Canes acquire Jordan Staal, signed to 10 year deal

It appears that Jordan Staal isn't looking at a long-term contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins at this time.

TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie reports on Twitter that Staal has turned down a 10-year offer from the Penguins, indicating to the club that he doesn't plan on signing an extension now.

"He is not prepared to enter into a contract extension at this time," Staal's agent, Paul Krepelka, told TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun.

Staal scored 25 goals and 25 assists in 62 games with the Penguins in 2011-12. He led the team in playoff scoring, notching six goals and three assists in the Penguins' six-game series loss to the Philadelphia Flyers.

Staal is entering the final year of a four-year deal with an average annual value of $4 million per year. Though just 23 years old, under the current collective bargaining agreement he would be eligible for unrestricted free agency at the end of the 2012-13 season.

Originally selected second overall in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, Staal has scored 120 goals and 128 assists in 431 career games, all with the Penguins.

Winning a 2007 IIHF World Championship gold medal with Team Canada and the 2009 Stanley Cup, Staal already has a resume full of accomplishments at the pro level. He also was a finalist for the 2007 Calder Memorial Trophy and was a finalist for the 2010 Selke Trophy.

I wish he would sign the long term, but I think with him saying no, this basically puts the nail in the coffin for him staying a Penguin much longer. With the cap situation the pens are in and all the big names they need to resign in the next couple of years, his $6M will go a long way to filling other roster spots.

Why not, that is part of the reason they cleared the cap of Staal. You'll see Pittsburgh right in there now looking for that winger for Crosby since Malkin has Neal and Kunitz.

Use that money elsewhere in my mind. Since they just traded for Michalek again, that takes up more cap space as well.

On defence, they need one player as they have Letang, Orpik, Lovejoy, Martin and Engelland all signed. They have some good prospects that will come up as well to fill in that 6th spot, so that is cheap.

As for forwards, the Kunitz - Malkin - Neal line will stay together, Sutter will slot into Staals spot with most likely Kennedy and Cooke on line three, and Crosby and Kunitz will make up the other line with an opening on the wing. Jeffery/Adams/Vitale will make up the 4th line and the goal situation is done. So basically the Penguins only need to fill the spot for a winger on Crosby's line, and they have a boat load of money to do it now. Even if they give Parise a $7-8M contract, they still have an extra $6M to use. So I could see them making a big play for him now.

I read that wrong about Michalek, I've been catching up on things since I missed them last night.

They could use that money for Parise, but how many big contracts can a team have? Malkin and Crosby are top in the league, and add Parise, and that leaves you little flexibility in the future for things. It would be nice, and the Pens would make a huge run now, but I'm not sure what the future would hold for retaining their younger players.

What it would basically set up for is either Letang or Orpik being left out, and in my mind it wil be Orpik as Letang is such a huge part of the team. Next year is the Crosby year and with Staal gone, he is no longer in that mix, so after this season it will be all about getting Crosby signed to a long deal. The year after that it is about Malkin/Letang/Orpik/Sutter. So yeah there is a lot of money to be thrown there. Someone is going to be left out as I said.

The challenge to me is not this season. They could sign Parise to a 7M deal and they are fine. But they need to keep that extra $6M in cap for as long as they can. It will mostly effect guys like Cooke, Dupuis and Kennedy who will either not be signed again or will have small offers. And you also have to think the Pens will try and get rid of Martin's $5M price tag on the blue line some how.

Four brothers and three of them are all in the Hurricans organization. Eric and Jordan play for the Canes, while brother Jared plays in the AHL on the Bruins, though his rights are owned by Carolina.

RALEIGH, N.C. - Jordan Staal is committed to playing with the Carolina Hurricanes for a long time.

The 23-year-old centre has agreed to a US$60-million, 10-year extension that kicks in starting with the 2013-14 season.

Staal was recently acquired by the Hurricanes from Pittsburgh for Brandon Sutter, a first-round pick and a prospect.

The move reunited him with brother Eric Staal, the Hurricanes captain.

Jordan Staal will earn $4.5 million in the final year of his current contract next season.

Its the 10 year deal he turned down, at what I think is a reasonable rate and carries him until he is 33. Overall, this deal has worked out well for both sides.
