Browns Sign Delhomme

CLEVELAND -- Jake Delhomme has a new NFL home, and the Cleveland Browns have another new quarterback.

Delhomme, released last week by the Carolina Panthers, has agreed to terms on a two-year deal with the Browns, whose quarterback position has been nothing short of a merry-go-round of players since the club returned as an expansion team 11 years ago.

ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter first reported the deal, and a source told Schefter that Delhomme is scheduled to make $7 million this season, including just under $900,000 in base salary. With $12.7 million from Carolina, Delhomme will make $19.7 million in 2010.

Delhomme's agent, Rick Smith, said the 35-year-old QB would sign his contract before the club's off-season conditioning program begins. Smith refused to comment beyond saying Delhomme would be resuming his career in Cleveland.

A team spokesman said the Browns have no announcements planned.

Cleveland has been busy trying to resolve a troublesome position. Earlier this week, the Browns acquired backup Seneca Wallace and released Derek Anderson, a one-time Pro Bowl selection who has struggled in the past two seasons.

Delhomme is expected to compete for Cleveland's starting job with Brady Quinn, who has yet to receive any endorsement from the club's new front office.

Delhomme visited the Browns on Thursday but left without a deal. He had scheduled a meeting with the New Orleans Saints, his hometown team, but canceled that trip after working out the principles of a deal with the Browns.

Since 1999, the Browns have had eight different opening-week quarterbacks.

Delhomme is coming off his worst season as a pro. He threw 18 interceptions and the Panthers decided to cut him despite still owing him more than $12 million. Delhomme went 58-40 as a starter with Carolina, leading the franchise to its lone Super Bowl appearance to end the 2003 season.

So they trade for Seneca Wallace, a backup, and they sign Delhomme, another backup. Unless they want Wallace to start, they really need a future signal caller.

I hope Delhomme shines again, this past season was so bad for him. Jake used to play with that fire, whenever a TD happened he was always celebrating with the team, dude has a love for the game. Hopefully he works out for the Browns.

He has worse receiving talent then he did in Carolina, he is just going to play like he has been and getting boo'd of out Cleveland on his road to retirement.

why is this a bad thing for the browns? they get a solid vet QB. so he had a bad year last year...that doesnt mean he cant play anymore. I think this sets up the trade of brady quinn for a draft choice...then they try and draft bradford to play under jake for a few years

speaking of wallace....he is nothing more than a scrub who knows the system that holmgren is going to force the offense to run.

the fact that holmgren is going to force things on the coaching staff will be one of the browns downfalls this year. He didnt want to be a dick and fire magini after 1 year so he takes this front office role....but he is still playing a role in coaching and undermining mangini

He's also getting about 13 million from the Panthers. This is actually working out good for Delhomme. He was probably one of the worst starting Qb's in the NFL last year and he got a raise. Delhomme is the man lol

why is this a bad thing for the browns?

It's a bad thing because he's not very good anymore, throws a lot of picks, and just joined a division with the 3rd, 4th, and 5th ranked defenses in the league last year.

He's better than Quinn/Wallace - but that isn't exactly saying much. His presence will probably benefit Quinn (if he stays) or a drafted QB, but him turning it around without Steve Smith, DeAngelo Williams, and Jonathan Stewart, is unlikely.

Overpayment, but if he can rebound and be a good game manager like was his MO in Carolina then it won't turn out to be terrible.

On the other hand, he might continue to completely suck and this will be one of the worst moves in a while, one that Holmgren will be vilified for, and one that will plunge the Browns further into the depths of hopelessness.

I love how one season defines someone's career. Good signing for the Browns.

Delhomme hasn't had a good year since 2004. He's either injured or throwing away playoff games. His career TD to interception ratio is BARELY over 1. I love the Panthers, lived in South Carolina for a while and used to travel up north to watch games, but Delhomme doesn't have it anymore, and never really did.
