Although he was fired as the Redskins offensive coordinator after the season, Kyle Shanahan continues to draw significant interest for a new job. Shanahan already interviewed for the Dolphins offensive coordinator job he ultimately didn't get, and the Baltimore Sun reports that Shanahan has landed a second interview with the Ravens for that same job.
Shanahan would replace Jim Caldwell, who left Baltimore to take the Lions head coaching job. Last season, the Ravens ranked 29th in the league in offense and quarterback Joe Flacco, after getting his humongous offseason contract, didn't play well for much of the year.
The Redskins under Shanahan's leadership, meanwhile, ranked ninth in the league in total offense but only 23rd in scoring. Also, it would be fair to say that quarterback Robert Griffin III regressed from his impressive rookie season.
Griffin and Shanahan also reportedly didn't have much of a relationship, and working under his father, Mike Shanahan, caused some to believe Kyle Shanahan was a bit of an annoyance.
As CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora wrote recently:
As a former member of the organization put it: “Kyle bitches about everything, and then his father has to fix it. He bitches about the food in the cafeteria, he bitches about the field, he bitches about the equipment. He complains and then Mike takes care of it. Kyle is a big problem there. He is not well liked.”
Several members of the organization said Kyle Shanahan was a cause of internal strife, surrounding himself with young coaches with inferior experience, and allowing for no checks and balances of outside voices in the offensive coaching rooms.
“This is the NFL, it's not supposed to be a training ground for coaches,” said someone who has worked with Kyle Shanahan in Washington. “It's ridiculous. Look at this staff. It sucks. ... Kyle's not that confident, so they set him up with a bunch of yes men rather than have some experienced coaches to push him. It's like Kyle is the pied piper and these kids just follow him around."
Shanahan isn't the only candidate, though. Steelers running back coach Kirby Wilson also will receive a second interview for the Baltimore coordinator job, and Ravens receivers coach Jim Hostler also is a candidate.
