Did they also work 80 hour weeks to line the pockets of their supervisors? A full ride isn't really that great of a deal when you factor in that these guys aren't allowed to even have jobs. They're getting less than minimum wage when you count up all the time they commit to practices, meetings, lifting and class.
.
Boo fucking hoo.
Free ride>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>.student loans AND having to work a minimum wage job in college.Comment

IDGAF if you feel sorry for them or not, that's not the point. The point is the NCAA sucks.Comment

My wife pays $600 a month in student loan debt. I'm sure she would have loved to have been "exploited" in college by playing a sport to not have that issue.....Comment

No they shouldn't.
I love how this all gets directed towards football when it overlooks the fact that no one gives a shit if the swimmer getting a full ride gets paid. You can say the NCAA makes billions, whatever. Do not care. 99.9% of athletes in college don't go pro in shit...and they realize the value of playing a game is in the free education. I'm not making an exception for football or basketball.
Do you honestly feel like EVERY single scholarship athlete should be paid?Comment

I think the NCAA can afford to break a few bread crumbs off of these gigantic TV deals:
Originally posted by http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=6471380The Pac-10 -- soon to officially become the Pac-12 -- has agreed to a 12-year television contract with ESPN and Fox that will more than triple its media rights fees and be the most valuable for any conference in college sports.
The contract, which will begin with the 2012-13 season, will be worth more than $225 million per year -- or $2.7 billion over the life of the deal, Sports Business Daily and The Associated Press reported on Tuesday.Originally posted by http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/writers/michael_rosenberg/01/20/texas.tv/index.htmlESPN is playing Texas $300 million over the next 20 years for the privilege of distributing the network.
Originally posted by http://www.sportsbusinessdaily.com/Daily/Issues/2010/06/Issue-183/Collegiate-Sports/Secs-TV-Deals-With-ESPN-CBS-Help-Bolster-Schools-Bottom-Lines.aspxSEC Commissioner Mike Slive Friday announced that the conference "will distribute about $209.0 million this year -- an average of $17.3 million to each school," according to Scott Hotard of the Baton Rouge ADVOCATE. That figure is up 57.7% from '09, when schools divided about $132.5M. This year's revenue was "the first to reflect the financial benefits" of the SEC's "lucrative 15-year contracts with CBS and ESPN." Hotard noted a difference of $65.6M "in TV provided most" of the record $66.5M revenue increase. The SEC this year "generated $109.5 million from football television and $30 million from basketball television"
There's money to go around. Pay your employees, you rich fucks.Comment

You honestly advocate paying the Boise State XC team?
I got paid 7.50 an hour to make a shitty TV show twice a week. I mostly sat on the couch next to my classroom and dicked around. If I can do that and get paid, these guys should be getting compensated for all the time they spend.

Point of reference. A year at ND costs over 40k a year. How many people here make more than that a year?
How many people at Microsoft, a company that makes shit tons of money, make at that or less than that? I don't get people's outrage/shock that an organization that makes that much money doesn't "pay" people more. Fuck it. These guys are getting by with out having to pay back over 100K over the course of 4 years and have the chance to get degrees that will net them incredibly solid incomes and network with people all over that can help them post graduation. Pardon me if I could give a shit whether Tommy Rees makes minimum wage from the NCAAComment

Say you pay them minimum wage and everyone is happy for 1-2 years. I bet you'd have a strike or something at some point with major athletes demanding more money.
Also should only be big time sports like basketball and football, or should every single scholarship athlete in any sport be paid? It is way too slippery of a slope to start paying them.Comment
