Buzzman’s Most Anticipated Movies of Q2 (Apr-May-June)
Well what can you honestly say about that first quarter? It maybe has been one of the worst quarters in film. Granted they weren’t downright awful films, but outside a select few there was nothing that demanded your attention. The good news out of all of this? March was kick-ass month and the carry over momentum seems to have come with it because the next three months are so loaded with movies, that I actually had a good list of 30 that I had to cut down to 9 compared to about 17 in the first quarter. Now onto the hopefully greatness the next three months have in store for us.
#9 | Bad Teacher (June 24th)
Let me be perfectly clear before I start into Bad Teacher. Outside of a tiny select of her films, I generally dislike Cameron Diaz. I think she is overrated in looks and isn’t that good of an actress. Put that aside though, and you realize she can funny if the script helps her out a bit. When I saw the trailer and immediately heard her cussing about the first day of school, I knew I wanted to see this. Comedies can funny, but I find that best ones are rated R so they can essentially do whatever they want to get a laugh. Not only does this film get a R rating, the vulgarity of the topic just seems like it could be awesome. Throw in Jason Segal and Justin Timberlake as side characters, and you’re looking at what could be a funny film. Of all on this list, this is the only film I don’t feel confident in being good. I think it could go both ways, but based on the red-band trailer, it just looks like fun to me.
#8 | X-Men: First Class (June 3rd)
The best thing the X-Men franchise needs right now is a critically acclaimed hit. Since the series hit its peak with X-Men 2, it’s gotten worse with each film and right now is kind of considered a joke. First Class presents the exact opportunity the series may have just needed. Since it is a prequel focusing on two of the more interesting characters, Magneto and Professor X, it can get that fresh start feeling. The trailer makes it seem a lot less cheesy and a great situation that makes friends become enemies. It a cliché told in stories since forever, but it never gets old when done in an entertaining way. This film could make or break the future projects involving the franchise, let’s hope it’s as good as we hope it will be.
#7 | Your Highness (April 8th)
Academy Award Winner Natalie Portman, Academy Award Nominee, and Danny McBride? This mix of casting actually benefits a ton. The world is in love with Portman and Franco, and they both take drastic changes from hard dramas into a badass looking comedy. For Danny McBride this is the first opportunity to see how high his star power as a comedian has taken him, he’s a hilarious guy, but for some reason quite a bit of people have no idea who he is. Your Highness with its goofy story, crude humor, and electric cast look like one of the funniest movies of the year. If not for, Hangover 2, it would easily be the most anticipated comedy of the year.
#6 | Hanna (April 8th)
I am sitting in the theater. The movie I see forgets me, but the trailers start to play before it. This film comes on and it shows a girl skinning some sort of animal, then a amn comes behind her and tells her she’s dead. She in reaction attacks him, only to find out it’s her father and he has trained her into the ultimate weapon to kill a woman in the CIA. Chase scenes ensues, this teenage girl kills agents with ease all the while to a blood pumping movie score. Throw in the cast of Eric Bana, Cate Blanchett, and Saoirse Ronan and the director of Atonement; who wouldn’t be there to see that?
#5 | Scream 4 (April 15th)
I don’t think a horror film will ever top my favorite one of all time, Scream. It was such a masterpiece in so many ways people never even thought of. The second one was alright, but never even came close to matching its predecessor, and the third doesn’t even belong with the series. So maybe a 4th one should make me queezy since each film has gotten worse, but this one feels different. I see some signs of the original in the trailers. That hidden humor of the genre, the brutal kills, and the ghost face looks to be back. It’s great that they got the old characters to reoccur to help ease in the new ones, but if Scream 4 is as great as it looks, it should have the balls to kill anyone off, and the trailers seem to point that way. Scream 4 is the most anticipated horror film in a very long time. Usually they are dumb as shit, but this is one “reboot” that was needed to right the wrongs of a franchise that should be far better than it turned out.
#4 | Water for Elephants (April 22)
This is another film that I had not heard of before seeing it in the trailers before a movie I saw. The first thing I thought was it looked interesting. It had Christopher Waltz has the ringmaster of a carnival, Reese Witherspoon in the unique roles she has strived in with past films, and an underrated Robert Pattison looking far more mature then the beginning of his Twilight days. It wasn’t until a few more viewings of the trailer that I really started to anticipate it. The trailer does a great job of previewing the movie without actually spoiling anything. Its mysteries are still left out there to explore. This seems to be the film on this list I can’t give an exact reason on why I want to see it so bad, other than the trailer was something that really intrigued me in a way no other trailer has.
#3 | The Hangover 2 (May 26)
This is one film that really shouldn’t need an explanation at all. The first one was easily the best comedy in years. No other film since has made you literally die laughing every moment of the movie. The teaser trailer and poster make it seem like it’s the same thing as the first one but that is not a bad thing in the slightest. The only thing to say about the film is will it meet the expectations? The first was such a surprise hit because it came out of nowhere. Now with the sequel, a lot of people are looking forward to something great. Lets hope its every bit as good as the original.
#2 | Super 8 (June 10)
First off it’s JJ Abrams film. He may not make the best films, but he is a master at holding back his films and only feeding you tiny bits to build up the hype. Maybe that’s why sometimes his films falter a little bit. He doesn’t shy away from that strategy again with Super 8. For the longest time, all we had to go off was a tiny teaser of something trying to break out of a crashed train. Now with a full length trailer, there are 4 main reasons to be excited. 1 | It has Coach Taylor from Friday Night Lights, one of the best TV performances I’ve ever seen. 2 | It gives off a Goonie vibe in the best way possible. 3 | It has the look and feel of a classic monster/alien flick of the early 80s. 4 | It’s original.
#1 | Source Code (April 1)
This trailer for some damn reason premiered so long ago, its no wonder it sits atop number 1. It has been the longest wait, so naturally it has me drooling at the mouth. The plot looks unique, that mystery it brings to the table looks wicked, and it comes from Duncan Jones, the man who made the very awesome Moon. If you give him a tiny budget and one actor and he comes away with Moon, I just couldn’t imagine the possibilities he could do with a bigger budget. The trailer to Source Code answered just that. If early reviews are correct, it seems like the wait will end up paying off in a big way. Like the man at the top of this post has said, “CANT WAIT!”
Honorable Mentions: Insidious | Bridesmaid | Super | The Conspirator | Green Lantern | Thor
