Lol the Steelers have been mentioned in like half the posts. Narrowing it to 76 is fine but those units were so dominant saying 70s kinda covers that.

BTW anyone else really in the mood to play Madden but with nothing but "classic" teams ?
Unfortunately have to play it on an emulator .

if you dont win the SB you shouldnt be in this discussion. 76 steelers were great, so were the 94 browns. but if you couldnt lead your team to a SB win then are you really one of the top all time defenses? ravens of 2000 would be a perfect example of a defense being so great they made their team win the SB

      i can only list a top 5 which would have - 70ies steelers, 85 bears, 86 giants, 02 bucs, 14 seahawks.

Eh that was easily their best defense of the entire decade. It's like saying the 2000's Ravens and including the rest of their great defenses of the decade just to bunch them all into one. They had a span of 6 games where their starting QB threw 0 tds to 3 ints.... they won all 6 games.

the ravens didnt have a dynasty defense. they had decent years before and after 2000, but the 2000 defense was their one real defense. The 70ies steelers had a full decade of dominate defense and a dynasty....stat wise the 76 team was their best points allowed, but anyone could argue the 74, 75, 77, 78, 79 defenses as being the greatest of them all. with the ravens its just 2000

                    I strongly disagree.

Look at the final 9 games of that season. Easily the most dominant defensive stretch in NFL history.

SF defense was actually pretty mediocre in the 90s. They signed every FA known to man for there 94 run. They got by because they were extremely good up the middle..Young Stubblefield Norton and Mcdonald were all beasts. Outside talent was mediocre after 94. Even when they ranked high they had 8 games against bad teams and were always ahead.
Philadelphia had beast defenses with Buddy at the helm and Reggie White wreaking havoc. Those were some of the better defenses of the 90s.
I think Pittsburgh had one or two outstanding units when Woodson/Lake/Lloyd/Greene were at there best.

I'll just come right out and say it: The 1977 Atlanta Falcons were the best defense in modern NFL history (Read: The Super Bowl Era). Before you comment about the 1985 Bears or the 2000 Ravens, I would ask you to simply continue reading...

In terms of a single game (the Super Bowl), yes, the Seahawks D is among the top all time, especially considering the rules in place. However, I find it tough to say they are among the best all-time for an entire season when their stats just don't match up to the likes of teams like the Steel Curtain or the 2000 Ravens. I know the rules are different, but I just cannot say the Seahawks had a better D than the 85 Bears or many other teams in the conversation.

I think people want to rank teams way too soon after the SB. Gotta wait a second and let it sink in to really put things into perspective.

One thing that drove me crazy about Seattle's pass D ... is it just me or do they get away with more shit past the 5-yard zone than any team in the league?

I am not a Denver fan, could care less who won, but Seattle's DBs seem to do more shit beyond the 5-yard zone than what's supposed to be allowed in the NFL touch football league.

If I were Goodell, frankly I would allow 70s contact beyond the 5-yard limit myself. It would give the D a chance ... but IMO the refs were only calling Seattle's shit when the game was out of reach. Again, shit I personally agree with ... but it seems only Seattle gets away with it on a consistent basis.

It was a great one game performance, but I don't see how that equates to ranking them as an all time great. As usual with SB winners people are overtating.

One thing the league is supposedly concerned about is that defences are in fact fouling relentlessly and calling the referees' bluff. The theory, and it seems to be correct, is that referees might catch you once or twice but they aren't going to call you on the other 70 or so plays in the game. When you combine that with an extreme perceived home field advantage and also the perception of a monstrous defence, it makes it even harder for referees to call against the Seahawks.

When you look at the defensive penalties racked up by playoff teams this year, Kansas, Indianapolis and New England are top 5; San Diego, Green Bay, Seattle, Denver, San Francisco are 15-19th; only Carolina, Cincinatti and New Orleans look like clean teams. So there is no real evidence that being penalized for cheating will actually stop you from winning.
