Davidson in 2012 AZ Fall League Game
Comes up to the plate. Struck out looking.
Pops out.
About the 5th inning, playing 3rd base… really hot smash to his throwing hand 2 hopper with fire on it to his right maybe 1 step away. Davidson tries to back hand the ball cross body with his glove down low. Ball hits a rock and bounces up and hits Davidson’s cheekbone. It sounds like an aluminum bat hitting a ball. The ball caroms away to towards the second baseman going up about 20 feet in the air and dying on the infield grass. Davidson is sprawled out in the basepath. Matty Williams runs out to him and it took Davidson about 5 minutes just to sit up.
Well, I had earlier seen Kurt Gibson and Kevin Towers standing behind home plate on the walkway about 30 feet away. As Davidson was falling to the ground and the ball was floating towards second, I turned to see Gibsons and KT’s reaction. Gibby looked concerned but Towers rolled his eyes, shook his head and turned his back on the field and then Gibson turned his back and they huddled up.
I had a sneaky feeling at that moment, they thought that Davidson did not have the reactions nor glove to play the hot corner. I later heard a rumor that the following Spring (last March), Davidson demanded to be traded after learning that he wouldn’t play on the big club. (He had torn up Reno the prior summer).
Well, looks like that snippet of a memory might have just been another small reason KT pulled the trigger on Davidson. Poor kid didn’t play again that fall and took a month and a half to recover from that awful infield smash.
