Dustin Reader, 14, told News 5's Karin Johnson that he got the helmet shaved into his hair because he's a huge fan of the football team.This schedule will run from November 16th through December 17th, 2009But administrators at Garfield Middle School were not a fan of the eighth grader's haircut. They said the haircut violated the school's code of conduct, which prohibits "extreme or distracting haircuts and hairstyles.""I didn't think he'd get in trouble for it," said Dustin's mother, Tina Wanamaker.A representative of the school confirmed that Dustin was suspended and will remain on suspension until his haircut is toned down.Reader's father said he has no plans to change the haircut.


"It is harmless. The Bengals are fielding a team that are winning this time and that hasn't been in a few years, so why not be happy and ecstatic and show your appreciation for the team," said James Reader. "It will grow out, but until it does its going to stay just the way it is."

Rules are rules and this one they had to know they were clearly violating. They allow this one kid the exception and before you know it they've got other kids getting crap shaved into their head and abusing the system. You set one rule you just cannot be leniant.

The rule is far too subjective and allows them to suspend kids for harmless things like this. How do you determine when a haircut becomes "extreme or distracting?"

When this little douche bag is 27 years old, still living in his room and unemployed he can thank his idiot parents for giving him such a horrible example to live by. I'm sure the school has no problems with long hair, etc. But shaving and coloring a Bengals helmet on your head? Fix your hair, go back to school, and stop making an ass out of yourself and your family.

Last I checked, students don't just completely ignore something crazy like this. It takes away their attention from their studies and apparently that goes against the objective of the school system.

Everyone obviously knows it's not a stupid fucking gang symbol haircut or a haircut with a hate message or anything like that but rules are rules and I'm pretty sure the school would rather not waste their precious fucking time holding student court (or whatever they do to decide these cases) over a haircut every time a student wants to challenge the rule.

As far as the topic at hand, I do not personally agree with the suspension but I agree that the school even did anything at all because like I said, regardless of the fact that this is a public domain, rules still need to be enforced and it is a waste of the school's time to decide each case individually. If they were to actually decide every single individual case, they would be spending more time doing that than teaching. Therefore, you set a blanket rule and regardless of the nature behind the offense (such as this kid and his parent's decision to allow him to get a haircut commemorating the Bengals), the school needs to enforce the rule.

Otherwise, you open the flood gates for more students to keep testing the rule.

And like I said, this may be a public domain but rules still need to be entact and enforced or else chaos ensues. Don't like the rules, go be homeschooled.

It not because of the "fucking haircut". It for the "fucking parents" that are keeping this home from school. U don't like the school's regulations? Go through the proper channels. Keeping this genius home playing call of duty all day I'm sure is 10x better than actually going to school.

Because maybe his parents think the rule is bullshit. Do you just submit to every rule regardless of whether or not you agree with it? Maybe this is their way of protesting, while at the same time teaching their kid to stand up for what he believes in. Them refusing to comply got this story more attention which may end up forcing the school to change the way it does things.

It's corny as hell for them to suspend a kid because his haircut distracts other students. How do they measure whether or not it does and to what extent?

I colored my hair a crazy color in the 6th grade. Sent me home and made me color it back to normal.

Its a silly rule. Distraction? How? It was no more than a, "Oh cool hair." And move the fuck on. Its not like people jumped out of their seats and ran to my desk to touch it.
