CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Thinking outside the box and taking a managed risk, the Cavaliers are close to scoring what could be a key big-man addition to their roster.
According to a source, the Cavs have the framework of a contract completed with free agent forward Leon Powe. It could become official as early as Tuesday, when Powe is expected to come to Cleveland to meet with team doctors.

Powe is in the middle of recovering from a torn ACL in his left knee and may not be able to return until the All-Star Break. But the Cavs feel like he's worth the wait.

The sides have been talking for weeks and were able to agree on a two-year contract, which will protect both sides. Powe will get a chance to rehab with a deal and the Cavs will be protected if he recovers as they apparently believe he will.

The 6-8 three-year veteran averaged 7.7 points and 4.9 rebounds for the Celtics last season. He proved valuable when Kevin Garnett went down with injury and played an important role until he suffered the injury during the playoffs.

The Celtics could have kept Powe's rights, but they declined to make him a qualifying offer in June because he's had several injuries to the left ACL. They had hoped to be able to re-sign him when he was healthy, but the Cavs were able to put together a more attractive offer.

There's a reason the Celtics let him walk. If you think he's going to just magically bounce back from an ACL tear and be a "great player", you'll have to hope a lot of things go right.

Dude this is a little overboard? Multiple starters at every position? I'm like the Cavs, but let's be realistic here.

PG: Williams/Gibson/West
SG: West/Parker/D. Green
SF: James/Moon
PF: Varejao/Powe/Hickson
C: Shaq/Ilguaskas

The Cavs have multiple starters at TWO positions, NOT 5, and that may even be pushing it. Both Shaq and Big Z are proven starters, and so are Anthony Parker and Delonte and 2 guard. But get real! The only reason Moon started in Toronto was because Kapono couldn't play D, and there was no other choice. The Cavs are actually quite thin at the 4 position, none of those 3 players should be starting. Varejao is a very good ROLE PLAYER. He'd be much better off the bench. Powe would never start without there being an injury for any good team.

Basically, although the Cavs are relatively deep, you can't say that they have 2 or more starter calibur players at every position. That's a little ridiculous. Out of the top 5 teams in the NBA, San Antonio comes the closest to that (Ginobili, McDyess, Gooden off the bench).

I agree Z and Varejao are both bench players im hoping we can pick up a PF at the deadline. But signing Powe can only help.

I think Andy is more known for his hustle and his flopping. He need to bulk up and go harder.
 
I could swear the Cavs goal this off-season was to find a 4 that could stretch the floor some more. Instead they resigned Andy V and signed Leon Powe.

Mission failed.

1. Shaq isnt gonna play more than 70 games. Wasnt Phoenix Suns trainer the best at rehabbing old guys (Shaq, G. Hill, Nash)

2. Lebron will have to score more than ever, thus risking chance of injury and fatigue, early.

3. Plenty of other teams in the East have improved, so there will be no repeat of last season where Cavs were blowing teams out.

4. Bench Vets will be missed, not for their scoring but for their presence. (Wally, Joe Smith, Big Ben)

5. 2 Slow ass Centers.
