Cardinals sign Antonio Cromartie to 1 year deal

With Patrick Peterson and Tyrann Mathieu already making up a solid Cardinals secondary, Arizona appears to have gotten even stronger in the back end of its defense.

That's because the Cardinals have agreed to a one-year deal with former Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie, the team announced Thursday.


Cromartie is coming off a tough season as the No. 1 cornerback with the Jets last season, but he played well in 2012, and apparently, Arizona believes it'll have good use for the 29-year-old who ranks No. 22 on the CBSSports.com free agent list.

There were reports earlier this week that Cromartie wanted to return to New York, but the Jets -- who have failed to land a top-notch cornerback in free agency this season and, at this point, will go into the season with the struggling Dee Milliner as their No. 1 defensive back -- weren't all that interested.

Add that to the Jets refusal or failure to sign a cornerback like Darrelle Revis or Aqib Talib or Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie or Vontae Davis -- all of which probably doesn't make Rex Ryan all that happy -- and you have to wonder if (or assume that) the Jets will land a cornerback in the early round of the draft.

Cromartie has had problems with his hip, though he didn't need offseason surgery, but the move seems like a solid signing for the Cardinals. They went 10-6 last year with a pass defense ranked 14th (and a run defense ranked No. 1), and assuming Cromartie is healthy, a move like this could help put Arizona in position to make the playoffs.

Antonio Cromartie isn't a nickel corner. Never has been. He'll play #2 receivers while Pat Pete shadows #1's. Similar to the Jets when they had Revis.

Cromartie is notorious for having piss poor seasons following very good ones. Last season he was shit while in 2012 he was excellent. A wildcard signing in my opinion.

Mathieu is also their starting FS. He's a versatile player and they take advantage of that versatility. It has nothing to do with who's better and everything to do with utilizing players to the best of their ability. Switch things the way you say and you now have 2 players who are completely out of their comfort zone and doing something they have barely if ever done.

Mathieu will play the slot because he has the ability to change direction and keep up with the quicker slot WR's. Cromartie is made for the outside where he can use his length to attempt to break up deep routes

I dont see how this is as big deal as most are making it out to be. Most teams take the injury report with a grain of salt of anyway because all teams are aware of or participate in injury report fluff.

Bill Cowher said he used to purposly list the incorrect body part of players on in the injury report.

Former Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher, who resigned last January after 15 seasons with the team, acknowledges telling a fib or two to try to protect his players.

"Sometimes when a guy had an ankle (injury), I might list it as a knee, just because I didn't want people knowing where to take shots at my players," Cowher says.

And last season I believe Ravens were fined or some shit for NOT listing Reed on a report even though he practiced all week and and played in the previous game.
