Johnson is an OLB in a 4-3 not in a 3-4. He cannot rush the passer one bit. You don't need to be fast to be a good OLB.

      Terrible trade for Patriots.
At the very least, they should have gotten a 2 and a 3 ... or a second this year and next.

See: Mike Vrabel last year with 12.5 sacks in what will obviously be the same system.

Yea in a 3-4 OLB you need to rush the passer. I don't think clancy pendergast runs the exact same 3-4 as Dean Pees though. Vrabel will play outside and Johnson is not fit to play OLB in a 3-4 and Curry can but would succeed inside much more.

I was a bit surprised, myself.

Bash the guy all you want, but Kansas really pulled off a good trade. They're bringing in a guy who already knows the system, which is a hell of a lot better than a rookie.

I see DJ being an excellent OLB in the 3-4, able to rush the passer and defend against the pass.
He doesn't have the moves or the strength to do so. When Vermiel was the Head Coach their defense did blitz and he showed his first couple years in the league that he can't rush. Plus putting Johnson outside would take away some of his strengths. He wouldn't be able to roam sideline to sideline and the only way he would be stopping the run would be setting the edge. Putting Johnson as a 3-4 OLB would show his weaknesses and take away from his strengths.

                  wow 7 pages already...

i think cassel is the equivalent of pennington, he just doesnt have a strong arm. the reason cassel looked good is cuz he was on a great team. we will have to wait and see, but with no real weapons on offense, cassel maybe in for more than he can handle.

Matt Cassel and a aging OLB for this years 2nd rounder. That's decent.

I think it helped him that no one ever fucking guards Wes Welker.

Well i don't think there is such thing as a football expert. It just matters if you know what your talking about. Derrick never was a defensive end and when he was in a different defensive scheme he was terrible at blitzing. Like i said in the previous post putting him as a 3-4 OLB would take away all his strengths and put him in a position that would easily show all his weaknesses. Maybe he can rush the passer i just don't think so. Also there is more than just rushing the passer i just don't see it. We'll have to have our own opinions and we'll see what happens

On Topic: The trade was almost the Patriots get the Lions 2nd round pick, the Lions get Jay Cutler, and the Broncos get Matt Cassel. That would've been an awesome trade.

And teams looking for QB help all have/had a shot at drafting one early this year, so the potential suitors for Cassel next year would be even worse unless there was some kind of injury.

If Brady doesn't play well next year they're screwed regardless if they got a 1st or 2nd round pick in this trade. They couldn't keep Cassel for $15mil and they couldn't just let him walk (In which case the best they would've gotten was a late 3rd round compensatory pick).
I agree, I thought it was a risk Franchising Cassel in the first place but definitely worked out for both teams. IMO, I think Cassel is going to play well in KC, if the Chiefs build around him, which I'm sure Pioli will bring in the right personnel necessary. The Pats drafted Ryan O'connell, QB, in the 3rd round of last years draft. I think they like him a lot to use a 3rd round pick for him. When was the last time you seen them go that high for a QB? Never. Of course this squashed any questions about Brady's injury, although on all accounts we will have to wait and see what happens. I personally can't wait!

i bet cassel's pissed. for 1, he doesn't get like 12 million a year anymore. 2, he plays for the chiefs.

The Franchise tender is guaranteed, he will make $14mil next season paid by the Chiefs, regardless of what his extension will be. An he also has a starting job with a team that has a new VP/GM that wants to win, Cassel was just handed the franchise. I would bet hes pumped?

no, if the chiefs sign him to a new deal it could be for 10 bucks a year, that franchise tag is only good if he doesnt get a new contract.
