Bears Jerry Angelo's 10 best/10 worst draft picks

I present to you Jerry Angelo’s 10 best and 10 worst draft picks.

A few notes before we start:
*I did not include Angelo’s 2010 draft, but that draft appears to be horrible. In general, Angelo’s drafts have gotten worse over the years.

*I was amazed at how many draft picks the Bears have spent on defensive backs the last few years.

*In the “worst” category, I just ran out of time/effort and left off everyone from Angelo’s terrible 2002 draft (first 3 picks, Colombo, Roe Williams, Terrance Metcalf).

Best
1) Lance Briggs – superstar player in the 3rd round
2) Alex Brown – solid starter for many years, taken in 4th
3) Charles Tillman – 2nd round pick has been a big contributor
4) Matt Forte – would be even better with surrounding talent. 2nd round
5) Devin Hester – dynamic playmaker, ok WR. 2nd round
6) Chris Harris – great value for 6th round pick
7) Danieal Manning – 2nd round pick still making plays
8) Johnny Knox – a starter for a 5th rounder
9) Mark Anderson – here is where I ran out of players. The Bears got a great season out of this 5th rounder.
10) Kyle Orton – NFL starting QB for a 4th rounder.

Worst
1) Michael Haynes – 14th overall pick, not a football player
2) Dan Bazuin – 2nd round pick, training camp cut
3) Cedric Benson – 4th overall pick, did very little for the Bears
4) Chris Williams – 14th overall pick, already on his 3rd position
5) Jarron Gilbert – 3rd rounder was first Bears pick in 2009, had a cup of coffee
6) Juaquin Iglesias – for a team that needed WR help, Iglesias was a 3rd round bust
7) Mark Bradley – for a team that needed WR help, Bradley was a 2nd round bust
8) Dusty Dvoracek – 3rd rounder went from college to the IR
9) Garrett Wolfe – decent ST, bad RB for this 3rd rounder
10) Tank Johnson – 2nd round was much too high for this head case.

Hester was a 2nd round pick but wasn't he their first pick that season? In retrospect, he turned out to be worth a 2nd round pick but at the time, you could ask "Why are the Bears drafting a specialist with their 1st pick?"

Danieal Manning was the first player taken by the Bears in the 2006 draft in the 2nd round. Hester was taken later on in the 2nd round since we had 2 picks in the 2nd.

Nathan Vasher gave us some pretty good years for a 4th rounder.. Zach Bowman also pretty solid value as a 5th rounder.

Nate was a Pro Bowler, too, IIRC. At least one year, anyways.

Vasher was a pretty good pick. Much like Mark Anderson, even for all his later faults he gave the Bears a great season. He probably would have been a better choice than Orton.

Bowman has solid value, but IMO Angelo has become the GM that just drafts mediocre players to replace the current mediocre players on the roster. You could probably make the argument that even the Knox pick isn't all that great...he only excels because Angelo's other WR picks have been so terrible.

That was my initial reaction to Knox being on the list.

He's a speed guy that can't run routes and has trouble understanding the offense. The Bears already had that in Hester.

The best WR on the roster is more than likely Earl Bennett.

Greg Olsen was a solid pick for JA too.

I'd move Anderson off the list for sustained production reasons and put Olsen ahead of Orton an Knox. I'm not the biggest Manning fan either, but not sure if I'd slide Olsen ahead of him just because for as bad as Manning is at safety he's a pretty good returner.

Heres what i dont get. Why you continue to point out the obvious? And I disagree with this years draft being terrible. Carimi and Pae (sp) are very solid picks and one will be in Chicago for double digit years.

Chris Williams will be a serviceable G. Dusty was good just couldnt stay healthy. Same as Tommie. And youre wrong about Tank. Because the SB year, and when he was able to play next to Tommie consistently, Tank was a handful.

Also, Colombo is doing fine in Dallas. Good pick by Jerry, just bad general managing after that. Colombo wasnt bad, he was hurt. Nobody bemoaned him when they cut him. He got healthy and played fine.

Cedric Benson turned out to be a decent NFL running back. Jerry's problem wasnt Ced, although his off the field stuff didnt help him, it was how good Thomas Jones was playing. Had that situation played out differently Ced would not be as hated in Chicago.

So Im kinda agreeing with you. Although, I think you tried to hard. All you really had to do to make this point that you have already made before, and a a point all Bears fans already know....was just show his 1st round pick track record. Nobody can say shit to that.

I said I didn't include 2010's draft (last year's) because its too early to judge. I didn't even consider using the 2011 draft, because the players have yet to play a down (I leave judging drafts before the players play to guys like Mel Kiper).

My takes:

Williams is terrible. He is a very bad guard. You don't need to waste your 14th overall pick on a bad guard. So its a terrible pick.

Dvoracek was injured coming out of college. Angelo rolled the dice and lost. A bad pick.

Harris was very good for the Bears but then he got injured and worn down. Not a great pick, not a bad pick. Thats why he's not on either list.

Tank was a good player, but again he had red flags coming out of college, and the Bears got a couple good years out of him but eventually had to get rid of him. Not good enough for a 2nd round pick, IMO.

The Benson pick was remarkable just for the fact that the Bears already had Thomas Jones, and Benson was the #4 overall pick. I can't remember the last time a #4 overall RB wasn't a starter in his rookie year (maybe Curtis Enis?).

Thats not the whole story. People claimed that Angelo could draft defense and could find gems in the middle rounds. He's had numerous, total washouts in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. His defensive picks have been questionable, and his DB picks have been abysmal.
