just came from the noon showing of 42. All in all a solid movie. I honestly didnt know the entire story about how he came into major league baseball but the movie did not do a good showing of it. A few people leaving the show said " so they just drew his name out of all the other negro players in the negro leagues"

Other then that it did show the hardships he faced making his way through life both on and off the field.
 
Seeing it this weekend? The two biggest projects I've ever done were about Jackie Robinson. I'm hoping I can enjoy the movie despite some historical errors.

Breaking it down briefly...

Wendell Smith, a black sportswriter essentially passed Jackie Robinson's name to Branch Rickey. Once Rickey got to Brooklyn (after being the St. Louis GM for years in the 30s), he set his sights on integrating baseball (the reason itself is always up for debate, seems most believe he had his heart set on breaking down the barrier for humane reasons first and baseball reasons second).

So Rickey sent 3 different scouts to look at Robinson, none of the 3 knew about the other two and Jackie didn't know about the whole lot of them. They all reported back positives about him as a ballplayer and Rickey looked further into his background and personality back in California (where he grew up).

Then in the summer of 1945, Rickey sent for Robinson and thats when they first met to discuss his plans.

I didnt know that much about him, other then he was the first black man to play major league baseball. I should have read some stuff before the movie, because I was one of those people thinking "holy fuck, three guys sitting around a table looking at player files and Rickey says - here is the one,Jack Robinson."

that kinda shit on the movie movie for me the rest of the way plus I was so excited to see this one. When I saw the preview months ago I was all in on it. So maybe I was expecting a little too much.

But again, dont get me wrong, still an enjoyable movie over 2 hours
 
Decent movie, not great, but not bad. It does a good job portraying Jackie and showing the hardships he had to endure. Such an important story that people should see.

Yeah, it's hard to fit a person's life and all of those details into a movie and keep it under 3 hours. I haven't seen the movie, yet. The impression you're giving pretty much aligns with what I've heard from critics and Dodger/Baseball sources who've seen it.

I'm not going in with expecations that this will be the best movie ever, but I'm hoping that they do the story justice. It would be great if this movie became a classic baseball flick - but I'm not going to arrive at the theaters expecting it to be.
 
LOL I saw this on the MLB network earlier today

the original Jackie Robinson movie starring Robinson himself. Interesting that racism was still alot worse back then and they use Jackie to play himself in a movie. Its Obviously very basically done but it is what it is for its time..a simple light hearted movie making its little point without really attacking an issue
