The Oakland Raiders and Sebastian Janikowski reached agreement Tuesday morning on the richest kicking contract in NFL history, according to league sources.

Janikowski will sign a four-year, $16 million contract that includes $9 million in guaranteed money, sources said. It also removes arguably the top kicker from the free-agent market. Other notable free-agent kickers are expected to include Cincinnati's Shayne Graham and the New York Jets' Jay Feely.

In 10 seasons, all with the Raiders, Janikowski has scored 1,000 points, converting 78.4 percent of his field goal attempts (229 of 292) and 313 of 316 extra-point attempts. He scored 95 points in 2009.

Just saw on the SVP show that between the Raider's punter and kicker, they have $18M of guaranteed money locked up. I know that Lechler is probably the best punter in the league... but $18M for your P/K combined?

Well the Punter is gonna be out their every 4 plays and their Kicker is probably gonna provide 99% of their points so I don't see why not

In all seriousness I remember when he first came into the league all the worries about his character and if he would be able to keep his nose clean. Credit him with turning it around off the field the last 5-6 years and doing well.

Gotta love have the Raiders parade him out there from any and all distances to kick. He's a kicker that when you look at him accuracy numbers don't do him justice because they have him try so many long attempts.

The guy attempts 5 50+ yarders a year on average(49 on his career). One year he tried 11.

Robbie Gould has attempted 5 50+ his entire career.

Kaeding has tried 13 his entire career.

Mikey V tried 22 his entire career.

for all the talk of QB this and RB/ WR that-

kicking is still a very unique and important part of the game. Its specialized now. Years ago it was the best all around athlete that did the kicking- sometimes the QB was the kicker as well.

they are highered to do one thing and one thing only. Score points. They should be well compensated.

recent- Saints- Hartley- beats Vikings- keeps Saints within reach of Super Bowl win against Colts.

if Adam Vin-noug-atieri doesnt hit certain field goals, one third of the discusions about Brady dont happen here.

Mark Moseley- a major reason the Redskins had the season they had to get to and win the Super Bowl.

its taken for granted as difficult as it is. The snap, the hold, the connection of foot to ball all have to be executed near perfectly for a great result.


they are hired sharp shooters / assassins and deserve to be compensated well.

having a great special teams/ kicker is usually what gets you the edge in games/wins/playoffs etc
