So, about a week ago, W2B made some pretty asinine comments about small markets teams, and then took a pot shot at Milwaukee in the Reds thread. This happened when warner was feeling all high and mighty about the Reds signing Joey Votto. Here's warner's comments:

This is why I say that these small market owners are just cheap. These m'fers have the money. They choose to pocket it. That's their right, but it annoys me when they let players walk, claim poverty, and fans buy it (looking at you, Milwaukee owners)

I replied:

Your point is extremely misled. The Brewers have been spending their revenue sharing money, although they didn't when Bud owned the team. Since buying the team before the 2005 season, Mark Attanasio has raised the payroll 250%. They've also consistently outspent the Reds for the Reds for the last five years, including this year (by over fifteen million).

Not to mention the Brewers already signed their MVP to a 10+ year deal, as well as much of the supporting cast to long term deals. And Zack Greinke should be joining that group soon. The Brewers had to choose Greinke or Fielder, considering the costs and returns I don't think anyone should fault their decision.

So why no reply Warner? Unlike the Reds, who have been pinching pennies and pocketing the cash for years. The Brewers, the smallest market in baseball, have been spending. And they've been smarter with their money, they signed players like Braun and Weeks to more team friendlier deals then the Reds have done with Votto and Phillips. So why take the pot shot at Milwaukee?

Confused about the call out.

My position still stands. Many (if not all) of these small market owners choose not to spend the money they have, then cry poverty. And the fans buy it. There is one franchise that I am certain has no money, and that's TB. I am highly skeptical of Pittsburgh. Kansas City I am on the fence. The rest, full of shit owners afraid to break even. Which is fine, they have a right to make a profit.

Votto & Braun play different positions. Votto got less than Pujols and more than Fielder. Pretty much exactly what should have happened. Votto also takes a pay cut in 2014 & 2015 (I believe $12M & $13M those two years, down from the $17M he will make next year), and has a good chunk of his money backloaded just in time for the new TV contracts. Awesome, awesome deal, and it will look like a bargain in a few years, like most of these deals do.

Phillips got more than Weeks for two reasons. One, he's a better player according to WAR, which you happen to be a slave to, so i'd love to hear you spin that. Two, he signed after Weeks. In case you haven't noticed, contract values have increased each year and over time for like the last 100 years or so. The next guy will get more than Phillips & Kinsler.

Reds went from "oh, they are going to lose Votto & Phillips, the window is two years max", to "oh, they signed Votto, but now they are fucked, can't sign anybody else, Phillips is gone", to re-signing both and having the rest of the young core already locked up. Now Reds fans are supposed to be upset because they found a way to keep all of their good players? LOL. Sorry, couldn't be happier. Turns out the owners, who I had been critical of, were stockpiling the revenue sharing and waiting to strike when the TV deal came up. And I couldnt be more thrilled. Hopefully the local TV explosion leads to more of these owners loosening the wallets, because I hate when players leave the teams that developed them.
