Alex Semin to Carolina

The Carolina Hurricanes announced on Thursday afternoon that they have agreed to terms on a one-year contract with the free agent forward on a deal that will pay him $7 million.

Constant 1 year deals for this guy make his options always wide open every year it's kinda crazy.

I still say 7mil a year for him is pretty good even though caps fans seem to dislike him.

On the first day of FA Frenzy, TSN's panel covered Semin, and Marc Crawford called him a "complete loser with no character" and Pierre McGuire called him the "ultimate coach killer." The guy just isn't a good locker room guy, and just seems to have his head everywhere but on the ice.

I agree with some of it, specifically about Westbrook and a player who works hard. The opposite is true about Semin, and that is something that trickles down through the clubhouse in a negative way. Even when the Caps were winning and things were going great, Semin would disappear from the stat sheet for games at a time.

Most Washington fans have nothing good to say about him in recent seasons. I admit there is a small part of me that wants him to do well, but it's always going to be tempered by the "what if" with him. You can't do much with lazy, unmotivated people. I don't count on them to produce much.

Your first mistake is listening to Marc Crawford and Pierre McGuire. If they were so great at evaluating players, maybe they'd still have jobs in the league.

Just validating what every Caps fan has seen the past couple seasons out of Semin :smug:

He's obviously talented and will put pucks in the net, but his attitude, work ethic, and toughness will always be a question.

Kind of reminds me of Hossa as he bounced around a bit before settling down in Chicago.

A lot of Sharks fans were hoping they'd land Semin due to his speed but I am more in favor of Doan. Semin is in the same mold as Havlat and Marleau. Highly skilled players that disappear from games when they aren't scoring goals. I like players built like Dustin Brown, Zach Parise, Ryan Callahan, Michael Richards, etc. Those guys contribute in a number of different ways and their effort is never questioned.

At least Carolina didn't do a crazy Bryzgalov thing and give a guy who had no market a crazy 9-year contract. They correctly gave him one year with crazy money. If it works, great. If it doesn't, nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Other than the money and Semin's attitude, it does give Carolina a good one two punch now. Looking at it from a pure hockey sense, if Semin can score his 30 goals a year, Carolina could be in a good spot to make a playoff spot this year. If they want to keep the Staal brothers on two different lines, then you have Staal-Semin and Staal-Skinner. Though I suspect it will be more Staal-Staal-Semin since they are paying Ruutu 4.75M, and he isn't going to sit on the third line. Even then, you have a second line of Jokinen - Ruute - Skinner. Not to bad, but I think with the semin signing you need to split the Staal brothers up and have them centre their own lines. Ruutu may get shoved to a wing now.
