Brandon Flowers Released by Chiefs, signs with Chargers

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Cornerback Brandon Flowers, a six-year starter, was released by the Kansas City Chiefs on Friday. Flowers played in his first Pro Bowl game last season.

Flowers had been absent from the Chiefs' offseason practices this year, indicating he was unhappy playing in Kansas City. The Chiefs shifted him to nickel back last season in obvious passing situations.

Marcus Cooper, the third cornerback last season as a rookie, had replaced Flowers in the starting lineup during offseason practice.

Flowers had been a solid player for the Chiefs until 2013, when he had perhaps his worst season despite making the Pro Bowl. New general manager John Dorsey favors bigger cornerbacks and the 5-foot-9 Flowers struggled in the Chiefs' new defensive system, which often called for Flowers to cover bigger and more physical receivers.

"We appreciate Brandon's contributions to the team over the last six seasons," Dorsey said in a statement. "It's in the best interest of the club and the player to part ways at this time. We wish him nothing but the best as he continues his career."

Flowers commented on his release on Twitter.

Good Cut by the chiefs to save Cap. Clearly didnt fit the direction they were going in. Seems like teams want bigger physical corners now copying the Seahawks mold.

I'd say Atlanta should bring him in but I read that he didn't like playing inside last year. Too damn bad because in today's NFL that's where he fits the best imo. If he'd agree to lock down the nickel spot and leave Tru and Alford outside it'd be an excellent pick up for the Falcons. Pioli was the one who gave him that big money contract so I wouldn't be surprised if we bring him in regardless.

I agree, but it's also a bitch move to let him go this far into the off-season. It's clear he doesn't fit the scheme for the money he's getting paid, so why not give Flowers a chance earlier in the off-season to sign with someone? I'd love for Washington to sign him because, scheme or not, he's a huge upgrade, but many teams may have already spent most of their money.

Nothing so far.....and ProFootballFocus advanced metrics didn't grade Flowers too kindly. If he is smart, he waits until injuries start happening in Training Camps and his agent works for the best one year contract.

His bonuses are the exact reason he was a post june 1st cut. So they don't completely screw up their cap. It's not a bitch move its a business decision that happens every year. The way the system itself is setup isn't particularly kind to the players though.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports the Falcons are not interested in free agent CB Brandon Flowers "at the present time."
Flowers was linked to the Falcons on Monday after he was released by the Chiefs on Friday. The Falcons are going to see what they have in impressive second-year CBs Desmond Trufant and Robert Alford. Free-agent additions Javier Arenas and Josh Wilson are competing with Robert McClain for nickel duties.

Would have helped out our defense a ton but I guess Nolan likes what he's seen in Arenas, Wilson, and McClain. :dunno:

Maybe Flowers wants to stick to the outside and there's no way Trufant or Alford are giving up their spots.

I like the fact that if players don't perform, they risk getting cut. I think the NFL has it right from that perspective.

What the NFL needs to fix is that they can't have an advantage by cutting a player after a certain date. The same penalties should come into play regardless of the date/time they are cut. There should also be more stringent penalties so far as the cap goes if the team wants to cut someone.

Cornerback Brandon Flowers has agreed to terms with the Chargers, a league source tells CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora. Flowers visited the Chargers last week and drew interest from numerous teams after he was released by the Chiefs earlier this month.

Flowers, originally selected by Kansas City in the second round of the 2008 NFL Draft, made his first Pro Bowl last season but the Chiefs let him go in part because he of his $10.5 million salary-cap hit in 2014. The implication: Despite his talents, he wasn't worth the money.

ProFootballFocus.com's advanced metrics agree; Flowers ranked 87th among all cornerbacks last season, just behind DeAngelo Hall, David Amerson and Robert Alford. But Flowers has shown the ability to be a top-10 cover corner in previous seasons.


Still, Flowers, 28, provides the Chargers with much-needed depth. The team reportedly signed him to a one-year deal, which is a low-cost move for them while allowing Flowers to prove he is worth another long-term, big-money contract next offseason.

Good for Chargers to pick up a potential impact player this late in FA, and Flowers get a chance to prove himself for another chance at a big contract.
