As someone who barely follows soccer, can somebody give me some perspective on this upset? Would this be like the Colts beating the Packers? More drastic? Less drastic? Unranked team beating LSU?

It's hard to compare because of the difference in the length of seasons and great contrast in what "champion" is in each sport. No one expects it obviously, especially at home; but upsets this big do happen two or three times per season.

This was a league game but if you've ever heard of the FA Cup it's likely because it is known for a tradition of lower league teams "giant-killing". So it's not all that uncommon.
 
I was so close to putting down 20 bucks on Blackburn just because I had a weird feeling. I even put the bet into my sportsbook que, and was 1 click away from doing it. :wtf:
 
The Colts beating the Packers is probably a good comparison. Man Utd aren't particularly great this year, compared to the team's they had in the past, but they're still the second best team in the league at worst. Blackburn on the other hand are absolutely dire, with a hopeless manager who lucked into the job. This happening at Old Trafford make it all the more shocking.

Like wr said, this won't go down as a legendary upset or anything, those really only happen in the FA Cup when teams from lower leagues are playing Prem clubs.
 
Id compare this to if the Colts beat the Saints in New Orleans. A pretty big upset, but nothing historical.
 
I'd say the Colts are a little bit outside of the scale. Perhaps Blackburn could be compared to the Vikings (with Peterson).
 
I don't think there's really any comparison to any North American sport that quite captures it in the right way. Soccer is just too different of a sport.

Big upsets do happen every season at least a few times - see Chelsea getting dumped by Aston Villa - but its not that common to see worst defeating first at home. And score 3 in the process. To me, that makes it a bit worse than most such upsets. Its not an all-timer because there isn't enough context - wasn't a cup match, didn't cost United a title or save Blackburn from relegation.

Nah. Sunderland are a lower-table team but not the clear worst side in the league, as Blackburn are. Two weeks ago, Blackburn lost at home to the other contenders for worst in the Prem, Bolton.

As well, getting a controversial last-second goal to take the win is more of stealing a win. Its still an upset but not as much as United losing to Blackburn.
