    Dodgers Acquire Joe Blanton

The Dodgers acquired Joe Blanton from the Phillies for a player to be named later or cash considerations, the Phillies announced. The Dodgers claimed Blanton off of waivers, according to the Phillies, who have called up right-hander B.J. Rosenberg in a related move.

Blanton has a 4.59 ERA with 7.8 K/9, 1.2 BB/9 and a 43.9% ground ball rate in 133 1/3 innings for the Phillies this year. The 31-year-old earns $8.5MM -- $2.8MM between now and the end of the season -- and is set to hit free agency this fall.

Every National League team but the Giants, Cardinals, Pirates, Reds, Braves and Nationals appears to have passed on the chance to claim Blanton. He drew interest from the Orioles from leading up to the non-waiver trade deadline, but Baltimore was reluctant to match Philadelphia's asking price.

What?! Hahaha... I guess Blanton for free is better than letting the AAA staff take turns with spot starts.

I doubt the Dodgers get Lee but man the balls it takes to make a claim like that when the Phillies could theoretically be willing to just unload that contract onto the Dodgers is just pure awesomeness. What fan doesn't love seeing their team do that?

Also, where is DerpySlayer to talk shit about the Dodgers moves at the deadline? Blanton comes as a steal and wonderful marginal pickup, League and Victorino arrive practically for free, Hanley at his worst is a marginal upgrade and at best is the steal of century, Choate is the lefty specialist from Mattingly's wet dreams... They're clearly not done yet, either.

Blanton should also be helped by playing a lot of games in a pitchers division as well. This is actually pretty good for him heading into Free Agency. Dodgers get someone who can eat innings anyway, which will help down the stretch.

100% agree. His K/BB mentality is perfect for pitching in the West. Home games at Dodger Stadium and away games at Petco Park and AT&T Park will do great things for a guy who gives up HRs. Nice big outfields + marine layer.

              Umm...

Only one of the three players in that trade (Clayton Mortensen) is in the majors right now, and he's with the Red Sox.

in the 5th inning vs. Pittsburgh this afternoon, these things happened to Blanton in order:

                  1. Allows two monstrous home runs to Garrett Jones and Pedro Alvarez
                  2. Is replaced by his manager
                  3. Is ejected from the game on his way to the dugout
                  4. Loses his shit and gets in the umpire's face

In Blanton's defense, the home plate umpire was incredibly shitty. Not in Blanton's defense is that he's been fucking horrible for the Dodgers. I am finding it hard to justify having him in the rotation as opposed to some minor league guy. I've never missed Ted Lilly more. Here's hoping he's back into the rotation come September.

To be honest I've liked what I've seen from him so far, stuff wise. I never knew he was such a fucking baby out on the mound though, every borderline call he's making frownie faces like a little bitch. First few starts he's definitely dealt with some bad fortune, I think he's a strong 4/5.
