1. Detroit Lions: Matthew Stafford, QB, Georgia
The lions are a rebuilding organization and it all starts at quarterback. He is the best available quarterback and even though underclassmen quarterbacks coming out don’t have a great success rate Stafford may be an exception with his 33 career starts.
2. St. Louis Rams: Jason Smith, OT, Baylor
There are a lot of different ways the Rams could go with this pick. Wide reciever because Torry Holts career is on the downside so Crabtree could be in the mix for the second overall selection. He would also definitely help spark an offense ranked at 27th. Now of course with a defensive head coach Aaron Curry, the best defensive player in this years draft, is also a possibility to be selected here.
But i think that with the offensive line being atrocious the past couple of years and with the injury proned Orlando Pace at 33 years old and a pretty big contract Smith could be the man to replace the future hall of famer.
3. Kansas City Chiefs: Aaron Curry, OLB, Wake Forest
The Chiefs defense was ranked 31st, so without a doubt they'll go defense with this pick. They were last in the league in sacks with 10 so many would predict them picking a defensive end, such as Texas' Brian Orakpo here. I would disagree with that. Glenn Dorsey will be better season two and they'll be healthier at the defensive end spot. Defensive end is definitely a need though, but for a later round.
I think the Chiefs will pick Aaron Curry here because he is the best defensive player in this years draft. He can play all three linebacker positions so that would give the Chiefs flexibility. Curry would be surrounded by linebackers Derrick Johnson and Donnie Edwards and could quite possibly form one of the best linebacking cores in the NFL.
4. Seattle Seahawks: Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech
The Seahawks don't have a #1 reciever and really need one. Almost all of their starting offense was injured at some point last year so offense looks to be the pick here. Crabtree looks just too good for the Seahawks to pass up.
5. Cleveland Browns: Brian Orakpo, DE/OLB, Texas
What amazes me is that the Cleveland Browns pass defense was ranked 14th and yet they didn't have a pass rush all season and recorded only 17 sacks. With a pass rushing outside linebacker such as Brian Orakpo the Browns defense could be quite dangerous.
6. Cincinnati Bengals: Eugene Monroe, OT, Virginia
The Bengals offensive line needs some help. They started to gel at the end of last year blocking in the run game. But quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick didn't have much time to pass the ball last year and pass protection is a very important asset to the Bengals if they hope to win a division with the Ravens and Steelers defense in it and then quarterback Carson Palmer coming off of an injury. There are also reports coming out of Cincinnati that offensive tackle, Levi Jones could be cut so they'll need someone to start in his place.
7. Oakland Raiders: Andre Smith, OT, Alabama
The Raiders offensive tackles were horrid in 2008. Jamarcus Russell needs more talent around him to develop. Kwame Harris, the bust in San Francisco ended up being a bust in Oakland too. He was terrible in pass protection and also led the league in false start penalties. Cornell green was second in the league in false start penalties and is better suited to be a backup. Mario Henderson played well and they need another good tackle.
8. Jacksonville Jaguars: Jeremy Maclin, WR, Missouri
The Jaguars don’t have many productive wide receivers. They have many tall possession receivers but Maclin could be a very good contrast to those receivers. He is very fast and getting a good receiver like Maclin could be another way to help out the running game by stretching the field vertically.
9. Green Bay Packers: Malcom Jenkins, CB, Ohio St.
Charles Woodson is 32 and Al Harris, coming off a spleen injury is 34. They need youth at cornerback and Jenkins looks to be the top cornerback prospect.
10. San Francisco 49ers: Michael Oher, OT, Ole Miss
With tackle Jonas Jennings on the back end of his career the 49ers will be looking tackle, Oher can be the tackle to replace him.
11. Buffalo Bills: Brandon Pettigrew, TE, Oklahoma State
Trent Edwards played poorly at the end of last year and drafting a very good tight end like Brandon Pettigrew will help him plenty. Pettigrew is not a burner at the tight end position but that looks to be his only downside. He is a big target and a great run blocker which makes him very worthy of this pick.
12. Denver Broncos: BJ Raji, NT, Boston College
The Broncos have cleaned house defensively and with Mike Nolan being brung in to run his 3-4 scheme they must address their number one need at nose tackle after releasing Dewayne Robertson.
13. Washington Redskins: Robert Ayers, DE, Tennessee
Even with the trade for Jason Taylor the Redskins struggled to get a pass rush. They need an upgrade over Taylor who got 3.5 sacks in 13 games and Carter who got 4 sacks in 16 games. This will also give them depth and make the #4 defense even better.
14. New Orleans Saints: Brian Cushing, OLB, USC
The defense has not performed well even with all the off-season acquisitions of last year. They did have injuries but it makes sense to me to upgrade the outside linebacker spot. If the secondary could stay healthy, and with Cushing here, the Saints should be legitimate Superbowl contenders in possibly the hardest division in the 2009 season.
15. Houston Texans: Everette Brown, DE, Florida St.
The Texans defense played poorly in 2008. Bringing in another defensive end along with their new defensive coordinator could put a lot of heat on opposing quarterbacks. Brown would play along with former first round picks Amobi Akoye, Travis Johnson, and Mario Williams. It would also make sense for the texans to select a cornerback here with the Texans slapping the franchise tag on Dunta Robinson.
16. San Diego Chargers: Ray Maualuga, ILB, USC
Many predict the Chargers to take a running back here but with Darren Sproles being franchise tagged and picking a running back here would be too much money to pay for one position are both good reasons against that decision. Tomlinsons and Sproles future is uncertain past this season but it looks as if the Chargers will eventually try to sign Sproles to a long term deal after the 2009 season to make him their eventual starter.
The Charges 25th ranked defense could use an upgrade at the inside lineback position. They don't have any real elite player at that position.
