Dirk Koetter not pursuing head coaching positions

Dirk Koetter's been a hot name floating around various NFL openings over the past 48 hours or so. You can strike the Falcons offensive coordinator off the list of potential candidates --he's signed an extension with Atlanta.

The Falcons confirmed the news that Koetter signed an extension with the Falcons on Wednesday morning and will not pursue a head-coaching position, as first reported by Alex Marvez of FOX Sports.

Koetter, 53, had recently nterviewed with the Chiefs and Bears for their openings and was planning to speak with the Eagles and Browns as well.

But the Falcons apparently bowled him over with a deal, and perhaps by pointing out that another year with the combo of Matt Ryan/Roddy White/Julio Jones would only make him a more attractive candidate in the future.

Koetter previously had been head coach at Boise State and Arizona State before jumping to the NFL to be the offensive coordinator of the Jaguars. When Jack Del Rio was dumped, Koetter pseudo-flopped with current Jags coach Mike Mularkey, taking Mularkey's spot as OC in Atlanta.

The Falcons ranked eighth in total yardage, sixth in passing yardage and fifth in passing touchdowns in the NFL this season en route to capturing the No. 1 seed in the NFC.
