Gil Brandt Tips Chiefs' Hand?



There has been much speculation as to what the Chiefs will be doing with the 3rd pick of the draft. Most have projected Kansas City to take Wake Forest linebacker Aaron Curry. Some, myself included, have projected them to take Virginia offensive tackle Eugene Monroe.

A new contender has arisen, however, in LSU defensive end Tyson Jackson.

Though many view Jackson as a significant reach for a top five pick, Gil Brandt didn't seem to think so, telling the listening audience of his Sirius radio program that Jackson is a "top five pick. Put that in the bank."

The comment, in itself, is interesting but not specific to any team -- other than those within the top five, of course.

But considering that Jackson fits best as a defensive end in the 3-4 and that there are only two teams using the 3-4 in the top five (Kansas City and Cleveland), the options for where Brandt believes Jackson is going are limited.

New Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli is facing the tough task of molding a team built around a 4-3 scheme into the 3-4 alignment he helped build in New England. Pioli has a track record of using first round picks on the defensive line, utilizing first rounders to build standout trio of Richard Seymour, Vince Wilfork and Ty Warren. Jackson has been described to me by veteran scouts as a virtual clone of the Patriots' Ty Warren.

Considering the widespread belief that the Browns are focusing on either USC quarterback Mark Sanchez or Texas Tech wide receiver Michael Crabtree with the fifth pick, Brandt would appear to be referring to the Chiefs with his comment -- not that it really matters. The Lions and Rams aren't likely to consider Jackson with the first two picks of the draft and no team is going to offer up the collection of picks necessary to trade into the top two picks to get ahead of the Chiefs to nab Jackson

"Reaches" have never been a big deal to me, because a "reach" is when a team grabs a player before an expert would have (unless you do your own scouting, this is the only information we can compare it with). And we all know how great the experts are...

I know this is just what Gil Brandt said, but if Kansas City really believes Tyson Jackson is "their guy", then pull the trigger. He's not gonna be there in round 3 when you're back on the clock, why not take the guy who you feel is best for your team?

I understand the need to keep your top choices a secret but there is no need to lie about who you are interested in. It seems that is the case with a lot of teams. Just keep your mouth shut or say you are interested in multiple players. This, "we really like Mark Sanchez" to make Curry fall to you crap is pretty gay. I just used that as an example. Not picking on the Hawks or anything.

totally agree with that. Look at the patriots draft last year. Some said it was a reach to draft Mayo in the top ten and some mocks didnt even have him going in the first. But Mayo ended up being the best defensive rookie in the league.

There's no way the Chiefs take Jackson at 3. We're not playing a traditional 2 gap 3-4 defense, so we don't need a traditional 5 tech DE.

They allegedly like Jackson a lot, but they would probably trade down to get him.

Yea all this means is that it improves the Chiefs chances of trading down. He can play 3-4 end and 4-3 end so he would be ideal for the KC defense as they are gonna be using a mix of both the 4-3 and 3-4.


EDIT: Reportedly Dan Snyder and the Redskins are in love with Sanchez and would want to move to try to pursue Sanchez. The most likely trade scenario is the Chiefs trading down to #13 (then maybe selecting Jackson) and get a 2010 first round pick and the Redskins select Sanchez at #3.

They probably love Jackson, but I doubt they take him @ #3. In the end, they'll end up taking the guy they've been projected to take, despite might not fitting in exactly how they'd prefer.

Big difference between a team coming off an 18-1 season and a team thats been bad for 5 years. Also a big difference between the #3 and #10 picks. Its tougher to make a reach when desperately need a productive player. Easier to take chances when you already have a Super Bowl team and you are picking later in the 1st round.

If Gil Brandt says it, it usually doesn't take much more to get me on board. But I can't see this one without a trade down. And I think a trade with Washington puts them too far down, because Jackson is a realistic option for teams like Green Bay and Denver @ 9 and 12 respectively.

Agreed. I don't think the Chiefs will be targeting a specific player while moving down, though. I think they'll just be happy to move out of the 3 spot.

But this time around, it's way different, no Peterson...but Pioli...eh - okay, let's just see how this pans out.

curry IMO is the best player in the draft, i would take him at 1

look at what the lions have done with their drafts, take a safe choice in a player that is guaranteed difference maker

I dont understand that at all ^

Lions already have alot of money tied up at LB (sims and Peterson) if they take Curry thats a huge portion of their cap just on LBS. Plus Curry isint that type of player , alot of people have said hes alot like a Jerod Mayo at OLB (Mike Mayock being one of them) . Hes not an exceptional pass rusher or exceptional in coverage ...would he improve thier lb core ? Sure , is he a BIG difference maker ? I dont think so to be honest. Hes good at lots of things but isint really amazing at one given thing , that may be a good or bad thing depending on how you look at it. Hes the best player in a weak draft in terms of the top players (not depth).

The safe pick is an olinemen , cause even if hes not as good as you wished you can move him to RT where he can do a solid job.
