...am I the only one that thinks Tom Brady's success wasn't all that much Tom Brady, but a lot of Bill Belichick?

I'm watching Matt Cassel right now, I know they haven't won yet, but a 4th quarter comeback seems to be in the works. Tom started his career the same way Cassel is now, and I'll go so far as to say Cassel has progressed faster because New England is already back in the spread offense.

Brady was a no-name quarterback from Michigan, who played behind Drew Henne his whole career. Cassel the same, playing behind Leinart.

How much stock do you actually put into these quarterbacks? The more I watch Cassel, the more I think, "Bill Belichick can make a quarterback."

Is this seriously a thread?

There's dozens of NFL QB's who can throw for 400 yards when down 24-6 and passing 50+ times.

Here's a few differences:

1) Brady can actually hit a pass over 15 yards
2) Brady doesn't let his offense score 6 points in 29 minutes
3) Brady has pocket presence and avoids sacks/makes great reads in the pocket
4) Brady can hit almost any throw he wants
5) Brady once beat Chuck Norris in a game of Roundhouse.
6) Billy Volek and others have thrown for almost 400 yards in one game. One game.

The Jets played a horrendous defensive scheme in the second half that left everyone outside of Moss open. The Patriots were down, the Jets couldn't get any pressure, and 50 throws later Cassel has racked up 400 yards.

Let's not forget the fact that this team could easily be 10-0 if Mr. Brady was healthy.

When he first came into the league I called Brady a system QB, and then I saw just how good he was once he matured and learned how to throw the deep ball.

Obviously Cassel in his first year > Brady's first year, but Brady now is 1000x better than Brady back then. Plus Brady had Troy Brown as his #1 target back then while Cassel has Moss, Welker, and other targets opening up space.

What I'm saying is Bill Belichick deserves a lot more credit for Tom Brady's development as a quarterback, and Matt Cassell is proving it. You cannot deny that Matt Cassell is thriving right now.

This team would OBVIOUSLY be better with Brady, because Brady is a proven pro-bowler and an outstanding player. But to say the Patriots have blind luck finding TWO random quarterbacks that hardly played in college (or didn't play at all) would be ludacris.

So really, how much stock do you put into these guys being virtually unknown in college and having success in the NFL? Are the Patriots really this lucky?

I first thought that Brady was a system quarterback, then he developed on his own and proved he had his own talents. Now, Cassell is a "system" quarterback. There's a method to Belichick's madness. He may be a defensive guy, but he can coach a quarterback.

i feel what your saying, Cassel is statistically(sp?) better then brady's first year, so whos to say he cant produce the same, Brady missed some throws at first too, and is way more experienced this kid might be dangerous if given a chance down the road...Brady's team was more talented i think ovr, not at WR but ovr it was a healthier team who knows only time can tell

the system definetly helps, but brady has a higher skill level so to speak. on that one on moss had cassell threw a line drive instead of a lob, brady would have had 6 no questions. maybe matt can get better, but vrady juts has better vision and mechanics, he always has. Just think of it this way: if brady was able to play would cassell be in the game? When bledose got better they didnt pull brady...

thats true but Brady wasnt tossin perfect bombs his first year starting either remember he was that skinny lil kid from michigan. And good point about how when Bledsoe got healthy but it was a completely differnt situation. Bledsoe was struggling a lil bit anyways and gettin older, so the Pats kept a 20 somethin year old Brady rather then 30 somethin Bledsoe in that situation. Right now Brady isnt old or wearing down so even if Cassel brings them a Super Bowl he wont take Brady's place because Brady is the franchise QB in his prime, Bledsoe was done for. I am not saying Cassel is better in any way shape or form, i do agree that the system seems to help a lot, the system got Brady comfortable enpugh to start flingin the ball around in time Cassel will prov he could be a starter on most teams and since hes a free agent this year i see him making around 5-8 million a year

That throw to Moss to bring the game into OT may have been one of the best throws I have ever seen in my entire lifetime. It couldn't have been thrown any better.

yeah that was an incredible throw, on the run too. Ty Law had great coverage on Moss too Cassel could of only thrown it in that exact spot... I dont think anybody is taking anything away from Brady at all...but i dont think Brady makes that throw Cassels mobility stopped that sack and I think Brady would of stepped up in the pocket and looked elswhere.

Not only is Brady helpful to the offense but he can help the defense as well by having long drives on offense to give the defense a rest. Too may times this year has cassel gone 3 and out because he cant connect on third and long. Brady would also hit Moss deep when hes wide open 99 out of 100 times.Something Cassel hasnt been able to do all year.

its the system. the spread offense is an offense that is hard to contain. lets not mention the preasence of wes welker and randy moss. although cassell and moss are never on the same page, teams still scheme for him. and welker, hes a qbs best friend, the ultimate checkdown machine. throw him the ball on 5 and 7 yard routes, and he will make you look better than you actually are.

Duh.... Brady is already synced with this Offense. His WR and OL know his tendencies. He (Brady) knows the tendencies of them. They have timing down and the whole 9. Having Moss on your team means "throw as hard as you can downfield and you have a TD 70% of the time."

Cassel does not have the timing that Brady developed over the years. That's the problem with back ups.

I mean com'on... and you seem like the type of person that says Brady is better than Peyton. And if you look at Brady 50 Td's you'll see he played the whole season and they threw the Ball 80+% of the time... Brady also threw the ball round 571 times. Now just to throw this out there.... When Peyton threw 48, his RB still made 1000 yards, he sat out the last game where the back up threw 2 Td's and check this... Peyton threw like 496 times that season....

My point? If you throw the ball that much you're either going to throw a lot of picks or Td's. Luckly for Brady last year he had 3 fast ass mothafuckas for WR's. Moss w/ a good QB is unstoppable, Stallworth is subpar but was still a threat, and nobody can check a slot man who's also a return man in Wes. No LB can check him so that was open plus he had an alright TE. There was no reason for their passing offense to fail and I guess they proved it would not. Of course until it mattered Week 19...
