Following Anderson Silva’s TKO victory over Chael Sonnen at UFC 148, there were some questions about Silva’s potentially illegal tactics.
Prior to the bout beginning Silva was seen taking the petroleum jelly from his face and eyebrows and wiping it on his chest and shoulders; referee Yves Lavigne saw this and wiped Silva down with a towel before the two combatants began their main event bout.
During the fight, prior to the flurry of punches that finished the match, Silva grabbed Sonnen’s shorts and also landed a knee while Sonnen was on the ground. Although the point of Silva’s knee made contact with Sonnen’s chest, some have argued that part of Silva’s leg made contact with Sonnen’s head, which would have made it an illegal strike to the head of a downed opponent. Silva also grabbed the cage as he threw the knee, which is not allowed.
Sonnen’s training staff believes the knee was illegal and contributed to the loss and because of this they are set to protest the outcome.
"Chael's not the kind of guy who likes to complain after a fight," Scott McQuarry, Sonnen's head trainer, told Bleacher Report after the fight. "I felt I needed to take this action to protect him. At the point of impact, Anderson had his hand locked in the cage and his feet left the ground. We believe his intentions were clear."
"We started the process of filing a complaint with the Nevada Athletic Commission (NSAC). We believe the knee that Anderson Silva threw was illegal with the clear intent to strike the face. And it did in fact connect with the face. Chael bit his tongue and needed eight stitches."
When McQuarry contacted NSAC’s executive director Keith Kizer to begin the process of an appeal he was informed that the chances that the result would be changed to a no contest are slim to none.
So, McQuarry is now changing his point of attack and asking UFC president Dana White to set up a rematch.
“What I'm going to do is change my tactic," McQuarry said. "We're going to ask for a rematch. We deserve a rematch. If the only way Anderson Silva can win is by cheating, we need to keep a closer eye on Silva before and during a fight. And we need a rematch now. Legal knee or illegal knee, there's enough doubt with all the fouls to warrant a rematch."
“We need a rematch. Chael is a great champion and deserves a fair fight."
