Oklahoma and Washington (where the two representatives are from) are home to two of the top five largest Native American populations in the US. They could be trying to further themselves (which every politician does), but they could also be actually representing their constituents for once instead of whoever lines their pockets.

P.S. For those of you who don't know, Congress uses committees. So while there are more pressing issues in terms of our economy, medical care, and etc., if you aren't on the committee (given to you by party leadership), then you cannot do much involving those issues.

The word Oklahoma comes from a Choctaw phrase which literally means "red people".

Why isn't that dude dealing with his own state's racist name first?

I'd love for Snyder to announce a presser for this, and say just that part about what Oklahoma means and it right out of there.

Probably because the word Oklahoma isn't used as an offensive term. I really don't care if the word is used or not, but I fully expect Snyder to be forced into changing the name eventually. This story is becoming too mainstream for him to continue to fight it.

There have been several studies done by Universities and for the most part...a majority doesn't find it offensive.

The best way to settle this has been the way college teams have done it. If it is a direct homage to a local tribe, you need their permission (see: Seminoles). If it is a generic name, the decision is really on the University.

If someone told me I seemed like an Oklahoman, there would be trouble.
