Apparently this rating system doesn't calculate "ability to beat the Lions to get into the playoffs"

ESPN tries to build a better quarterback rating
Posted by Michael David Smith on August 1, 2011, 5:11 PM EDT
Quarterback rating is a statistic every football fan knows but few really get. Why is it scaled so that 158.3 is a perfect score? Why does it only include passing, and not other aspects of quarterback play like avoiding sacks and running? Why does it penalize interceptions but not fumbles? Why does it treat a six-yard completion on second-and-5 the same as a six-yard completion on third-and-11?

The NFL adopted passer rating as an official statistic in 1973

Writers always refer to it as "Quarterback rating", when its really a "passer rating". Leave it to ESPN to contradict themselves within the first two paragraphs of the article, when the appropriate "passer rating" term is used. Why does it only include passing, and not other aspects of quarterback play? Because its a passer rating.

The stats adjust for quarterbacks facing an unusually high number of these situations.

        This sounds terrible.

This looks more like the "this is who we are blowing" this season list from ESPN

Or maybe it's because based on this set of stats, Eli is what you want in a quarterback.

So just to make things clearer they're introducing a statistic about 1000x more convoluted. Great.

Exactly. IMO, the best passing efficiency statistic was developed by Allen Barra. Take a QB's passing yardage, subtract 50 yards for each INT, then divide by attempts. Pretty simple. It avoids the ridiculous "completion percentage" stat, and it doesn't penalize QBs on bad teams that don't get a lot of TD opportunities. It measures how many yards a QB gets per pass attempt, and how many times does he turn the ball over.

They are going way too far with this.

Peter Keating explains how Total Quarterback Rating (QBR), ESPN's new metric for quarterbacks, can shift the way we see the game by finally measuring the performance of football's most important position more accurately.

                        "New formula will REDEFINE QBs"

People will always rate the QBs the way they personally think they should be ranked. Some long ass formula calculated by a buncha sports nerds aint gunna redefine the way we look at QBs.

I surely don't want my QB turning the ball over 30+ times.

so this new "redefined" ranking system is pretty much going to conclude manning, rogers, brees, brady and vick are really really good. how is this redefining? :cookiemonster2:
