Bad/Odd baseball players ranked highly in statistical catagories...

Was looking at some of Kerry Wood's career numbers and ran across this......

Oliver Perez is 8th all time in K/9.

Tim Lincecum is currently 4th.

Scott Kazmir and Dan Pleasac are 12th and 13th.

Dan Pleasac was also a top RP for almost two decades, and likely could have pitched two or three more effective seasons as a LOOGY.

I think it's fair to refer to "The Freak" as an odd baseball player, although this stat doesn't surprise me in the slightest.

Cole Hamels has a lower career WHIP over Jared Weaver, Roy Halladay and Justin Verlander.

^^ Really? As a Cole Hamels hater, a stat like that can really help me come around if Stan Kasten decides to throw cash at him this winter (I don't think it'll happen though). Buster Olney thinks the Dodgers will go after Hamels but Buster Olney is an idiot, so I take it with a healthy grain of salt.

I'm not the expert at baseball stats but this has more to do with those guys being AL pitchers(Halladay with 11 seasons in the AL under his belt) and most AL pitchers numbers will be higher in the AL(ERA, WHIP, etc.). Not discounting what Hamels is doing because he's an amazing pitcher. But I would be shocked if his numbers didn't go up a little if he switched over minus maybe that first year where teams are seeing him for the first time.

Just about any pitcher among the all time leaders in SO/9 doesn't surprise me that much. Since the 'roid era began, a side effect of more homers being hit is guys are striking out more also. A lot more. Look at the top 40 in that category. Except for a handful or so, all of them pitched in the 90s or later.

A bigger surprise to me is that Wood is 10th all time in fewest hits allowed/9 and Sid Fernandez is 3rd. Sid had a stretch where we was very good, but 3rd all time in that category? I couldn't have imagined that.

There are only two active pitchers above him- Mariano Rivera and Johan Santana, who actually posted better WHIPs in the AL than the NL. So it has something else to do with it than that.

I've been listening to Buster Olney for a long time. When he first started on Mike and Mike, he'd be on maybe once a week, and he'd say something interesting. Now it seems like he is on every day, and he's a fixture on ESPN TV shows, too. And most of what he says now is fucking ridiculous. Its like he went from "news reporter" to "trade rumor guy". He should work for ProFootballTalk.

The Padres have never been known to be a power hitting team, and combine that with the fact that none of the big sluggers they've had over the years spent all that much time with the franchise (Greg Vaugh, Adrian Gonzalez, Fred McGriff), and you get a wacky looking all time list that includes a failed middle infield prospect like Greene.
