Brian Wilson back to Dodgers

Brian Wilson appears close to signing soon, and maybe a club that strikes out in the trade market will find satisfaction in the rare July free-agent market.

Maybe that club will be the Pittsburgh Pirates or San Francisco Giants.

Both were described by sources Monday as serious suitors for Wilson. The Pirates, having recently lost closer Jason Grilli, have a clear need. The Giants, now last in the NL West, have little more than a fond history with the bearded closer.

Several clubs watched Wilson work out at UCLA last week, and the Diamondbacks and Dodgers have shown interest as well. One scout who has watched the three-time All-Star closer recently said Wilson is “getting close.” One person close to Wilson said the pitcher “feels major-league ready.”

Wilson, 31, underwent Tommy John ligament transfer surgery in April, 2012. He last threw a major-league pitch on April 12, 2012.

He threw for some scouts late in spring training, but after the underwhelming performance, it was clear that he wasn't close to being ready to help a club. So he regrouped, went back to rehabilitation and determined that he would not audition again until he was confident that he was ready to go.

The Dodgers and the Diamondbacks also are thought to be interested.

Wilson wants to land with a contender and is described as having an affinity for Los Angeles. Being that the Angels now are in sell mode, having dealt Scott Downs to the Braves on Monday, that leaves the Dodgers.

They watched Wilson during his recent throwing session at UCLA and are looking for bullpen help. The Phillies also watched Wilson and were thought to be interested before falling into their current six-game losing streak that likely will push them into the seller market.

Marmol is only on the roster because Dominguez is on the DL. Dodgers had the choice of Ted Lilly versus Marmol and decided to DFA Lilly.

That's not to say that the Dodgers aren't interested in adding a righty RP, beacuse they are.

Not to me. I enjoy the fact that they're making headlines. At least it's now another team doing it outside of the usual ones. Maybe in a couple more years it may get old, but not right now.

I was at the Nats/Dodgers game a week ago and some Nats fan was staring bullets at me like he wanted to fight me for being a Dodger fan. Who is considered insufferable on the Dodgers? Certainly not Wilson. I think most of there players are generally likable. Kemp has been running his mouth as of late while failing to back it up with his bat, and Ethier is an overpaid shitbum, but other then that?

Maybe I see more Dodgers hate than you guys. Tons of idiot fans think that Puig and Ramirez #DisrespectTheGame with their flamboyant bat flips, plus I've seen a ton of fans who think Greinke is an asshole. Anyways, if you're a fan of the Giants and you see your primary rival get one of the biggest personalities your team has ever had while they run away with the division, that shit has to become damn near impossible to watch. One of the Giants SB Nation writers wrote that it's like "your mom making out with [Tommy] Chong in the back of the court while you're getting arraigned for larceny. It's awful, unspeakably awful, and then you have to look in the back and see that?"

Anyways, for what it's worth, I really like the team that the Dodgers have right now (personality and quality-human-being wise). There used to always be a handful of guys who we had that I never really thought too highly of (Milton Bradley, JD Drew, Jeff Kent, Russell Martin, Manny Ramirez, to name a few off the top of my head), but now the only person I'd gripe about might be Andre Ethier but this down year has seemed to humble him a bit so he doesn't seem quite so crybaby/emo. Ethier also does a ton of charity work so he deserves all the credit in the world for that, even if he likes to throw fits about baseball.

For what it's worth, Dodger Stadium has a police presence that I would say is comparable to what I saw at the Capitol when I visited Washington DC two weeks ago. Cops everywhere, the only difference is that there isn't a TSA-esque security check to get in. Gang banger (and the much worse gang banger wannabe) fans remain, but at least I can say that they are being watched much more closely than was the case in the past.

I don't consider Dodger Stadium to be unsafe. I definitely used to think it was dangerous before the Stow idiocy (at least when the Giants came to town) went down.
