They're not trying to play as individual HOFers though. They're playing really sound team defense, which is their goal.

A perfect example is the Sherman tip from the NFC Championship game. Sherman could've just tipped the ball down and taken the PD? But instead he decided to tip the ball up because he saw his teammate coming, and knew it would benefit his team even though he wouldn't show up on the stat sheet.

Of course, Sherman went on to take all the spotlight and credit, but at the time it happened, it was incredible team defense.

I'm pretty sure noone "tried" to play like HOF individual on the 78 Steelers. That defense just happened to have a HOFer on every level. Any team with a no.1 defense and SB is giving a team effort. This is a talent question as I stated.
They don't have a unique scheme , telling stats , or HOF talent which are hallmarks of the greatest defenses ever. The biggest attribute is youth and depth which the 90s Cowboys had more of. Viking , Rams , Falcons had some defenses that were just as stellar but didn't win.
On the plus side their secondary is probably the best of any top defense ever. None of those 4 is a weak spot. Front 7 talent just lacks a dominant player. Maybe if they import Cortez Kennedy with a Madden card.

if you wanna go by Superbowl play;
then Seahawks of last night by far without small margin is superior to all.
the Broncos were done after their 1st offensive play. no chance what so ever.

the others on my list, were somewhat games for a few quarters. except for the Bears/Patriots. that game lasted 1 quarter, lol.
probably the worst and most boring SB i have seen

Has the #1 defense in a given year ever destroyed a favored opponent (and #1 offense) more completely in a Super Bowl? I'll have to let a few days pass before I can put it all into perspective but it without a doubt has to rank in the top 3 of all time for a single season.

I do still think the Seahawks DB's get away with a lot of illegal hands and holds just because they know the officials are not going to flag them each and every play.

Top 5 all-time. Each decade has had its share of great defenses and for now this is far and away the best D of the 10's .. The Ravens and Bucs were something scary in the early 2000's ... Blanking out on the 90's.. Bears in the 80's etc

Bucs should have an asterisk by this one. I don't buy into Callahan mailing the game in on purpose like some do, but lets be real about it. Gruden would know what they wanted to do in each situation, what each player was capable of, what Rich Gannon might audible to based off the pre-snap read.

TB defense was top notch. but it sure helped that they knew all the calls and knew what was coming before the ball was snapped.

Oh yeah, not taking away anything they did leading up to the Super Bowl, as it's one of the best defensive units for sure. The beating they put down on Oakland in that game is the only thing that would need an asterisk in my mind.

I won't say the Seahawks are the number 1 all time but they should get some extra points for having to play D in a league where everything favors the offense

most are saying 85 Bears are best..so we are only talking about being great for 1 statistical year, right ?

the Steelers defense was better longer-as kingofootball said- ...the Bears never got to a SB before or since with those players but had a great Season and SB..they won 15 games that year,not 13 and ended up with 3 defensive hall of famers..including a hall of fame coach and RB walter Payton....Seattle isn't great yet but one heck of a one hit wonder until further notice

Looking at raw numbers from the game itself, the Bears would appear to have an edge. They held the Patriots to just 12 first downs, seven rushing yards, and 116 passing yards. They also forced six turnovers in the game (four fumbles, two interceptions), and dominated time of possession by a nearly 2/1 margin. As for the Bears’ offense, they racked up 408 yards, including 167 on the ground, and saw Jim McMahon throw for 256 yards while rushing for two touchdowns in the easy victory.

As for the Seahawks, their numbers were good, but not quite as impressive. The Broncos still managed 17 first downs in the game, and while they only rushed for 27 yards, Manning threw for 280 and set a Super Bowl record for most completions in a game with 34. He did throw two interceptions, including one that was returned for a touchdown.

On the offensive side of the ball, the Seahawks were good, but not quite to the level of the Bears. Russell Wilson threw for 206 yards in the game, including two touchdowns, and also rushed for 26 yards. The Seahawks did rack up 135 yards rushing in the contest, giving them an impressive total of 341 yards of offense.

For those putting it on the top 5 what are you basing it on.
"Offense oriented league"
"Most impressive superbowl" are odd criteria.
The first part while very true also means that it's retard easy to have a high scoring offense. Does anyone really think that Broncos offense is as talent laden as say the 90 bills , the 01 Rams ?

How is everyone sleeping on the 76 Steelers? Pitched 5 shutouts, and then 2 games they allowed 3 points and another they allowed 6. Over those 8 regular season games the 76 Steelers allowed a combined 12 points.
