Without hindsight, this seemed like a really good signing for the Flyers. Philly media crucified him and he wasn't mentally tough enough to get over it.

One wonders if he is on his way to the KHL.

Seems that way. What NHL team would take a chance on him at this point? Coyotes again? Islanders?

Get him into another market like Phoenix where the pressure won't be on him. He could be a cheap one-year signing for a team looking for a veteran in net, provided he doesn't bolt for the KHL, which is also a possibility.

Florida wants to give the reins to Markstrom and they also have Clemmensen signed as a backup for another year. I doubt they want to add a guy who could potentially upset the good thing they have going with Markstrom.

I wasn't a huge fan of the signing when it happened, wanted them to roll with Bobrovsky and let him take his punches along the way...Flyers beat writers being a bunch of classless assholes posting a log of negative shit about Bryz after the fact.

                    This is ridiculous.

It never seemed like a good signing. They gave him a lucrative 9-year deal with no competition for his services. It was an astoundingly stupid contract that never had to happen. I agree the Flyers needed an elite #1 goalie, and Bryzgalov might have been that for Phoenix, but the Flyers didn't need to give him a 9-year deal ... no other team would have ever offered the same.

The contract was incredibly stupid and made to seem even dumber when the team and HBO saw how Bryzgalov would react to being in a hockey mad market.

My guess is Bryzgalov will return to elite status, but only with a Phoenix-like team ... no media attention, little fan attention - a place where he just plays and nothing else matters.

The long deal made sense in the "cap circumvention era" and gave them what everyone assumed would be a top #1 goalie at a reasonable $5.6m cap hit. Having made a Cup Final and filled up with players in their prime or veteran years, and only having Leighton/Boucher and totally unproven rookie goalie to backstop them, I can't fault the Flyers for making a big offer for a goalie that you and others may say was "elite status" at the time.

But they were competing with no one for his services. They could have easily offered him a lucrative 2-year deal and that would have been enough.
