Baseball Reference or FanGraphs

Which do you use more of/prefer?

I use Baseball Reference.

When I need some quick stats.. I go to BRef. I like thier layout a shit load more. FranGraphs has some great srticle and writing that I like to read, especially on the metric side of things but Bref to me is WAY more user freindly and I like the user interface more.

At times FG can feel like a clunk POS and look like a mess.

I have them both open in at least one tab at pretty much all times of the day. Depends on what you are looking for.

B-ref has a little bit easier organization if you just need quick back of the envelope #s, and obviously it's the preferred destination for historical stuff, but FG provides a lot of info that you just can't find at B-ref.

Don't see why any self-respecting baseball fan doesn't enjoy both of them though. Not like they are competing.

Depends what I'm looking for. If I'm going for a quick snapshot of a player or "hmm did Chili Davis really play for the Twins?" I use Baseball Reference.

If I'm trying to really look at the player, want to read up on his advanced stats I use FanGraphs.

I also subscribe to FanGraphs articles on Google Reader even though they aren't really the most well written.

Yeah I'd say I use FG more for predictive analysis of a current player, deciding if whatever he is doing is sustainable or whatever, but if it's looking back at a retired player obviously B-ref will give you the quicker snap shot.

I also like FG more for minor league guys due to B-Ref's annoying segregation of majors and minors.

I did forget to mention that. Almost all minor league players are looked up in FanGraphs.

For clarifiation BR uses Range Factor for defense while Fangraphs uses UZR as well as a few other smaller difference, this one is the most glaring.

I can't stand Range Factor, thus I tend to use Fangraphs WAR.

I don't mind fWAR but UZR is still wonky with me. I don't like that it basically uses FIP for pitcher WAR, as I think FIP is kind of silly (not the concept itself, just the actual need for an all encompassing metric which basically just tells you what you could get from per 9 rates).

Agreed but Range Factor is just really awful to me. UZR is wonky, no doubt but it's so far ahead of Range Factor. Using Range Factor in WAR to me is like using RBI in some advanced metric.

I pretty much only use fangraphs. The only thing that I don't like about fangraphs is if a player plays for two teams in a year, you can't see his individual stats for each team; only the yearly sum.

I asked NAHSTE this last week. He replied "Fangraphs is still my first destination usually. HardballTimes and BeyondTheBoxscore do a lot of cool statistical analysis as well but usually FG puts everything in the most digestible format."
