When I was a kid, I loved the fact a RB wore a number in the 80's. I think he wore 82. Butts/Bernstein were maulers in those days, and KC had Christian Okoye and Barry Word at around the same time. Lots of big backs in the AFC West.

Back on topic, Alexander was money inside the 5 at his peak. I said this in another thread, but I looked it up once, and he scored a very disproportional amount of short TD's in his peak years.

Bush actually had one of the best 3rd and short conversion rates in the league a few years ago. I'm not making that up. I'm sure the size sample was a factor, but it is what it is.

This is hilarious to me because leading up to the draft when he came out, everyone swore up & down he was the next Barry Sanders. In fact, on MM I was shouted down & called stupid numerous times when I said I wouldn't crown him as such just yet, but was going to take a wait & see approach. By everyone's reaction you would've thought I said that water wasn't wet.

I always thought the comparison to Westbrook was much more applicable. Sure, Reggie isn't half the runner that BWest is but he is still a similar type of back.

At this point, I don't think Reggie Bush will ever be a productive running back. He just doesn't have the instincts, toughness, or patience to run in between the tackles.

He is, however, a playmaker and a threat every time he gets the ball in space. The biggest issue with him has actually been his durability, not ability.

Don't forget that he led the league in TDs last season before he got hurt.

During his glory days he was money period. He got a lot of short TD's.. but he also had most of the yards on the drive.

Alexander may have been soft inside the 20's... but in the red zone, he turned into an animal.

It frustrated a lot of Seahawk fans because they wanted to see that passion on every carry.. not just when he was close to scoring.

Whenever the draft was being discussed that year, consensus was he should go #1 because he's a no-brain future HOFer & comparisons to Barry Sanders (& Marshall Faulk) were rampant. A few of us kept saying let's wait & see before carving his bust and fitting him for a yellow jacket but were treated like that made absolutely no sense and we couldn't possibly have seen him play at USC or we would've arrived at the same conclusion.

The only worse thing we could've done was suggest he shouldn't get picked first. So when the Texans actually passed on him with the top pick, their management was basically labeled retarded by the MM faithful. Even I was a little skeptical of the move. However, I think Houston is okay with how its played out.

I was one of both.

Thought there was nothing particularly special from what I saw of Bush. ((was more impressed with Sproles highlights a year earlier I think))
But I lambasted the Texans for there choice. Thought they could have traded down even by one spot and avoided the bad publicity that came along with passing up Bush.

Yeah I'll admit I thought the Texans were dumb for passing on Reggie or Vince Young, but I also didn't think Reggie would be a top NFL running back either. NFL defenses are way too fast and smart for you to bounce the ball to the outside everytime and hope for a big gain. You might be able to pull that on Washington State but not a real NFL defense.
Well anyways, I'd take Shaun Alexander even now, because of his larger frame. But there is no doubt, Reggie is a great weapon and when in space and make some amazing plays.

The most common comparison for Bush I heard pre-draft was Gale Sayers. Another HOFer who Bush hasn't come close to.
