Interesting deal for the Pirates if it happens.

They have nothign to lose really and if there's ever a year to cobble together a miracle run in the NL Central...this is the season. Milwaukee and St Louis are dealing with huge losses/changeovers. The Astros and Cubs suck. The Reds IMO are legit but anything can happen.

Might as well go out there and try it if you think you can sneak up on the division a bit.

The Pirates could put together one of those KC Royals runs from 2003 where they likely don't make the playoffs but hoever at around or just over .500 all season and are a feel good story etc.

Expected to be finalized today. Burnett to Pirates for "two marginal prospects", accordong to ESPN.

Of course, this is the same ESPN who said the Reds acquired Latos for "a package centered around Edinson Volquez, and three minor leaguers", despite the fact Volquez was a salary dump and the deal was really centered around Alonso & Grandal. And also the same ESPN who said the Nats "got a steal" by acquiring Gio Gonzales for "minor leaguers", never reporting them by name or recognizing that Oakland got a pretty decent haul.

Michael Jordan's 49th birthday is a top story on SportsCenter today, so yeah.

CANT WAIT to see who we get.

The trade is "nearing [the] finish line," tweets Joel Sherman of the New York Post. The two prospects the Yankees will receive in the deal are A-level players and "not considered much."

What were you expecting? The guy is a number 5 starter now and he still costs the Pirates like 13 million.

They could have had John Lannan for less. Just saying ...
The king was shaken. He went up to the room over the gateway and wept.
As he went, he said: "O my son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom!
If only I had died instead of you
O Absalom, my son, my son!"

The Pirates will send right-handed reliever Diego Moreno and outfielder Exicardo Cayones to New York in return, sources said. Moreno, a 25-year-old from Venezuela, has split the past two seasons between the Class A and Double-A minor league teams. Cayones, who is 20, spent 2011 in Class A.

After more than a week of back-and-forth discussion, the Yankees and Pirates formally announced the deal that will send A.J. …

The pitcher looks like dogshit. 25 years old, and can't get out of single A. He gets bumped to AA at the end of the season each year, and gets rocked.

The OF looks ok. Just turned 20, high OBA in RK ball the last two years.

If I were the Pirates, I'd be pretty damn happy about getting Burnett for that cheap and giving up barely warm bodies. The Yankees are just happy to get him out of town.
Let's not get crazy, Burnett has the second worst ERA among all MLB starters the last two seasons.

Don't get me wrong, it's well worth the low risk the Pirates are taking and I think he will be better than whatever they had at the bottom, but he's not a number one or number two, not even for them.

You missed the key words "for them"...they have guys who get hot early on...last year it was Correia, and they ran out Charlie Morton and Jeff Karstens...they got a bunch of 170 shitty inning eaters...Burnett, will probably be their leader in IP barring any kind of ridiculous injury, and either those sub-4.00 Pirates SP's (Morton, Karstens, Morton) balloon up those ERAs, or Burnett's come down, either way...if he's not one of their "top guys" at the position by seasons end, color me baffled...and I think Burnett is trash.

Doesn't matter, it was just about dumping AJ. If the Pirates pushed it enough they probably could've gotten away with sending the Yanks 6 highly regarded beer vendors and a year supply of Cracker Jacks.

Yeah, I understand the Yankees angle here, but I always like to take a look at what these teams get anyway.
