposed to the final version produced by Vig and mixed by Andy Wallace. Also on the Super Deluxe are a pair of previously unreleased BBC recordings and the 1991 Paramount show available for the first time and exclusive to this format on CD and DVD (which also features all four music videos from Nevermind), as well as a stunning 90-page bound book full of rarely and never- before-seen photos, documents and various other visual artifacts of the Nevermind era.

The Paramount concert, transferred from 16mm film and multi-track audio, is the only known Nirvana concert shot to film and will be available in a 1080p high-definition picture and uncompressed 5.1 surround sound and stereo on stand-alone Blu-ray, along with DVD and digital long form video formats.
I was right, the concert is the Paramount show. Glad to see it's in 1080p, I can't wait for this!

The BBC recordings are average, they've been floating around on Livenirvana for fuck knows how many years.

Hopefully theres a studio/demo version of Talk to Me in the archives they can put on it. Most underated Nirvana song EVAR!!!1

If I was to guess what unreleased concert it will include, it would be the 1991 Paramount Theater show in Seattle. The whole concert was filmed, but only about 2 songs were ever released from the show for whatever reason.
Think it had to do with the fact the finished mix they came up with was pretty poorly done - on the three songs they used on LTSO from the concert every single shot there's at least two other camera man floating around in plain sight.

Hopefully this means they finally got round to getting the raw footage and remixing it in a way so there's more band members in the footage then overweight camera men huffing and puffing around the stage.

I agree, I really like Talk to Me. Another underrated song from the Nevermind-era I also like is Old Age, but Cobain is mumbling for most of the recording, sadly.

Im very disappointed in the track listings.

The unreleased song "Sappy" from the Nevermind recording is no where to be found.

The two other tracks that were cut from Nevermind, Old Age and Verse Chorus Verse, were sadly not remastered or remixed.

No mixes from the 1/1/91 recording are present.

Another song from the Nevermind recordings that producer Butch Vig talked highly about is also missing from this set. "There was one that we recorded that was really catchy, it was called 'Song in D'. It would have been another great song."

And another thing that irks me is there are the exact same tracks on 3 of the 4 CDs. Very pointless.

I'm pretty pissed at the amount of recordings they aren't releasing. Nirvana is basically releasing songs/mixes that have been around for years (all though, they are unofficial).

Not even releasing all of the BBC Sessions.

Slack. And 3 of the B-Sides (The Live versions of Drain You, Been a Son and School) are just live recordings from the Paramount Concert, so there is no need to have them on Disc 2 when they are on Disc 4 as part of the entire concert anyway.

Although at least we know there will be a decent Easter Egg on the DVD... maybe that's where they'll put in Song in D, they love hiding random rare shit on their DVDs. Although it's generally videos, hopefully it's Endless Nameless from 1-18-91.

It's also a shame they didn't put 8-15-91 on the live CD instead of the Paramount Show. Apparently the greatest gig they ever did and not even a second audio or video has ever leaked, whether it be audience or pro shot/soundboard.

08/15/91 - The Roxy Theatre, West Hollywood, CA

                  Notes

                  The band opened with "School."
Some have called this the best Nirvana show of all time. Kerrang! magazine even gave this show 1st place in its list of "The 100 Greatest Gigs of All Time."
The show was basically a showcase for Geffen/DGC and a way to get the media excited about the band.
The band played on rented gear.
Stage divers kept stepping on Kurt's effect pedals and disconnecting his guitar, prompting him to say, "I'm all for stage diving, but just don't step on my pedals," according to an attendee.
After "Smells Like Teen Spirit," Krist mentioned that they would be filming a music video for the song that weekend. At the end of the show, people from Geffen handed out flyers to fans to get extras for the video shoot. At one point between songs, Kurt read the flyer to the crowd.

                  Uncirculated Recordings

                  amateur video
About four TVs around the venue were showing video of the show while the band was playing, so it's possible that it was recorded by the venue.
                  amateur video
At least two other people were seen video taping the show.

Im debating now whether or not to pay $150 for the super deluxe one. Doesn't really add anything new to my collection besides the Vig mixes, and you can buy the concert DVD separate.

I wonder if the people behind this were too stupid or just trying to milk us for more money by not releasing a lot Nirvana's other work.

I've decided not to pay $150 (off the top of my head) for the Super Deluxe version. I can get the 2CD version and the DVD and save about $100, since all you're really paying for extra is a book and 11 rough Nirvana mixes (which I will definitely still torrent).

It turns out Sappy and proper mixes of Old Age and Verse Chorus Verse are a deal breaker to me.

She's sold out Nirvana before, and she'll do it again. Ironic, considering this is the last thing Cobain would have ever wanted to happen.

Anyways, Piratebay.org has the remastered Nevermind tracks on there. I just torrented them and am listening to them right now.
