So, playing Diablo 3, it's gotten me thinking: what is the best 3rd game ever in a game franchise? I was going to say sequel, but top game lists generally have sequels at the top anyway, so I want to limit this to the 3rd "official" games...not expansions, but proper 3rd games.

Off the top of my head, I would give a list of Super Mario 3, A Link to the Past, Warcraft 3 & Mortal Kombat 3. Right now, I would add Diablo 3, but it's been too recent to add it, I think. It's definitely latched itself onto me at the moment, and will make this list eventually.

So, what do you have as the best 3rd game in a series you've ever played?
 
I preferred MK2 to MK3. I remember going into the arcade and just watching people play MK2 for hours on end.

Halo 3 was just amazing, it's still better than Reach IMO. They got rid of all the glitches and hacks that were in Halo 2, made better maps while still keeping them mainly symmetrical to keep everything fair once the game starts. They added the ability to create and share maps, save replays and download everything from bungie.net. Other shoots still haven't had a good forge/sharing/replay system that I've seen as H3 and Reach have implemented.

COD2 to 3 was pretty bad, felt like a totally different game. COD3 multiplayer wasn't bad, but the campaign which is COD's staple, and with 2's being so amazing it just felt like a step back and most were really dissapointed.
 
Not even a debate IMO. Super Mario Brothers 3 is still one of the best games of all-time.

GTA 3 is top3-5, but SMB3 is the pinnacle.

I don't know how it would rank in the grand scheme of things but I really liked Metal Gear Solid 3 (although I guess if you count the NES games, it's not the third).

-Battlefield 3 comes to mind as far as the one online FPS/Strategy game I value over all others right now due to being a console owner

Owning Bad Company 2 had a lot to do with picking it up but BF3 is the one game that I know will cause others to stop what their doing and play a few rounds.
 
Just throwing out Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast. Was on GC, XBox and PC, and is basically the third game in the Dark Forces series. Besides that game, it is ME3 and Halo 3 for me.

With that you can throw in Quake 3 and more importantly the engine that was created and how it basically changed the way all multiplayer games were done back in the early 00's.
