I'm really excited to see what Fernandez can do, interesting that he was chosen over former top prospect Jacob Turner (who the Marlins acquired in the Anibal Sanchez deal last year). I can remember back in 2010, I wanted the Brewers to trade Prince Fielder for Turner. I admit I was wrong about that one.

Got to see Fernandez in Hagerstown last year...think he had 10 Ks over five innings in miserable weather. Incredible talent, but like everyone else said, this makes no sense.

This is actually the most exciting thing going on with the Marlins this year, hopefully it doesn't hurt his future. They already have 3 guys who need a lot of work in Eovaldi, Alvarez, and Turner(sent down already). Nolasco is probably gone at the deadline.

I think you guys are underestimating this kid a little bit, he might have his struggles, but I expect an ERA below 4.50 from him this year. The move doesn't make sense from a baseball operations standpoint, but this is the best way to sell tickets. If successful he could be a bigger draw then Mike Stanton. Remember the kid is Cuban, and the Marlin's stadium is in the Cuban neighborhood in Miami. Ever since the stadium plans started, it was clear that Loria wanted to draw in the Cuban market. This is the best way to do it.

Warner only commented on this in chatbox but he said that fantasy owners should trade Fernandez now (before season starts) because his value will never be higher; predicting that Fernandez would be sent back to AAA with a high 4 ERA by May.

Well it's June 14th. Fernandez has made 13 starts. 3.11 ERA, 9.58 K/9, 3.36 BB/9, 0.75 HR/9. He just dominated the best team in baseball with a 7 IP, 10 K, 2 ER performance.

At the moment, Fernandez is about 1/2 the way to the 140 IP he had last year, so you figure 180 is a decent projection...if they are planning a limit.

This is kind of a cold way to look at this ... but why should the Marlins give two fucks about his shoulder? There is a really good chance that in 6 years he is either too expensive for them to keep and thus trade bait, or has already sustained a major arm injury anyway.

Just the nature of the beast, pitchers get hurt. Even the ones who are "handled" properly will get hurt. I'm starting to think the best method for a team is to just ride their young starters until the wheels fall off, then let them walk when their arb years are done. Give no fucks about protecting the longterm investment, because that's not the way pitchers' career arcs work, nor is it how the salary structure in baseball operates.

Trade value is exactly why they will want to put him on an innings limit. They're not going to trade him this year. Most likely next year and 2015 will be his most valuable trade window. He'll be quite good by then, and still have an affordable contract. They need to keep him healthy until they can trade him.

So you're suggesting that the Marlins sole purpose for existing is to trade ML talent now.

While Miami very well could trade Fernandez one day, optimizing the return of that trade certainly isn't their number one priority at the moment.
