The first bolded portion, labeled (1), is where we shall begin. OBVIOUSLY (or so I atleast thought), writing is more constructive than playing video games all day. He was taking a shot at the community, and was actually helping you out here.

Now to the second bolded portion, labeled (2) just for you sir. Once again I thought this was to be obvious, that "trying to be a contributor to literary intellectuality" would not be something I would use to describe a lowlife. Quite the opposite, in fact.
