Retired Giants star Harry Carson, who is now the executive director of the Fritz Pollard Alliance, told the Daily News that a rule allowing officials to penalize players for using the N-word is “already in place.”

The word is considered unsportsmanlike conduct, Carson said.

“I think there is going to be a higher emphasis placed on it,” Carson said, adding that his group met with league officials last season to discuss use of the epithet.

The NFL is throwing a flag on use of the N-word.

In a groundbreaking move, the league is expected to agree to start penalizing players 15 yards for uttering the racial slur on the field, according to the group that monitors diversity in the league.

John Wooten, chairman of the Fritz Pollard Alliance, said the rule will likely be adopted by the NFL competition committee at March’s owners meetings.

“I will be totally shocked if the competition committee does not uphold us on what we’re trying to do,” Wooten said, according to CBSSports.com. “We want this word to be policed from the parking lot to the equipment room to the locker room.

If the refs follow this new rule to the letter, then they'll be handing out 15 penalties a game to black guys screwing around for every one racial outburst they flag.

Don't see how the union could get beind this without equal specifications for racial terms toward whites, Asians, hispanics and every other ethnicity that might step foot onto an NFL field.

If it is equally spread across all racist terms then no troubles.

I get the theory behind it but let it be a team decision. If an owner/coach wants his players to show class then have at it. Fine players internally not reprimand the team with a penalty in game.

Essentially, the Steelers banned it, and the players enforced it for a little while, but it just eventually seeped back into the Locker Room. It's a tough thing to change. It could be possible to ban it when tossed around as a taunt or an insult to another player, rather than all together.
