Braves acquire Dan Uggla

Atlanta has traded for Marlins second baseman Dan Uggla. The Braves will send the Marlins utility player Omar Infante and lefty reliever Mike Dunn.

Pretty cheap price for a 30 home run hitter, but I hate this move for defensive purposes. The plan, according to this article at least, is to shift Prado to left, and let him play some 1B as well.

Prado's too good of a defensive 2B to relegate him to utility status. And Uggla can't play anything else but 2B.

If Uggla has a great year, I'll obviously be pleased, and it's not like we gave up a whole lot, but this still strikes me as a weird move.

Yes, they lose something defensively, but the Braves desperately need offense and Uggla is a slugger. He will strike out when you dont want him to, but he can also get hot and carry you through a series. The guy hits frozen ropes, and is one of those guys that scares me when he comes up vs my team or my fantasy pitcher.

I dont understand what the Marlins are doing, they also signed John Buck to a pretty sizeable contract today. The Marlins were a really bad defensive team last year, but i'm not sure how a utility guy and John Buck help fix that. Uggla is a gaping offensive hole to replace.

This is a steal for Atlanta. Uggla's impact with the bat will more then make up for his shitty defense. They gave up peanuts for him too; swapping Infante for Uggla for the year (both free agents after 2011) and throwing in the bullpen arm who looks good, but his walk rate is terrible.

Agreed on Buck, 3 years 18 million is a lot for a guy who has put up one good season at the plate in his career. I'm not sure how his defense is, but at 30 I'd say there's a damn good chance he regresses.

Whether or not Uggla turns into a one-year Brave, it's a good trade for them value wise. They get one of the best power bats at 2B in the sport who has averaged 30 dingers a year since coming to the bigs. He may not hit for average or OBP much, but he can drive runners in (averaged over 90 RBI a year).

He's a durable guy who has played less than 150 games once (146). Of course, his defense is putrid, and he strikes out a TON but chances are his bat will help them win more games than his glove will cost them.

From a Marlins perspective, I imagine they made this deal because they wanted manageable contracts in return (Infante is controlled through 2011 and the pitcher is controlled for several more years). The Marlins tried to resign Uggla (read offers of 5 years and north of $70 million) but he declined and they were not going to offer him arbitration.

What happens as far as after 2011 will be interesting. Will the Braves offer him arbitration where he should make at least $10 million or can they get him to resign for a reasonable price to stick in ATL?

They're saying Prado can play third while Chipper is out and will try his hand in the outfield. For their sake, hopefully his bat doesn't lose it's luster with the position change.

I'm pissed. The Marlins are a shit organization.

Uggla wanted to be a Marlin for his career...however, he told the organization to not even call him unless they gave him 5 years (because at the end of 5, he'd be 35, and would qualify for MLB's full benefits package upon retiring)...fuggin organization came out and offered four and went public with it, making Dan, a huge fan favorite, to look like a douchebag, when he was willing to move positions for the team if they needed him to (3B). F- to the Marlins. Fuck you and your movie taste David Sampson.
