Are QBs the only position worth drafting #1 overall?

Im at work on my phone, so i cant do the research, but are non QBs worth taking #1 overall? Has there been a non QB that was drafted #1 that was worth it? Is it better to reach on a QB?

Were Mario Williams, Jake Long, etc worth the #1 pick? Did they have that much impact on their franchise?

With QB being the most important position on the team, there is a high likelihood that the teams that performed the worst (and consequentially have a higher draft pick) were deficient in that area. I think that is the reason that most #1 picks are at the QB position. Occasionally through trade or injury, teams have the #1 overall pick for a different reason and then it is logical to take a player other than a QB. I do think Clowney is the best physical talent in the draft this year and even though the Texans could use a franchise QB, none of those in the draft are good enough to offset the havoc that Clowney and Watts would bring to their defensive front next season.

I think Williams and Long were good players for their teams...don't know if they were #1 overall worthy, but I am looking at the list of #1 overalls and there are a ton of mediocre/bad players on it. Troy Aikman was a #1 overall in 1989 and he wound up in the HOF, but after him you have Peyton Manning and maybe Orlando Pace being the only HOFers. Perhaps Andrew Luck. Most of the #1 overall picks have been unspectacular at best.

Historically speaking, there are far more non-QB HOFers from the #1 overall pick spot than HOF QBs. The only #1 overall HOF QBs are Aikman, Elway, and Terry Bradshaw.

I think the game is evolving where you can get a decent QB outside of the #1 spot. Unless it's a standout future probowler/hof'er.

To the original question, no not anymore. With the pay scale graded down for rookies since the last CBA, it males much more sense to draft the best player available and not necessarily a QB.

No...There is always a risk with every pick but the monetary risk of a #1 draft pick is the highest. So drafting a non QB #1 would probably cost you the least amount of money.

But all in all if see a dominant kid with NFL like abilities I would consider him. Problem is that the draft is so much more complex than this blanket question.

I would take a HB, OL, DL, WR, TE, QB #1....I would question some of the other positions. Unless there was a kicker that could kick 80 yard FGs or punt the ball 100 yards.

Out of the 32 starting QBs in the league only Romo and Brady were drafted past the 3rd round. You have to draft high and if you can get the best QB in class I say you go for it most years.
With a DE you can end up with Bruce Smith or Courtney Brown. A serviceable QB you can work around (see 49ers) a serviceable DE is still usually a bust. You have to put up exceptional numbers at DE for it to be considered worth it.
OT to me is the safest. Harder to get a bust as you can easily shift to the interior and have a not worry position. Even if they are elite you end up in a good draft position next year. Where as a "decent" QB will lift the franchise enough to put you in the middle of the pack for years not really giving you a chance to accumulate another top 10 talent.

I dont think its fair to judge by SuperBowls. These teams have the number 1 pick for a reason. The odds they are one pick away from a turned around franchise is super rare. Luck/Newton/Eli/Peyton turned out very well. Of the 10 last no1 QBs only two are legit busts (Carr/Russell). I think most franchises improve upon themselves and thats the point of the QB. To give your team a sudden jolt to legitimacy.

To be direct no its certainly not the only position. I definitely think its the one you should weight the heaviest if you have a need. Dream scenario is always someone desperate enough to give you a future top 10 to trade down where you can still get the top WR/OT/DL in the draft.
