Once you've watched it have a quick look/consideration of your film library and consider how accurate this test is. Of my entire rottentomatoes rated films 4/67 would pass the test.

So I was asking you to explain what this 10 minutes is about, but that's beyond your current rage fit to share.

The test is simple, does a film have a section of dialogue in which two female characters discuss anything other than men. She notes that hardly any of the films currently up for Oscars pass the test.

I then looked at my library on rottentomatoes and realized that hardly any of those films passed the test either, which surprised me. Why is it that even in films which are meant to be targeted at both male and female viewers that women only seem to exist in the plot because of men?

She also has an interesting video series called tropes vs. women, where she argues that you can fit almost every female character into one of seven plot roles, all of which serve to advance the male character.

So it is feminist crap :troll:, but she has a very valid point if you're not some modern day caveman (aka the MMA crowd).

To film a woman playing something outside of these molds would be taking a chance, which we all know is something the entertainment industry does not. I'm sure the average movie goer would be confused as hell by a female character who didn't fill the typical role, their brains wouldn't know how to compute the performance.

I think part of it is that even when a woman takes a prominent role in a story, they seem to have an entourage of male characters. I can't think of many films with a primary female character where there are secondary female characters of any significance at all.

It's definitely something I hadn't ever considered prior to watching some of her videos.

While we're in the middle of the climax of the story, lets have a minute long conversation that has nothing to do with the two main characters. Good idea, that'll be a great way to kill the tension....


To make it worse, she answers her own "test". She references Black Swan, The Kids Are Alright, and Winter's Bone. It's simple, if you want two women to talk about anything other then men...then watch a movie where a men isn't the main character. Want a movie where black characters don't talk about white people? Watch a movie completely centered around blacks.

So for any story to have any reason whatsoever to include even the slightest bit of non-masculine dialogue it has to be a (very rare) story which is completely centred around female characters. It's just incredibly contrived that women despite always being included in the characters, have no actual bearing on a story.
