DirecTV drops price of Sunday Ticket under $200

Posted by Mike Florio on April 20, 2012, 1:40 PM EDT

At a time everything relating to the NFL seems to be getting more and more expensive, one fairly significant aspect of the fan experience is getting cheaper.

According to Bloomberg.com, via SportsBusiness Daily, DirecTV will cut the price of its Sunday Ticket feature by more than 40 percent, to $199.95.

Also, the service once again will be provided free for one season to new subscribers.

Since 1994, Sunday Ticket has held exclusive rights to out-of-market games, making it an indispensable tool for anyone who follows a team that doesn’t have a local connection.

I think that is great news for DirecTV subscribers but I have to wonder how many of their customers only stick with DirecTV for Sunday Ticket regardless of the price. I believe the $199 price point is reasonable and if it expanded to all major providers, the NFL would would likely see higher revenues than they do under the current exclusivity model.

SAves me at least 100$ if true.

Eh, I'll keep watchin streams. Not worth paying that for me when I can hook my lappy up to my TV and watch any game and redzone channel

Dead horse is dead. I had the ticket on PS3 last season so you are about 2 season too late.

I have a feeling this won't apply to the guys using the Sunday Ticket feature on the PS3. Either way...I'm getting it again.

$200 gets you the ability to watch out of market games in HD, follow fantasy players/stats, and the mix channel (shows up to 8 games at same time).

$300 gets you that and the ability to watch games on computer, tablet, phone devices and Red Zone. Watch games throughout the week in just 30 minutes per game.

                    According to Directv website.

At the pace they were on, Sunday Ticket was going to be close to $500 this season. This was the year I was finally putting my foot down.

It looks like $199 is the games, the mix channel, and the fantasy garbo. That's fine. I'm willing to pay $199 for the games and the mix channel. I can live without Red Zone and the 30 minute replays. Red Zone was cool at first, but honestly if you are watching all the games at once you really aren't watching any of them.

                          Red Zone is fantastic.

There might be one game per week that's worth a damn to watch...otherwise, you don't really want to watch most of the NFL games. Well, unless you want that Sunday midday nap.

I find myself putting on Red Zone and then zoning out and not paying attention. I end up surfing the internet or cooking or eating or all of the above while the Red Zone serves as background noise. Outside of the brutal, painful, torture educing rams games I force myself to endure, I have very little interest in the NFL product these days anyway.

That is what I use it for.

I truly have no interest in watching Jaguars games...but I do anyway...but even then, I can really only get to half time before my brain looks like a cross between Chris Benoit's and Dave Duerson's...its that fucking boring.
