The Cubs have acquired Dan Haren from the Angels in exchange for Carlos Marmol, confirms Bruce Levine of ESPNChicago (via Twitter). The deal was first reported by Yancen Pujols of El Caribe (via Twitter, Spanish link).

The deal brings an end to an eventful week of rumors surrounding Haren, who was unlikely to see his $15.5MM option exercised by the Angels. It's likely that Haren's option for 2013 has been exercised, but there is no official word on that yet. We learned today that both the Cubs and Red Sox were in on the 32-year-old.

Marmol is entering the final year of his contract which will pay him $9.8MM. The 30-year-old turned in a 3.42 ERA with 11.7 K/9 and 7.3 BB/9 through 61 appearances last season. Marmol has spent his entire seven-year big league career with the Cubs and has a 3.38 ERA with 11.7 K/9 and 6.0 BB/9 during that stretch.

I believe I had this one and the Earvin Santana move happening in that "What does your team need to do this off-season?" thread. Nice to see the Angels front office already taking my advice even though I won't be able to work there for at least another year.

Hopefully this means that we are pretty sure Greinke is coming back but even if he isn't Harden wasn't worth $16M that we would have had to pay him next year.

Now if we could just sucker anyone into taking that terrible CJ Wilson contract off of our books...

This is a horrendous trade for the Angels. You have to get more back for Haren than Marmlol, who is flat out terrible.

If my choices were Marmlol or eat the $16m, I eat the money. Getting marginal level prospects from somebody would have been better.

You shouldn't be bummed, you should be relieved you didn't end up with Marmol. You'd hate him before the end of April, he isn't the answer. Now you can find another trade partner and get a more serviceable RP or some farm hands if you find a team willing to take on the salary (Yankees seem like a good fit to me).

I'm just leery about chasing a ton of FAs this year again. We really had no money to do anything in the draft last year with the way the new CBA is structured and after the Greinke trade our farm system is bottom 10 in the league if I'm a total homer about it, more likely bottom 4.

Marmol was at least a body... I wasn't in love with paying him $9.5 mil either but I doubt we find a new trade partner before the deadline on the option passes.

Weren't the Royals scared off by the high asking price for Haren? I am sure that was with the Angels covering some salary, but as you said, this is Carlos Marmlol. Something's not right.

I see what you are saying, but you have to field a team. You are talking about replacing nearly 600 innings.

I get dumping Santana because you have to sign Greinke. I know Haren is history (although I don't agree with it myself), but I wouldn't trade Wilson. That's playing with fire.

The team is fine, they came on towards the end of the season and were playing Vernon Wells instead of Mike Trout for a month.

I don't get this theme that they have to tear everything apart and shed payroll all of a sudden, as if they won 75 games.

Warner seems to think that Haren still has value, which is weird considering how anti Roy Oswalt he was prior to the 2012 season. Haren's drop in velocity has been even more significant then Oswalt's.
