Cameron Maybin Signs 5 year extension with Padres

Great signing for the Padres, He's still only 24 years old. If he can figure out to hit in PETCO, this will prove to be an outstanding deal.

I get potential is one thing, but how about these teams actually let guys prove their value before they overpay them.

He also stole 40 bags, plays good defense at a premium position and apparently he loves playing in SD and was very receptive to an extension. As for your bigger point, teams ultimately save money in the long run by inking an extension early rather than letting a player hit the open market. Maybin should be able to command more than five million per year from free agency if he continues developing. Small market teams don't have the luxury of waiting on an asset to prove its full value, they have to gamble a bit more in order to keep costs down.

Im not saying it's an overpay, because it's not, but easy with the 4 WAR.

Maybin is kind of the prototype for why some people don't buy into WAR, because he was pretty much an average player last season, in large part thanks to his high SB totals and good SB%, because he isn't a great OBA guy and has no power.

With that said, he's locked up now on the cheap until he's 30, so they've got themselves a great deal if he gets better.

He had a 4.7 WAR according to fangraphs' defensively generous WAR calculator.

BR had him at 2.9.
